This is a ritual that’s usually perform when someone is sick. Supposedly, The shaman can communicate with the underworld or spirits to find out what’s causing the illness etc. Not everyone can be a shaman, you have to be the chosen one to be able to do it, it’s call Oua Neng (UA Neeb) in Hmong.
Good evening Todd, I never cease to be fascinated by how open the people are to you and Neenee. Just amazing. Thank you
I enjoyed this episode because you went to a village and showed us all how people live their lives in a Hmong village. They seem happy, though to many in the United States, they wouldn't understand. Lovely people who I hope one day to meet. Thank you!
Another great vlog Todd.... hope the younger generation keep up this part of their culture... have just finished watching the Hmong and the secret war doco on CZcams...tears 😭 just flowed.... brave courageous people...
Of course so many rising shamans in USA. They might be your neighbors
We have no choice. The shamans are chosen spiritualy so it doesn't matter where they live they have to keep up with it.
🤗🙏🏼!
Very interesting. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Have a great weekend.
Fascinating! Thanks Todd.
Great job ya'll!!!! Sooooo awesome!! ty..xoxo 🥰👍✌🤟🖐🤪
Really interesting video, enjoyed the Rodriguez track.
That was an amazing site to see. Thanks Todd. Cheers 😘🥂😘
Good video keep up the good content 😎💯💪🏾
Excellent video Todd 🏄♂️
Thank you for sharing our Hmong culture … love it… thank you
F yea.. thanks for the video you guys are awesome
Good day Todd; thanks for the vedio its very interesting.
Fascinating... absolutely fascinating.🙏👍
My grandfather was a shaman in our Hmong community. It was pretty cool to watch what he was doing when I was a kid. When I got older he stopped doing it because it took a toll on him going thru all of that.
What kind toll if you don't mind me asking?
Beautiful village. Fascinating custom.
Fantastic experience, that's Laos mind blowing.
Thanks!
Much appreciated my friend.. Currently planning our next trip north.. that will help more people than you think. Sending you all our best F&T ❤
Amazing Todd and Nee Nee..Different world from Australia..Thank God..👍
Wow! that was deep.
Sublime experience Ol Mate.😎
Once again Todd you have "the knack...and gutts" to assist such an event which remind me what I experiences during my "toubib" stay at Saignabouli hospital. It was in a remote village about 20 km south from Saigna. Such cultural facts inside the Hmong culture makes them so tied between each other. Here in Brittany I have Hmong friend family who fled the "comunist" take power .They come from that area and will show them your video. Kenavo.
Amazing stuff. Certainly a million miles from downtown Vientiane!
great interpretation skills by NeeNee , you may have to give her a pay rise ol' mate
Todd superb as always
Watched them in the right order for once to lol 😂
This is why I miss Laos The everyday life
Mate i gotta say gee you have some awesome content , I'm commin over for a session one day , sometime next year ,
Nice.
Interesting,,to learn other cultures systems of beliefs. I liked the shot of the 5 year old mommy in training,,rocking her baby bro on the hammock. Loved the drone footage! Our weather is an extreme contrast to the rains. This is our autumn season,,the hardwood leaves are turning beautiful colors,,the days perfect temp ,,70f about 15c ,,nice chilly nights,,so with nice warm blankets,,you sleep good. I want to go camping,,but everyone is afraid to go with me this soon after o.h. surgery. Chickenshits!! Lol I went back to my little job today,,1st time since Aug. 3rd. I kinda got wore out,,but made it ok. Thanks for taking us somewhere that I personally would never visit. Todd,,you and Neenee be safe,,and take care! Ttyl,,,Marlon
Wow is right 👍🙂
Thanks Todd, a million thanks. My wife lives in Laos and yes the ritual is loud and hard to understand especially as kids, only the elders understand
It makes as much sense as any other religion. Everyone can believe in what they want.
Hey Todd Miss universe Lao 2022 is also hmong. She knows very good English too.
Looks like neeb fab laj. This is for the older folks/parents. A lot is involve in this ritual. At least a son and his wife, daughter and her husband, and younger brother and his wife is needed. Another person to bring the parents soul back to unit with the family. This ritual is on a higher level and not the usual one. When you understand what ua neeb is, it does make sense.
Another awesome video Todd. I’ll be in Lao for a few weeks next week. If ur down around the Pakse area look me up and I’ll shout ya a beer or ten. I’ll be taking my own salt n vinegar chips also 😁😁. Cheers Craig
You should go visit my dad down south in pakse. He owns a lot of markets down there. It would be nice to see his village
Hi Todd, hope you're both doing well
As always enjoyed the video.
I'm really interested in things like shaman so this was a real pleasure to watch. It Seemed very surreal.
By the way I've noticed your language skills have improved since the first videos.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks 😉
❤
Just an suggestion maybe do the black and white before and ar the end.
I did really like the video
Todd we Hmong Americans call that jingle bell ritual.
@@AsianAmericanGuy That's probably because I'm neither, perhaps just human, however I do respect all religion .
No such term....you just called it that because of christmas bells....
@@dongdick1730 depending on which part of the world and who we associate with we have variety of nicknames and slang. In my part of the city we call it ua neej and other parts call it Hu plig
Jingle Bell is just a term relating to Xmas by the younger generation in the USA. In reality, we still call it ua neeb.
@@AsianAmericanGuy i was referring to jingle bell ritual...that is not a real term....that was just made up by kids...
I am reminded of a half brother of mine many years ago. He was a serious drug user, anything and everything he came across. I remember several times watching him do similar to the Shaman you are showing. I believe I may have to reevaluate my perception of him. Anyway, thanks again
👍
Hmong people are so mysterious to me,
I wasn't aware they have ritual like this 😯 Make me even more curious about.
Becareful about the pork, a bit graphic for yt I think. Btw great vid's, want to see more like this ♥️ take care & enjoy with Nene
If you are curious, there are plenty of videos on youtube about it.
Lucky, they usually don’t allow outsiders to film such ritual.
I’m homng
Want to see how a hmong shaman ritual is like inside america? you can try watching the movie grand torino but in that movie it is not how the actual ceremony goes down in the states just a PG13 version.
your videos are on a par if not better in some ways to HBO Docos ... credit to you both
Give to the Pig to the ghosts to eat before cooking for the people to eat! Wow
I watched your channel often and understand that you collected few Hmong knives. Do you ever get to use them?
That hmong knife would of been useful during the ritual ceremony, chop up the sacraficed pig.
No, not really, just like to collect. I do bring one of the smaller ones away with us when we travel.. cut up the bananas for our oats each morning 😝
Everything has a purpose in life: Spiritual healing is for the spirit. It’s a gift to be a Shaman and there are a lot of fake ones these days. The calling is real and people wouldn’t believe it if it wasn’t real. Just like the Church, you have your bad apples amongst those who’s intent is only to do good.
A good Shaman can easily diagnose whether a problem or sickness is spiritual or physical alignment. We have so much mental health issue these days because there are sickness beyond the reach of medicine.
The shaman travels to the spiritual world where a sick person's spirit is being held by a demon; the shaman is negotiating with the demon to replace the sick person's spirit with that of the animal's spirit. Thus, the animal sacrificed.
WE ARE HMONG / MONGOLIAN / TARTARIANS
Rio Bar mag wheels on the tractor
Here’s the thing. Those shamans are usually out of shape. But they can go at it for hours🤷🏻♂️
Sometime .shaman go three days and nights none stop.only short breaks in between.
Todd, only those who have been chosen by spirit guides can be a shaman. If someone says they are a shaman but they have no spirit guides, then that person is a charlatan. A person who is chosen can be chosen as young as a child or late in life (middle age). It is not a "job" that you can just train for.
Need a better guide, .....my people would had open up
I accepted a teaching job in Laos in April of this year, but I had to go to Cambodia first and meet with the people who were sending me there. It was around the time of a National holiday and they had me stay in an apartment in Phnom Penh for about three weeks. I got my visa to Laos, then had to get my Covid check before boarding the plane. On the day that I was to leave for Vientiane, I was in line, got to the flight agent and she said that I couldn't go because I didn't have a visa for Vietnam. I told her I was only landing there to get to Laos. She said it didn't matter, Americans have to have a visa and she refused to allow me on the plane. I asked what I could do, and she said I had to go to the Vietnamese embassy and get a visa, which meant, another Covid test, ?? how many more days in Cambodia, and how much more must I pay. I immediately called the company that arranged all of this and told them what happened, and they didn't understand why I needed a Vietnamese visa. So, after spending weeks in Cambodia, paying 130 US dollars for Covid tests, that's x2 so 260, paying for lodging, not being picked up on my arrival in Cambodia, I was fed up and decided to go back to the states. I was so looking forward to working in Laos, but hopefully, I will visit there now that I understand things better and what to do and who not to listen to.
ASK A 60 YEAR OLD AMERICAN PASTOR TO JUMP UP AND DOW FOR AN HOUR. JUMPING BACKWARD IS DIFFICULT. ONLY THE SICK AND A CALLING TO BE SHAMAN CAN PERFORM.
Hmong are indeed animists. You asked if the young men will pick up the shaman mantel. However, it really isn't a personal choice to take up the vocation. Many who yearn the prestige that shaman's command have tried to become shamans only to fail. One has to be "chosen" by the "spirts" through conspicuous signs such as unexplained illness, visions, or disturbing dreams that can only be diagnosed and resolved by another shaman. If these signs are indeed a "calling," the intercessory shaman will prescribe "taking up the cloth" as the only cure for these "maladies."
In the U.S. there are a number of well educated and sophisticated young professionals who previously dismissed "Shamanism" as quackery have been "called" and had no choice but to take up the "cloth." As a Christian, I have an alternative explanation. However, I do not wish to offend my fellow co-ethnics.
The chants are sprinkled with Hmong-Mandarin creole among a sea of unintelligible "spirit" language.
Too scary
You shouldn't film rituals without consent. It is said that filming shaman, funerals, or other spiritual practices In hmong culture is not only offensive but may have bad harm
You really think we would do this without consent? 😐😏
@@NowinLao even with consent only people studying and doing it for education purpose can do. Just filming for vlog shouldn't be done
@@st4r444 Why can't you comprehend what was written in his answer. SHHH!
@@dellingson4833 why can't you comprehend my culture??? We don't film anything and only family members may if they wish to do so not outsiders. Even academic researchers clearly state their purpose and reason behind their filming.
They waved us in. They were happy to have us there, ask about our trip, answer our questions, capture their customs and even offered us food.
Not all Hmong clans have the same rules, just like this ritual may be performed differently by this Shaman compared to other Shamans, all depending on what has been passed down to them by their clan ancestors.

Thank you for appreciating my religion. It's been demonized by Westerners so much. We would always have to defend our religion, and it sickens me. Thank you for o being open-minded.
Thanks!
Did this work?
Whoa! Didn't see this one until after I had answered your last.. It works my friend! That will help so many.. Thank you! You will definitely see where that goes when we head back up north after the Hmong New Year in Xiangkuang and then onto the most isolated parts of Lao. You wont be disappointed. Take care mate 🙏
