Whilst the Vikings are mostly famous for their attacks on foreign countries like England, France and Ireland, not even the Norse themselves were safe from their own kind. In the 10th century, Western Iceland was haunted by a band of Vikings led by Óspak Kjallakson. Originally a farmer, Óspak took to travelling the coast and plundering his neighbors. He and his thirty supporters retired to a small wooden fort, where they held off their besiegers until Ospak died, and his followers surrendered.
So too were pirates a threat on mainland Scandinavia. In the 11th to 13th centuries, Slavic pirates posed a huge threat to the Scandinavian Kingdoms. Neither were they safe from their neighbors. The other Kings might wish to expand their realms through conquest, and measures had to be implemented to safeguard the coastlines of Norway, Denmark and Sweden.

I always thought how fascinating it would be if photography was around back then, being able to see post battle images like we have from the Civil War, WW1, WW2 etc.
It would be horrible seeing people being chopped apart. That's how I think when I think of war back then.

Most underrated chanel, really appreciate the research and effort that goes into these videos
I like the paintings of the ships on shore with full sails and warriors wading ashore....lol
It's really cool to have found a channel that goes into such detail on naval history. Could you by chance make a video about navel battle during the crusades or the 100 year war? So after the viking era but before gun powder was the norm for ship combat?
Nope, just pirates and Vikings. Sorry.
Love both your channels
Really well-made and interesting avideo!

I am descended from Vikings, I’m sure of it. That’s why I am fascinated by any old BS about them!
