    Man!
    Thank you for this video. I have been reading about LGC242 since last year. Lots of typical CZcamsr reviews - that is video game features, "productuvity monitor". I'm going to totally use it in Resolve during color grading. There wasn't any candid YT video that talked about Apple Displays or Apple XDR. I even considered Apple Displays for a while, but I would have to buy two pieces .. And once I was not satisfied with the assembly and color grading on two monitors.
    thank you again!
    I'm ordering this TV today!
    Will you share your exact settings?

    Maybe you could make a setup guide video showing everything you need to turn off and like how you gotta put it into 'pc mode' for low latency etc. I think I've done all that on my own but I don't know what colour profile to use and also like theres some sliders like which aren't at 50% or at 0 so I can't tell where is the neutral position.

  • @BalloonCandyFun
    @BalloonCandyFun Před rokem +12

    There is some seriously misleading information in this video I just want people to be aware of. This display can be in no way used to grade HDR deliverables. It cannot display reference Dolby Vision. You need minimum of 1000 nits peak sustained to be able to accuratley grade DV HDR. This display tops out at around 700-750 nits. Which is far off the mark in the way of accuratley working with HDR material. The "Dolby Vision" you'll see when viewing content on this display is at best the 600nit trim pass a colorist will do when prepparing deliverables. These displays are good however for client displays and the like in an SDR setting when properly calibrated and using a deciated video clean feed output. They calibrate well, with an around 9000 point calibration being able to yield results of a delta e of .9 which could be considered "reference". Anything lower than 2 is considered good, while anything below 1 could be considered "reference". Another great thing is their ability to internally store a 3D calibration LUT, which takes away the need of using external LUT boxes.

    • @HugoWill
      @HugoWill  Před rokem +7

      I'm not the first one to use an OLED TV as reference monitor. You can look it up yourself, but many huge color grading bay and colorist use OLED simply because it's not aways about brightness, contrast ratio is way more important in my experience, and seeing true blacks is just way more important than seeing over 1000 nits. there some TVs and monitors that can do way more than 1000 nits but their black are just milky and you can't really judge the darkness just by looking at the screen without scopes. and by the way, this OLED TV officially states that it supports Dolby Vision and quiet honestly it feels to be true, unlike apple XDR display that is way brighter, but doesn't really support it. You probably should try it yourself, before blaming someone in misleading info based on simply theory. I'm giving an actual practical experience feedback.

    • @BalloonCandyFun
      @BalloonCandyFun Před rokem +5

      @@HugoWill So having a firm grasp on theory is pretty essential in coloring, I think any colorist worth their salt will tell you the same thing. Also, this TV cannot be used for Dolby Vision mastering. You can even look on their site yourself. I'm a Dolby Vision Certified Professional and had to take their course on this stuff, so I'd say I'm a relativley authoratative source on the matter. This TV cannot accuratley produce the SMPTE ST 2084 transfer function, which is required to create content for Dolby Vision. You are correct about OLEDs, the contrast ratio is what makes them appealing, which is why you will see them in coloring suites as client monitors or some colorists will use them for SDR work. There are even a handful of OLEDs that are actually used for professional Dolby Vision master, like the Sony BVMHK310, but even those are being phased out for Dual Layer LCDs. However, saying that you can master Dolby Vision is strictly untrue. Per Dolby's own specifications, a mastering display for Dolby Vision must be able to produce 1000 nits peak sustained brightness and be able to display the P3 D65 or BT2020 color spaces. If I walked into suite for an HDR mastering for one of my clients and asked the post house to use an LG C2 because I felt that it reproduced Dolby Vision accuratley, I'd get laughed out of the room. Somethings are just objectivley true, and objectivley false.

    • @HugoWill
      @HugoWill  Před rokem

      @@BalloonCandyFun so an LCD with above 1000 Nits would be a better choice for Dolby vision over this OLED ?

    • @BalloonCandyFun
      @BalloonCandyFun Před rokem +2

      @@HugoWill Yes! Even Asus has some displays in their ProArt line out that can actually be used for just that purpose! Now it's not as simple as that, you have to consider the amount of dimming zones to avoid ghosting as these are Mini LED displays (like the Pro Display XDR), and make sure it can reproduce the P3 D65 or Rec2020 color spaces, but they don't break the bank like having to drop $30k on something like the Sony BVM. Sorry if I came off as aggressive or negative in any way. There's just a lot of misinformation out there about HDR and it can really confuse people's idea of what actual HDR is. This stuff is complicated and it confused the heck out of me for awhile until I had to learn it all for some projects. If you or anyone is interested in learning more I highly suggest checking out Dolby's info on this stuff.

      @HugoWill  Před rokem

      @@BalloonCandyFun so you say, all you need for HDR is brightness?
      I’m sorry, but I have Sony BVM Serries monitor. And the whole reason why I was so impressed with this OLED is because the image was almost identical.
      I had bright LCD with brightness over 1000 nits, but even they look miserable to Sony BVM, and this LG oled is the only one who came incredibly close.

      Very few projects need that. If you're a pro color grader doing work for big streamers like Netflix, Hulu etc then yes you need a better reference monitor. But if you're a color grader or a filmmaker working on 1080p HD res output workflow then you'll be fine. HDR is still not the standard and most distributors want 1080p Rec 709 deliverables.

    It was not terribly useful. Is it connected directly to your computer? How is it configured in the operating system? Do you have to use a Blackmagic box between computer and OLED? How is Resolve configured? What is your video footage that you edit? With what is the OLED display calibrated? If you are using it for HDR editing, you should know all this, so tell us!

    How are you hyping this so much and how do you work on this professionally when you dont even use a box in between and take direct hdmi output. No lut adjustment in TV, this model is going nuts with the brightness adjustment that can not be fully switched off even in the service menu... I dont get it.

      Did you even watch the video or do you not have enough brain cells to understand his point? He has a 10k Sony reference monitor which he compares it to with the result being highly accurate.

    42" it's to small for movies and entertainment!! For that money i choose all day LG C1 55"!!!
    I hope you get WBE panel!!! Otherwise you pay for EVO and don't get it!!!

      that isn't the purpose of a 42" in his review..... It is for desktop use and close up. It is a niche market, the next OLED panel monitor at 32 inch is by LG for$3,844. He got a 10 grand Sony reference monitor for color grading, this man knows what he is doing for his profession.

      @@greenclydefrog I'm actually using a 55 inch C2 close up, i think it's a great size TBH

      @ So cool. Is the pixel density still great on the 55?

    •  Před rokem +1

      @@alfredknodler540 yeah, the software I use, like Blender and Resolve, has tiny interface elements, so I like seeing them nice and big. If I want to play a game or whatever I roll the chair back a few feet 🤣

    •  Před rokem +1

      @@alfredknodler540 Also I think age is a factor, it's hard to describe but my low light vision and my ability to see smaller text has worsened in the last decade, which is quite common i think. some people would find it too big.
