      Thank you for the Video. HDR is not that great if you don't take care the white pixels on screenshots to get at SDR level. The lights on the background on A-Roll look great, but when you present screens the graphics are too high on nits. Watch on a MacBook Pro with XDR and it will blind you. Have to adjust the brightness to go through it. Just some well intended feedback for your consideration :)

    @2:30 - For my fellow Mac Users, an alternative to an external PCI enclosure is just get an UltraStudio 4K instead of a Decklink.
    It's a thunderbolt device that does the same thing (plus capture and a few extra features).
    For those who don't need 4K - the UltraStudio MONITOR 3G (NOT capture) will give you a clean HD output via HDMI or SDI and it's super cheap.

    Hmm, this was very interesting for me. I've done casual editing on DaVinci Resolve before on a traditional monitor. Last year I changed my single PC setup from 3 monitors to 1 single 42" LG OLED. I can capture HDR footage without issue, have tried uploading it etc and watching on other devices to check the colours etc, all good. What I didn't realise this would affect is my ability to edit within DR, I naively assumed it would all be smooth sailing! Today I uploaded the same HDR footage into DR and was surprised to see it washed out etc. I tried all sorts before resorting to the internet. I had no idea the workflow process was so complicated (amateur user) for using an OLED - it also appears that it's almost impossible where the OLED is your only monitor, i.e. the one you are going to record on, edit on and post process on.
    My own fault, should have looked into it more last year. However now I'm stuck in an awkward spot, as I love the LG "monitor", picture quality when gaming etc is stunning. But it would appear I need to change something for the workflow of editing to work at all, shame.

    @barrywallisable Před rokem +3

    Awesome video Sidney. I just wanted to point out a few omissions in your video.
    1. I guess you are a PC guy but I didn’t notice any mention that Calman software only runs on Windows x86 and most Mac users are now running on Apple Silicon ARM chips. So will either have to borrow a PC laptop or figure out how to run Parallels emulation on their Macs.
    2. Most professional, especially the ones running Macs won’t opt for a Decklink card but will go for the Blackmagic UltraStudio series like the 4k Mini or Pro. As it is much more flexible and cross platform compatible. And there are a few other benefits to using these for monitoring. For a more rounded video these should have been mentioned.
    Great Job.
    Barry UK

    • @sidneybakergreen
      @sidneybakergreen  Před rokem +5

      Hello Barry, I am 100% a PC guy. The discontinuation of boot camp due to the move to ARM chips was unfortunate; however, I do not tend to cater to Mac OS with my audience when it comes to grading. I have slightly explained these sentiments in my review of my M1 MacBook Air and have somewhat expanded on them to include the M2 chips as well. Perhaps the M3 chips or the new Mac Pro would change my mind, but the potential price point of that machine leaves me on the fence.
      Regarding DeckLink cards, all Blackmagic Design I/O products work with most standard NLEs, including DeckLink cards, regardless of the user's operating system. That being said, I believe it's important to differentiate the audience that will be researching things on CZcams versus a dedicated post house. I believe that if you're searching for how to use a TV as a mastering display for color instead of a dedicated industry-preferred mastering display designed to CIE and SMPTE standards, price is probably the biggest factor. Therefore, I am hesitant to recommend a $1,000+ monitoring device when, for most people, a DeckLink solution with an external PCIe solution will be fine and also cheaper. Dedicated post houses tend to use those devices for more than just a clean feed output as well.
      With that, I believe this is simply a glimpse into the struggles of being an educator, especially on a platform dedicated to somewhat shorter-form content. It's impossible to cater to everyone, and we tend to rely on what we feel will be best for the audience we have designed the video for. Furthermore, it's impossible to speak to everyone, so I am thankful that we have a comments section where things like this can be discussed.

    I think there is a missed opportunity here to discuss how to actually calibrate. No mention of meter profiling or metamerism. Remember that D65 on an OLED will not perceptually look like D65 so you'll need a custom white point when calibrating. Also the color meter is simply estimating tristimulus values from a measurement of reflectance and converting those into chromaticity co-ordinates, as opposed to measuring the absolute power distribution of the light source. This is why some sort of spectro device is necessary to profile your meter when properly calibrating a display for professional use.

    • @sidneybakergreen
      @sidneybakergreen  Před rokem +13

      Hey Sam. I appricate your comment, but want to adjust your thinking just a little on the purpose of this video.
      First thought, the D65 white point is actually a custom coordinate on the calibration software as compared to the exact D65 chromaticity x,y value.
      Second, we have to keep the audience in mind when looking at CZcams content. Color calibration of displays is a rabbit hole in and of itself.
      You also have different groups of people within our industry with different mindsets with respect to color calibration. You have some artist who will calibrate Rec 709 for about 1-2hours, and others like me that will calibrate for 28 hours.
      The point is, this isn't a video dedicated to color calibration: it's a video about using the C1 OLED. If there are people who are more color perfectionist, like yourself, I expect that they will use their knowledge to add to the process that I have given.
      Furthermore, if we are getting that deep into color calibration philosophy, we probably wouldn't be using a C1 as a mastering display, when it can't even hit 1000 nits for HDR.
      What I will not do is overload our lowest common dominator with information that is only going to make a tiny perceivable difference. That's the balancing act one must have as an educator, especially when we don't know where everyone is at in their career.

    I'm curious if you have any tips for getting into HDR? I have my LG C1 Oled which while not perfect can be used for HDR grading in some scenarios. Curious if you have any tips for getting started in that world, it does seem a bit different from SDR.
    I know you need to be in DCI-P3 or Rec2020 and in some nit level of the STR gamma. I don't currently have an IO device, I will be getting one for my new main monitor upgrade in the near future. My OLED is just used a client display, so it's connected directly to my Mac via thunderbolt 3 to HDMI.
    How it would be best to watch HDR content that I grade? Upload to CZcams and then watch it there since they now support HDR video? Also on Mac there are is an option to allow HDR for displays that support it. When I turn this on the LG turns on HDR mode, so I assume this should stay on when working in HDR, and off when in SDR.

Second, you mention in a comment below that the Calman software offers a pattern generator. But that is a $1500 option, which is more than the TV, Calman Home, and the X-rite combined. No, you need a colorimeter. But there are cheaper options, such as the i1display, and the Datacolor Spyder 5. But they are only accurate to near 1000 nits, which for the C1 & C2 is of course adequate.

    LG's are a bit tricky to calibrate. The internal LUT won't cut it if you want RGB Full Range. Video range is fine with the internal LUT, otherwise you'll need to load it in an external LUT box.

      @@ACreations891 LG's internal LUT is designed to work for YCbCr Video/Legal Range (16-235). When you wanna calibrate but you have RGB Full Range signal, the internal pipeline tries to make the LUT to fit in the full scale (0-255), and that's resulting on quantisation errors. It's not bit perfect. Therefore if you're watching movies, or you are not feeding the TV RGB Full Range signal it's fine. In case you're feeding the TV RGB Full Range signal, and you have a LUT loaded, then the output is not bit perfect anymore.

      @@nimrod7785 When you say internal LUT, do you mean the stock standard LUTs? If you use Calman to upload your own LUT does that work around the issue you're talking about? I don't plan to do that though, I plan to use HCFR to create a LUT then I use Resolve to apply the LUT before it gets to the TV. (Meaning it'd only work when I'm in Resolve via Decklink, but I'm ok with that)

    • @nimrod7785

      @@ACreations891 There is no standard LUT uploaded, it's unity or null by default. I am talking about the LUTs you upload and the software doesn't matter. The TV's pipeline has the issue. Whatever LUT you upload it with CalMan or ColorSpace or whatever will have the same problem.
      Resolve and feeding the LUT with software is a whole different world of issues.
      The recommended approach is get a Blackmagic Bi-Directional Converter 12G and upload the LUT there. Problem Solved.

      Yeah, you need an external pattern generator. The Raspberry Pi with PGenerator software will only allow for SDR calibration. If I remember correctly, you need a HDfury box, to "translate" The signal to HDR, but it's been a while, since I read about it.
      But you can find the info on the AVS forum, in the "Display Calibration" thread.
      And of course, you need the Calman Home software.
