First time I saw it i was hooked, I love all the characters Rocco and Greenlee cracked me up and Dafoe is great as Smecker. This movie is a classic,definitely not for everyone but Ive seen it 100 times and it never gets old.
Absolutely a great film and this is coming from a guy who spent 22 years working in Hollywood but one of the issues was the Director himself. He turned into kind of an egotistical ass ruining his career but that happens in any business. Great review. Thanks so much for posting this.

I thought this was a cool film when I first saw it but seeing it years later it does not hold up. Rocco is just embarrassing. Willem DeFoe needed to be reeled in. Not a master stroke, Duffy dropped the ball.
I can't really argue against your points as there's a part of me that agrees especially about Rocco. But I do think if Willem is more subtle it wouldn't be as memorable and make it less interesting.
