    The untamed monster was fun to watch from the comfort of my home. You must be hectically trying to tame it. Put it in your storage till it learns to behave. A nice fly day as the fog didn't come in.

      I was pleased that the fog behaved better than the Octopus. Some days that could be really nice are spoiled when the fog rolls in.

    Very nice display Jim...the music really adds to the calmness of the DC's flight...although, that octopus' performance at the end there was pretty wild!..

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  Před měsícem +1

      It was the wildest that I've seen with an Octopus. But that older type is only a good flier in near=perfect wind, unlike my newer Octopuses, which are super-good fliers.

    What an interesting octopus. With all of that movemdent it was FUN to watch; not knowing what it would do next. What wonderful ocean waves. They look like ours here (Ha,Ha) on a nicce Summer day.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  Před měsícem

      They are the same waves, of course, just on the opposite side of the same ocean. They may have originated in the same spot, somewhere in the middle!

      Those Sun Oak kites are very good, Craig. They have been in and out of production several times, and I don't know if they are currently available, but I'm happy to have mine.

      @@JimNicholls I have 3 Sun Oak kites and the all are good flyers. I like that they are made right here in the U.S. Excellent construction, spars are made from Basswood, grown on their farm, which is unusual. I was recently trying to look at their website and had no luck getting on. Apparently they are on hiatus which I've seen before, or given up making kites altogether. I have also sent texts to certain people there with no response. Hopefully, they're just taking a break. It would be a shame to lose another quality kite maker.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  Před měsícem

      @gregr.9643 I agree, Greg. But I have the impression they may have stopped permanently this time. Their kite-making seems to have been as much a hobby as a money-making endeavor, and they never made large numbers of anything. I'm glad I've got mine. I have a French Military from them also, which I don't often fly.

    Very cool Jim. I have never seen an octopus get that wild. LOL. Ron

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  Před měsícem

      It was a very sudden transformation, Ron, but that type of Octopus is never happy unless the wind is perfect. The newer Octopus design from Ma Chinghua is far superior, and I've never had mine misbehave.

      Those tails are great, Dewey, and another example of what a loss the closure of Gomberg Kites was.

  • @kiteflyingdownunder....car6272

    Like the Delta design the Conyne kite is hard to beat for reliable flying and versatility to add tails etc. I wonder if the Octopus was just feeling the cold winter wind.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  Před měsícem

      It's got colder since then, Carl. Frosty mornings again for a while instead of the rain, I think.

  • @SMALLsails
    @SMALLsails Před měsícem +2

    Good looking kites with great tails. Sometimes small octopuses behave that way, I think it was trying to get released?

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  Před měsícem

      It may indeed have wanted to escape, and I've never seen it fly so wildly before. But it's not good at coping with strong or gusty wind, unlike my newer Octopuses which handle almost anything.

    Hey Jim, I have been watching your videos for a while now, they always give me really nice chill vibe... I can't really catch every video tbh... But i love when I do.
    I'm not really familiar to kites, and thought lets give this a go, but I don't understand which one to get, I need something that is decently sized and easy to fly as a beginner, and should be portable, easy and quick to fold up to keep in car's boot, and be carry able attached to backpack if not in it...
    If you read this, please recommend a kite, and thanks for getting me into kite flying hobby!

      There are many kites in India but they are very hard to learn to fly because they are just handmade by sticks and paper...
      I'll get one from Amazon.

      In my opinion, a delta in the 6 to 9 foot range are very easy to fly and relatively cheap to buy.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  Před měsícem +1

      Like the other people who've commented, I think a good delta would probably be the best kite to start with, but I don't know a specific one on Amazon that I could recommend. I haven't bought kites from there. I hope you have a lot of fun with whatever you buy.

    Hi Jim, these Octopus kites seem to be quite delicate reaching their upper end of wind range. I have two of the Emma Octopusses in 10 an 15 m length and both of them tend to be dancing when the wind becomes too strong. Otherwise they are absolutely perfect flyers and uncomplicated in use. On this years Kieflers Meeting on Fano/Denmark I didn't even unpack them because of too strong or too low windspeeds.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  Před měsícem

      Yes, Michael, those kites have very definite wind limits, and once the limit is exceeded they become very badly behaved. In the right breeze, however, they fly happily all day and are great kites as you say. I don't fly the 15m one very often, but it makes a great show and I must get it in the air again soon.

      @@JimNicholls i don't know. those are the least attractive octopus kites as their shape just looks like an afterthought and not really octopus-like. a much better design are the ones designed by Ma Qinghua which i've seen in your other vids.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  Před měsícem +1

      @jaco177 The Ma Qinghua kites are the best available, great fliers and better by far in my opinion than the more expensive ones from Peter Lynn Kites, which are basically line laundry anyway. The older Chinese ones like the one in this video were good for their time and price, but outdated now for sure.

    • @jaco177
      @jaco177 Před měsícem

      @@JimNicholls thanks for the reply and love your vids. i've got one of Ma's on order and not needing a lifter is a huge bonus but it's kinda surprising that they're not offered in more color combos. i've got a couple of 12 meter line laundry types that i'll be flying for the first time this weekend. they are the best looking IMO and have so much more color variety.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  Před měsícem +1

      @@jaco177 The colour range of the Ma kites is certainly limited. However, Kaixuan Kites (official makers) offer them in custom colours, albeit at an increased price, which I guess is to be expected, and still better value than the PLK products.

    What happened with the octopus? Was the wind just too strong/weak/gusty? I really like those big conye kites.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  Před měsícem

      Not sure, but I think that kite, unlike my newer and better Octopuses, can't cope with higher winds, and the breeze had certainly increased at that time.
