The name Gustav bears great power. In ancient norse, it means "Staff of the Goths". From a more latin angle, it was interpreted as Augustus - ruler of the world. On the 9th of December, 1594, a child was born in the palace of Stockholm - Gustav Adolf. In thirty-six years, the child would decide the fate of Europe. His countrymen would name him The Great, but to the protestant world he would forever be called: Der Löwe aus Mitternacht: Lion of the North!

The swedish empire was a complete blindspot in my knowledge of history up until recently. Before this I skipped pretty much straight from the viking age to WW2. I had been dimly aware there was an empire at some point, I've seen Potop, but this really helped fill in the gaps. Thanks.

Thank you for this great video! I come from Slovakia in Germany for the first time to work and I come directly in Lutzen, for one month, then I moved to Weißenfels only few kilometer far. Loving history this place ideal for me, I decided to stay living here yet before I step off the car when I come in Lutzen. Gustav Adolf very respected historical personality here. Schools honoring his name, Gustav Adolf Gymnasium in Weißenfels, Gustav Adolf school in Lützen also. I live 300m from the Gustav Adolf Monument 1632-1932 here in Weißenfels any go there almost every day sit down have a cigarette relax and think about history 😉

This era of Swedish history rarely gets talked about here (though I guess it’s gaining popularity to an extent) and this is one of the best videos I’ve seen on the subject. Gustavus was obviously already a legend during his lifetime and IMO his story and the telling of it is ripe for this generation of internet culture, which I love that you included. Aside from being a Christian, he was pretty much the Viking of his day. I’ve honestly spent more time researching the life of his daughter Kristina but Gustavus’s life and adventures sound amazing. What book or books do those modern illustrations come from? I’ve never seen them before, but they look amazing and really bring Gustavus’s life and family and times to life. I’ve known about little Kristina’s letter to him for a while, but hearing it actually read out is very touching and I could hear the emotion in your voice. After Gustavus left for the last time, Kristina actually cried for three days straight and it scared everyone because even as a toddler she usually never cried. It’s like part of her knew he wasn’t coming home. Funnily enough, when Kristina grew up she tried to get herself elected as queen of Poland and I had no idea her father tried to get into their elections too!

The illustrations are from the books by Göte Göransson. I borrowed one of them from the library and the other I was lucky enough to find for only 2 bucks at a second hand store.

I would have considered any attempt at recounting *anything* from the Thirty Years War with a light touch would be...impossible. Or tasteless. But you did somehow manage to pull it off 😂

Bra att du nämnde de viktigaste orsakerna till de militära framgångarna under Gustav Adolf den stores tid, reorganisationen av civilförvaltningen och krigsmakten och vikten av logistik för att kunna föra ett modernt krig.

In Southern Germany and Austria there is no good memory of the Swedes from this time. There Gustav Adolf an his troops are somewhere near Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan in the collective memory.

  • @abvmoose87

He was great leader offcourse but my view have always been that Karl was very much a product of a highly capable group of the country's elite, all working together to give him nothing but the absolute best education possible at that time and in every conceivable way guide and mold him for his future task when acending the throne. There are times when I get the impression that the common notion is that he just got this idea out of the blue one day to start waging wars, just for the heck of it.
The true reason was that he was more or less groomed for this role from the day he was born by this group of elites acting as his guardians.
Not just as a King, but a military leader.
He notably pushed through important reforms but I believe the groundwork for them was layed several decades earlier.
Another thing worth pointing out is that the militarism that grew out of Sweden at this time wasn't something conceived in an eventless vaccum, but was in fact a response to countless agressions by neigbouring countries purported over a prolonged stretch of time.
The success of Karl XII is a testament to what is possible and can be achieved if the intelligentia or elite of a country, instead of like today, sellout their country for short term gain and screw over the lower classes of their countrymen, work together for the betterment of the country and for what is actually in the best interest of the people long term.
Sadly alot of good people lost their lives during the many clashes, but refraining from taking up arms wasn't exactly something that was optional at this time in Europe.
Thanks to the effort of alot of very capable bright men in the upper class who knew what they were doing and not the least the result of unimaginable sacrifices made by countless thousands of good men, and allthough alot of territorial gains could not be retained, Sweden secured the region within it's borders that had previously been under threat and established itself as a force to be reckoned with.
