“Wow Sam! When you said “Most people are too boring,” that was the truth. You tell them dude!”
Tea comes from T, which is slang for truth. Used in “spill the tea,” like “tell the truth” ... sometimes used for “shade” which is saying something shady, aka critical but true comments. “Go off sis” is just kind of hyping someone up, similar to saying “keep doing your thing,” used sarcastically a lot as well.. like in an argument if someone has a disagreement, they can say “ok sure but go off.” “Sis” is just short for sister, used in place of “friend” kind of, used toward both sexes.

15:00 in Korea, on music shows, they are told to hold for seven seconds (for editing purposes). Korean tv films music performances very differently in a lot of ways, and this is one of the things that really stands out when it's carried over onto American tv.
That's just good performing in general. Don't break character.

The whole idea of having a stage persona vs your actual personality is the big theme of their last few albums, good job pointing that out just by their voices!
The way you imitated J-hope's part (the rapper who started the second verse) was really spot on in terms of style … like yeah, it really helps to understand what you're talking about when you're doing what he's doing and it's working
An important thing to note about this performance:
That dance is more gruelling than it looks. Pretty much all of the movements are in the boys' shoulders and chest, which will make singing really difficult as there's less air control. For them to be able to do these kinds of movements and still have their voices be so controlled is amazing and shows just how much skill they have and how much training they have done.

We appreciate you not being another person wanting to use BTS's name for clout and instead being insightful and just acting as you would usually, even if you didn't know what they were saying.
YES YES YES to your talk about languages. i'm a languages student and im only studying english and french, but when i listen to my friends speaking the languages they're studying (and that i dont understand) im just amazed and fascinated by the sounds, i don't even need to know what they're saying to appreciate them. and music just adds another level to that amazement. i love listening to SoHyang singing the Moana songs and i DEFINITELY do not know what she's saying, but her expressiveness and emotion come through and that's literally all i need. that's such a beautiful and important part in music, imo 👌
With what you mentioned with the moana song I would like to hear your opinion about the Danish singer in the role of Elsa in frozen's into the unknown because I feel like her voice and powerfulness fits Elsa better than the original (only if you feel like doing it and have the time :)) where as for Moana I LOVE the french voices in the songs

Martina Boccaleoni me too. I’m learning French too (English speaker) but I love listening to other languages and how people pronounce words and how their accents really plays on my ear and trying to see if I can make out words (if I’m hearing correctly) I love listening to Stromae sing Quand C’est to catch the words I know and make out more words. When I listen to BTS I’m definitely learning the Korean words because I love it and want to fully sing/rap along.

Love your content. Just wanted to mention that Korean is alphabet based (there are vowels and consonants) and not character based. I’m not a singer but your analysis is always so interesting and educational.

That was a phenomenal review. My 11-year-old daughter is a huge BTS fan and in choir and band, so I am really looking forward to watching this with her and tying together my "thing" (watching Sam Johnson videos) and her "thing" (watching BTS videos).

Thank you so much for supporting her. I've been a fan of BTS since I was 13 (7 years ago) and my parents never showed any interest in it (they were abusive, granted) and I cannot tell you just how much validating your kid's interest will help her in the long run. You're doing amazing, keep it up 💜
deadsoon thank you. I was not a fan at first... I keep explaining to her it’s not the music or the performance I dislike, it’s the insane rabid obsessive fan base. But we listen to them together sometimes... she still seems to try to prove to me that they’re good musicians, but I just keep telling her - they’re super talented! I enjoy them!

The breathy-to-clean sound was Jin, he does that a lot. He adds a lot of breathiness in his voice on purpose, and even like sighs (?) into the mic. There's one video where you see him recording Tonight and he sings the same bit in falsetto and then in head voice, you can really see the difference in texture. I'd love to see a reaction to that and Jungkook's Euphoria rerecording, since that's just them at the mic, and chatting things with the PD.

Broooo i think this is the 1st a vocal teacher/coach that analyzed Jungkook's ability as a vocalist full detail on 1st listen.
Im shooked.
He is severely under rated as a really talented vocalist imo. Since he's good in alot of aspects, his ability as a vocalist often get overlook.
I have seen many reactions to BTS. And he's always focused on Jimin's abilities, but Jungkook is highly praised. Those who are underestimated as vocalists are Tae and Jin. And they are very good.

I'm Korean and not good at English, so I couldn't understand everything you said, but I found out through the comments that you mentioned our Korean language. We continue to learn Korean language from elementary school to high school and read literature. In fact, even Koreans don't know Korean language in detail. Because it's too difficult and complicated. But it's a very attractive language! I saw someone briefly explaining the principles of Korean language in the comments.
One of the reasons why Korean is difficult to translate into English is because of its unique feeling. We can't translate a word correctly. For example, in Korean, there is a word "시원하다"(si won ha da) which is used in a very different sense depending on the situation. The most basic meaning is that 'the ice cream is ', and when something difficult is done well, it is said to be "spit it out"(According to the translation results, it means "please tell me how you feel!" It certainly couldn't translate the feeling of the Korean language.)
Or when you go into a bath full of hot water, maybe you say 'I feel good.' It is said '시원하다'(like cool) in korean. You will think about why do they say it's cool when they're in hot water? That's a reasonable idea. I don't even know why. I just use it like a habit!
In the same way, we can say '아름답다'(a rum dab da)(beautiful) in about 250 words.
My hobby is writing novels. Whenever I write, I am amazed at the greatness of Korean language.

Sam, Korean is actually a very fluid language, it's actually hilarious how long winded Korean sentences are. Especially when an ajumma is getting onto or bragging about a younger person, or their husband, they literally will go off for a solid 3 minutes without taking a break for a breath😂. In this song they are intentionally using staccato in this song. But you're right about Chinese, especially mandarin it's a VERY staccato language. Japanese is like a blend of Korean and mandarin, so it's half and half depending on the context of what's being said.

The second rapper, RM, very much has the style with his voice of "beating up" the beat (I love his raspy/gravelly voice), rather than a clear or swaggy rap. J-Hope, the breathy then harder rapper, is my favorite. There's nothing of vocal value in that second sentence, just wanted to share that he's my bias, lol.
Hobi is my Bias wrecker on many occasions because of his melodic rap flow
I think that's what I like about the rap line. They have distinct rap styles that show their 'identity' as rappers but at the same time, can be adjusted to their songs, which is difficult since they tackle A LOT of genres.

I’ve never even watched/heard BTS perform and I really enjoyed this. The amount of structured detail you provide is always the best on CZcams.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Sam is a great vocal coach, he knows a lot, is very unbiased and honest. He's not afraid to say when he's not completely sure or doesn't know.
If you want you can check out some more of Bts, they're incredible. They write and produce their own music, their lyrics hold beautiful meanings. They've done so many different genres aswell. True artists. They've been a group for 7 years now so they have a big discography

I love that they hold their personas after the song ends. That’s something dancers do really well is holding their pose until there is a natural break in connection with the audience. I feel like a lot of singers come out too quickly and not letting the audience contemplate the emotion the song invoked for a few more seconds

Little point about language: Korean is not like Chinese, it is syllable language, just letters look like signs, those staccato moments here are just the certain composition' lyrics specificity, the song was created that way. For legato in Korean I recommend you to listen to Lee Sun Hee's "Destiny".

I love to sing just day to day I just love music and sometimes I whenever I have a question in my head about something I watch a videos and you literally answer my questions for me so thank you this was so helpful and informative. And I love BTS so two birds with one stone! xD
The first one it was Jimin and the second one it was Jin (I'm just answering)
I think he confused Jungkook and Jin for a little bit, as they sang the same verses and in almost the same way. Not Jimin. He was right, Jungkook's voice does have airy quality, so it was Jungkook and Jin.
You're the only reactions I trust about bts because most people who react that at some point were looking to judge the work now just keep positive to get kpop fan attention without giving proper input. I enjoy knowing the technical aspect of it all.
They teach in idol school to hold the pose longer than when the music ends. It looks better on camera to hold the pose than to stop right when the song ends.
Sam (+ all other professional vocal teachers too) praising Jimin and his unique voice, his tone & technique in spite of haters trying to convince everyone he's a "terrible singer" never gets old 💅
And just in general acknowledging BTS as great performers without any prejudices. Thank you, Sam! When they go on stage, they really SLAY.

I just love how you give analysis and in-depth comments even on the smallest detail. Some would just say "Wow", "That's good" and things of the like without really appreciating the details of the performance. I appreciate the genuine reaction and your effort to look closer on the details 💕

While Korean did co-opt Chinese characters to write Korean before developing its own writing system, Korean and Chinese are VASTLY different. Like, so different that the fact that they spent so long using Chinese characters is mind boggling to me.
Whereas, like you note, Chinese tends to be something like monosyllabic, Korean is a strongly agglutinative language. That means that you change words by adding affixes to denote different grammatical things. For example, in Chinese:
Ai = love
Wo ai ni = I love you
The word for love doesn't change. But in Korean:
Sarang = love
Saranghae = I love (you).
The word for love changes (and gets longer) when you use it because it encodes grammatical information.
You'll actually find that this makes Korean way more connected-sounding in pop songs than Chinese is. When it's broken up syllabically (like you notice around 12:10), it's generally a stylistic choice. [I would also bet that it tends to happen more when English words or lines are being worked in.]

So, um. Yes. To agglutenation. You got the definition right... I'm wondering at your translations. Because those Korean morphemes and the English morphemes you chose are not exactly, um, connected.
as a native chinese speaker, i think some of what you mentioned speaks to the almost seamless flow that you can get with Korean, whether in song or rap. i don't listen to a lot of chinese song or rap bc i have a very specific taste in music + i can sometimes barely understand chinese rap - it's not really a language suited for rap.
Great analysis! Korean is actually phonetic, so there are letters that make up words, but it's still a very syllabic language in terms of how it flows. It tends to sound a lot more even all the way through a phrase, as opposed to a roller coaster language like English. So you're half right in that regard, about linguistic differences affecting the way music sounds sometimes.

I actually really enjoy this reaction of Sam because of so many other videos, Sam mentioned alot about techniques and skills. This one he still does but he talks more about how connected and expressive, emotional-delivered their voices are.

I like and agree with how you mentioned they stay very professional and in-character the whole performance! Many times, they've had problems or mini accidents during their performances--even in this one, one of the members accidentally kicked another one in the head while they were dancing--but they try their best to resolve these things without anyone noticing. I think that's a major thing that I appreciate about them, especially after seeing a lot of western artists or other foreign artists who don't hold to their performances. Despite what their intent may be, it just feels really unprofessional, especially when they just stop singing or stop the song and talk about something. I've seen multiple artists do this, and I think some people don't mind but personally I'm not a huge fan of that behavior. I'm not sure how much of BTS you've seen in your free time, but sticking to a performance is something they're known to be good at and I'm glad you were able to pick that out!
Just as a random related-unrelated side thing, I think one of the most memorable and humbling performances was when they were at a concert in Chile. The youngest member, Jungkook, was having issues with breathing and getting enough oxygen since the altitude was so high and they were dancing and singing so much (which was especially bad for him at the time, because his vocal technique used a lot of air/it was extremely breathy). He was feeling sick and light-headed and kept almost passing out and had to be given oxygen a few times until he eventually collapsed backstage. But each time he would come out after and perform and give it his all because he didn't want to disappoint all of the ARMY that came to see them. Overall, he did so well that no one really noticed he was exhausted. That was just an issue that mostly dealt with Jungkook but they've all had their fair share of mishaps and problems throughout the years, and I think that just shows how dedicated they are to their art and their fans. I think it's really admirable and a even a bit humbling that these boys who are so extremely talented and influential would do so much just to put on performances for us, even if they're sick or in pain.

Your comment about how the audience is so moved by the performance despite most not speaking/understanding Korean is a HARD mood especially for us International ARMYs. BTS bring so much soul and feeling into all their performances, and perform as if each audience member is the only one watching them. This, among many other things is why we stan so hard.

Lots of people have mentioned the "persona" comment, so I'm going to focus on some of the other things I also loved about your review. "You can feel things without understanding them" = YESYESYES. The group staying in character and the continuity of the performance.
I was very interested when you were talking about how J-Hope (guy starting the second verse) changes his tone - from a breathy sound into a stronger and more aggressive sound. It's also apparent in how he raps, which makes for a cool contrast with RM (the deep-voiced rapper) and Suga (blonde, more aggressive). Loved hearing your analysis of what stands out about each member, especially picking out Suga as someone with an open, clear sound when he hasn't ever really been a vocalist. My bias is killing the game!
RM just has a deep voice you hear it when he speaks in English also when he does sings. Jimin has a light high voice. People who hear his voice often assume it's a girl singing.
