Here's the final version of the music video I made for Scoundrel Days, one of the greatest songs of A-ha, and my favorite song of all time. A-ha never released an official video, so I decided to make this one. I only used clips from their videos released on the 80s and early 90s, and I tried to keep it dynamic but also relevant to the lyrics, with an specific aesthetic that, hopefully, matched the mood of this masterpiece of a song.
It's also a gift I wanted to make to all the fans out there that were waiting for a video of this kind, and a gift to the band itself for composing this song and for being an important part of my life.
I worked and color corrected every clip, so it doesn't look that old and also to keep that specific aesthetic I was talking about. I hope the result was worth the effort.
I called this one the ultimate fan music video for Scoundrel Days, since it's the best I can do. And also, since I haven't seen any other video of this song with so much love and effort put into it, I think the name fits.

As if I am not crying enough everytime I listen to Morten's angelic voice, here comes this video matching perfectly all peaks and turns of this dramatic song creation to his facial expressions and mouth moves from other Aha's productions to complete my emotional climax! For all the above, a deep and sincere Thank You!
You’re welcome 👍. I’m very glad to have made a video that many fans were expecting. I myself was expecting one, but it never came, so I decided to make one by myself. After all, it’s my favorite song of all time, it didn’t feel right not being able to watch a video made for it, let alone a good one.
Hope I made this masterpiece of a song a little justice, it took me more than three months to create it and tried my best to make it emotional for the fans, and I believe the result was worth it. My sincere gift to all A-ha fans that were expecting a video of this kind. Scoundrel Days, above all A-ha songs, deserved one.

I got the general idea, made the structure of the video, and even drew a few storyboards before I even started the editing part. This songs deserves the effort, as you said, it’s a true masterpiece. I have this album on cassette. I was 14 when it was released. I vividly remember playing it on my Walkman while doing my "paper round".
If I'm honest, I didn't really "get" (as in understand) the album until I was a couple of years older with - (What I believed was) a broken heart.
I'm 49 now and this album gets played regularly.

Thanks for your comment. And it would be great that this video could somehow reach the band. It took quite an effort, and I think they would appreciate it (I still don’t understand why this song wasn’t a single and never got an official video).
As per your favorite songs of the album, they are exactly the same as mine. But there are times when I prefer Manhattan Skyline over Soft Rains of April, depends on the mood. The rest are always there on my top, being Scoundrel Days my favorite one (my favorite song of all time, in fact).

Thanks, I’m glad you liked it. But I can’t take too much credit, the song alone makes anything epic. I just added some more muscle to an already beating heart.
But being this song my favorite song, I really put a lot of effort into this video, and I think this is the best I can achieve with what I know now. But I’ll keep learning, hoping to make better videos in the future.

I am struggling to understand why Scoundrel Days was never released as a single. Due to the lyrics, which are clearly a narrative, it was screaming out for a state of the art music video to be made for it. Maybe the three singles released from the album helped sell enough copies, who knows. That said, You've done a great job here creating a very clever video for many a-ha fans to enjoy. Keep up the great work.
Andrew Hurley I agree, this song is a masterpiece and I never understood why they didn’t release a video themselves. Maybe because other songs from this album could be considered more popular (like i’ve been losing you, Manhattan Skyline, etc). That’s why I decided to make this video by myself, even if it took me months (which it did). After all, it’s my favorite song and I never found a good video, and wanted to see one while listening to it. I made it for myself, but decided to share it with other A-ha fans arround the globe. It was released as a single, I remember the first time I heard it on the radio and I have the cassette tape and disc.
It was never released as a single in UK or rest of world.
The Swing of things was another great track that was underrated.

Yeah, and in my opinion, the best song from the band, and my personal favorite (of all songs of all time). I had to make this video, I didn’t like the idea of listening to this masterpiece and never been able to see a video that goes along well with it (and a video with heart).

It should have been the first videoclip single from the 2nd album.
It is the antithesys of take on me.
Both begin in B minor with a fast synth riff which play nearly the same notes.
But scoundrel days is dark and scary where take on me was naïve and joyful.
Same instrumentation, opposite feelings.
Perfect theme to open the suite...
But no, they did not make it.
Was this those warner company men dumb choices ??(they made a song about them in Major earth)
I agree, Scoundrel Days and Take on Me are perfect opening tracks, with very different vibes despite their musical similarities. Take on Me became a hit mostly because of its video, so I still don’t get why they didn’t make an equally good video for Scoundrel Days. They could even have used the same rotoscope technique, but to tell a darker story. If they had made it and became a hit, A-ha would now have perhaps the greatest opening track videos of all time under its belt. I really don’t get it.
Anyway, that was the main reason I had to almost burn my eyes looking at the screen for three months while making this video. It’s my favorite song and not just from A-ha, it wasn’t acceptable for me to not see a good video for it one day. And since I decided to make it, I did it the best I could. There’s not a single shot that wasn’t modified (color balance, effects, 3D animation for a couple of shots, etc), and now I think it was worth the effort.
This song deserved a lot better than the recognition it got. I hope this video reaches people that haven’t listened to it, it’s a real masterpiece and, at least to me, one of the greatest opening tracks of all time.
