Sweden is nowadays known as a bit of a paradise. 400 years ago it was a frozen hellhole where the poor locals sustained themselves on bark bread. Yet somehow, this barbarian country of just a million inhabitants was able to smack in the teeth of its much larger neighbors, and make itself known on a global stage. There was a time when the fate of Europe rested in Swedish hands. But how? In this video we will explore the systems that enabled Sweden's explosive rise to power.

This far north the winter part is extremely dark and daylight rare, on the flipside the summers are bright well into nighttime. Seasonal depression is definitely an issue in northern Europe 😅

I am sceptical of the 15th century wars of liberation. For example, at battle of Brunkebergstog, the Uppland yeomen supported the Danes. It looks more like the Hansa supporting rebellions against Denmark.
Scandinavia had two chances to become unified. In 14 century under Denmark. And more brutally under Charles X in the 17th century. As history turned out, I mourn both missed opportunities but the former more than the latter.
Well, maybe Canute had a viable bid too.

Nice video. Just 1 thing, Spain was not really centralised, under "Catholic Kings" and even after it, Spain was divided into several Kingdoms which had different institutions, justice and laws.

Thanks for this video. European history is so interestingly complex . I'm interested in the Yellow flag shown at 18:40, could you please tell me what it is and what it represents?

Hmm, as a Swede with some familiarity with our royal symbols i can deduce a few things.
Danish flag canton means it's Danish. There's a crown symbol above a C4 combo which stands for Christian IV, king of Denmark.
IEHOVA DIRIGE MEVM (Jehova directs me) would be his royal motto.
The flag is too simple to be his standard so it must be a Danish battle flag, honoring the king.
There is allso a heart and an eagle.
There are several hearts on the Danish coat of arms which presumably have some significance but i don't know what.
Can't tell you anything about the eagle except that the symbol is common.

The wealthiest person in swedish history might have been Bo Jonsson Grip. It is claimed thet he personally owned all of Finland, and big parts of Sweden an Norway. His methods were of the more unorthodox kind. One of his wifes, of a very wealthy family, died in childbirth. Grip was asked, as it was clear that a choice must be made who to try to save, he choose the child. The woman died, and the child maybe a day later. But the law was such that the child inherited the mother, and the father inherited the child. Her family was not happy.

This pattern of states centralizing for more military power and thereby becoming worse places to live for almost everyone makes me wonder if LOTR is a sort of "What if the centralizers lost?" fantasy.

All this begs the question: what the hell was Norway doing! Its funny to watch this as an American of Polish, Swedish, Norwegian, and German descent. All my ancestors beating the hell out of each other over trade routes in the baltic. Recontextualizes my Medieval Two campaigns in these regions.
