Prai live in two widespread areas of northern Laos. One group live in Phongsali Province, the northernmost province of Laos, in the Boun-Tai, Boun-Nua, Phongsali and Samphan districts. A large number of Prai also live in Xaignabouri Province, further south. They live in the Hongsa, Xaignabouri and Phiang districts of Xaignabouri Province. Others live in neighboring Thailand.
    What Are Their Lives Like?
The Prai are generally known as a poverty-stricken and despised people, with a poor sense of self-worth. In some places they have hired themselves out to Hmong and Mien as menial laborers. Their hard lives contribute to their generally dejected appearance. Whatever property or wealth a Prai family is able to gather is inherited by the youngest daughter.
The Prai "typically subsist by hunting for wild game, raising domestic animals and farming small plots of land. Since metal is taboo in their culture, they are particularly skilled at manipulating bamboo to make everything needed around the house; for floor mats and baskets they interweave pared bamboo with a black-colored grass to create bold geometric patterns."
    What Are Their Beliefs?
There is some Buddhist influence among the Prai in Laos. Several villages are reported to have temples, but the majority of Prai remain bound to traditions and a host of evil spirits that they feel forced to continually placate.

Ay Todd, you’ve every right to sling that dagger at those who should do more. But regarding a mobile hospital bus, I think that is a great idea, but a bit more complex to execute. I’m willing to support one such mobile hospital to see how it would work. Here in the U.S., my wife and have donated funds to purchase and furnish a fully equipped mobile vaccination van, but that was in partnership with our alma mater’s School of Pharmacy. Todd, do you know of any connection to such school or hospital in Vieng Chanh who would be a good partner in such a charitable venture? Btw, another gem of a video; amazing vistas, and as always, great music selection.❤

Jeez mate, your production style is now tip top pro level - that opening sequence of car, drone, car and drone was brilliant in showing where you were - a total of 10 seconds and any viewer get it straight away. A great vid of an unusual place - well done Todd - huge thumbs up. No amount of personal charity work will ever compensate and will just scratch the surface bud BUT those you touch will always remember a strangers kindness so think of the positive effects you two are having - its humbling mate. The black & while imagery really captures the peoples self respect, pride and gratitude - brilliantly captured mate, got that damn dust in my eyes again ya bugger. Even after all these years I cant find a coping mechanism to get me over the Resource rich but cash poor people - jeez I must have bought hundreds of school uniforms by now lol.

Beautiful countryside. What strikes me about these remote peoples in your vlogs is how clean and orderly these villages are the poorer they are. Here I am in Birmingham UK and some of these neighborhoods look more trash tips. Only a matter of how one defines wealth! But you’re right Todd - all the reading about slash & burn doesn’t really make a point until you are amongst them.

Hi Guy's Taro would be an excellent vegetable (for American(in particular) to add to their diet as it has twice the fiber of potatoes and many minerals and vitamins missing in the average western diet. It is also very low in fat and protean. As for growing on the side of a hill like that on that soil, I cant imagine how it is worth the enormous effort they put into it. Once jungle is cleared it is dead within 2-3 years, which is why they are constantly clearing it. Unlike the northern hemisphere the nutrients are all in the plants, so once cleared the soil dies quickly. What I would advise them to do is create swale's that would stop the rain sliding down the hill. I would also change to cassava which is more drought tolerant plant.
The eye issue the woman had is cataract (a clouding of the eye lenses) which effects 50% of all Americans over 65. Check out "Fred Hollows" who was a Kiwi who went decades ago) around Australia and the Pacific doing operations on a production line basis at $25 a pop. Causes (apart from ageing) are bright sunlight, high blood pressure, diabetes, alcohol, and genetics (in other words your parents had the same issues and that was passed on to you).
The water supply was interesting in that it seemed to work at the top of a hill with no pump

I'm with you, brother! Its gotta be heartwrenching to have to drive away with little kids big eyeing you because they got left out. I'm happy you were gonna return. People just kept coming out of the woodwork,,hard to tell them no. Inspired choice with The Who coming down the 50 mile view hills. The sections of that road that have been rebuilt,,they did a great job on. The rest of it is pretty shit. Hope your weekend is going superbly! lol,,Ttyl,,,Marlon

Thanks for sharing with all these kids. If there is a god, you're doing his work.
When you return with more clothes for the kids who missed ot, Try to find out if they have access to education, and how much.

This is the ideal civilised living. Far from having “everything material” you can sense the community connect. I just hope they can delay our capitalisation coming in like a wrecking ball.

The hill on which taro are grown is barren and devoid of trees, how about starting some trees (fruits trees) planting project (with the help of govt and NGO of course)

Distance is always a problem to export or sell. extra cost make things more cost then else.
