    The Swedish Navy is mostly remembered for the Vasa, the flagship which sank on her maiden voyage. Whilst it was an embarassing and costly incident, the consequences were not that serious. There was a naval disaster which was much worse than the Vasa. In 1676, Swedish a flagship twice the size of the Vasa, carrying twice as many cannons, capsized and EXPLODED. 800 men perished in an instant. This was in the full view of both her allies, and her enemies. It resulted in a naval invasion of Swedish soil. Some blame it on luck, others on the incompetence of its commanders. Some blame it on a curse, put on the ship's commander, after his savage persecution of witches. This is the disaster of Regalskeppet Stora Kronan - the Great Crown.

    When you described the destruction of the Crown all I could think of was that scene from that horrible movie where the man o war gets broadsided from both sides and the governor walks across the deck while a whole world's worth of splinters politely fly around him instead of into him

    I know it's just the first video (it's great BTW), but I'm already waiting for your covering of polish-swedish wars. I'm very interested in what swedish sources say about them.

      since Sandrhoman got a lengthy series covering them, I won't do the Polish-Swedish war for a longlong while. I've got a 1hr documentary on Gustavus coming up soon however. I am interested in covering other conflicts between Sweden and Poland, however, like the Civil War in 1598-99 that saw Sigismund deposed, and ofcourse, Charles X's polish war aka the Swedish Deluge.

    A really good video, adding to what I learned maybe 30 or 40 years ago watching documentaries about the Vasa and the sinking of the Crown - the odd little discrepancy but really good - thank you. Baltic history is so very interesting to an East Anglian ( originally a seafarer from Liverpool)

    It sounds like the disaster was caused by the arrogance of the sailing master (assuming the account is true) but by that point Kreutz had lost authority among his crew, for which he was responsible.

    From what I was able to find, the Padre Eterno was only 2000 tons displacement, not 3000 (and, so, smaller than Kronan).
    Edit - maybe I’m looking at a different tonnage? The Royal Sovereign also seems to have been less, before it was rebuilt a third time after a fire (though even then, 1701, it’s only ~1900 tons).

      @user-zr6pw7vh9u Před 8 měsíci +1

      To be honest that royal sovereign isn't a rebuild, but a new different ship which inherited the name and used some salvaged woods from the previous sovereign in her construction

    I've been to the museum. Gorgeous cannons and well-preserved artifacts. Yes, the Admiral should have stayed home and been a figurehead. He should have let the sailors be and the battle could have been won, but that's not the history. Everything happens for a reason.

    Denmark declared war against Sweden in 1657 Sweden and Karl X Gustav responded by getting peace with Poland and march from Poland through Swedish pomerania towards Denmark when the swedes managed to march over the danish straits in the unusually cold winter and when the danish saw the Swedish army outside Copenhagen after a short fight the Danes surrendered and in the peace in 1658 the Danes gave up all of Scania (Skåne), Blekinge Halland and more to Sweden. The danes they never forgot it so in 1675 Denmark invaded Sweden again in hope to take back all the lost territories start of skånska kriget (the scania war) but the Danes lost the most important battle of that war battle of Lund 4:th of december 1676 after failing to beat the force controlled by Karl XI (Charles XI) so Denmark so Denmark had no chance of winning that war either and in the peace signed 1679 Denmark had to pay huge expensive War Reparations.
    Kronan had a part of Skånska kriget (the Scania war) 1:st of june 1676 kronan sank at the batte of Öland's south strait.

      Sweden didn't make peace with Poland. The remaining troops dug in against the onslaught of Austrian and Brandenburgian troops adding to the Poles, While Sweden also fought Russia in the East. Charles X was planning an invasion of Brandenburg as he died.
