- Both Reduction and Yau5 are great methods with similar potential on 5x5. Differences listed below:
Reduction (centers - edges - 3x3):
- easy to do color neutral centers
- much faster centers
- is arguably better than yau5 on cubes 6x6 and up
Yau5 (centers & cross - edges - 3x3):
- similar to 4x4 yau method
- easier look ahead during edge pairing
- avoids turning the cube upside down
- much faster 3x3 stage
- restricted to 2 cross colors unless you are color neutral for 3x3

After cubing with 5x5, 4x4 feels like 3x3 and 3x3 feels like 2x2
Agreed, and after solving 7x7, 5x5 is like not a cube
So... what does 2x2 feel lile? 1x1?
Then 1x1 feels like 0x0
Btw after i touched a mastermorphix now im wondering why my 5x5 is square lol
MarvelGamers - Gaming 0x0 feels like -1x-1
Thanks for this video, I always had doubts about how to properly use free slice without breaking the centers and thanks to your video I now understand perfectly! Greetings from Costa Rica!
I feel like the best part about J Perm's videos are his thumbnails. Just entices you to watch his videos.
Wow. Free slicing is actually pretty easy. Thanks man 👍🏽
I can't help you with Patreon right now (credit card problems) but I'm so happy for see that a lot of people is helping you. Thanks to they, and thanks to you for this video and for everything! :D
no problem, i appreciate that you considered it :)
yeah we're almost at a goal where i can start working on a surprise type of video :O
WHY YOUR TUTORIALS SO GODD?
Lol there is a comment above you saying the same thing
Thanks for this video. I've always wondered what the "proper" method is for the edges. I've developed my own method and was surprised when someone talked about parity as I never have to deal with parity. But I'm sure I could do much quicker if I learned the parity algorithm and other aspects. Here is my edge method:
First, just move any edge I see that has white in it to the center edges, aligned with the white face in the same direction so they can be sliced together. Once I have enough white faces, start finishing edges and moving them off, at the same time, start bringing in the yellow edges in the same way. This will eventually finish all 8 edges. Now, I realign the centers and start getting pairs of edge pieces on each edge by slicing on one end and then flipping them into position. Once all 4 last edges have 2 correct, I slice and rearrange edges until I can simply do a slice and fix all 4 edges. Unfortunately at this point, I often end with the centers offset and have to do a bit of commuting the edges into place.
I feel really good about the first 8 edges, but think that I could use some of your methods to help with the final 4. (I currently solve in about 5 minutes each solve.)
Your tutorials are awesome
I use Yau 5 on 5x5 and 6x6. Edges are easier and cross is easier. 6x6 L4E is also very fun with Yau 5, but I would still recommend reduction for 6x6 unless you know specifically what your strengths and weaknesses are (basically if your lookahead during edges, and your 3x3 stage cross is worse than the rest of your solve). On 7x7 the middle bar is annoying and there are more slice moves, so Yau 5 is a bit harder.
I tried yau5 on 6x6 for a bit and I feel like it works, but even with my bad redux skills I'm still far better with redux
For me I stagnated at 3:10 for very long with redux. Then I switched to Yau5 and managed to sub 2:50. Then I got the AoShi GTS M and went down to 2:37-2:38. For 5x5 I was using Yau even before I knew 3-2-3 and freeslicing existed and practiced the method for 2-3 years before picking up 6x6, probably why I was so much used to Yau than redux.
I freeslice on m
Why is that not called yau 6?

THANK YOU so much this helped my average drop by almost 20 seconds this si the best video for 5x5 ever
I LITERALLY LOOKED FOR THIS TUTORIAL YESTERDAY IN YOUR CHANEL
this helped me a lot of 5x5 and 6x6 thank you very much
Finally a good tutorial on 5x5 Reduction
Another great tutorial! Thanks :)
I don't have a 5x5 I solved a 5x5 on my phone. Great video . I will rewatch this video next year when I wanna start 5x5
Helped alot! THX for tutorial.😜
Just got my
4:20 min pr on 4x4
6:23 min pr on my 5x5
14:02 minutes PR on my 6x6
All at once just because of your tutorial
It's much easier and faster than the beginner method.
Thanks now I can solve my cube i subbed you are the greatest CZcamsr
J Perm you are the best cuber ever
Amazing Video!!
I love your vids
The fliping alg : R' F R F' R U' R' is better because has no regrips
Caio Almeida Martins I
agree
Agree
It's also easier to memorize because it's just sledgehammer + insert (R U' R').
this is good on 5x5 because no regrips, but on even larger cubes the one I showed is better to avoid left handed moves.
I am just luvin ur videos
It the best and always help me with cubing
Jperm my fav!
Amazing jperm......u r the best CZcamsr ( youcuber)😃😃👍🏻👍🏻
wow man this is cool
Love it !!!!
the five by five looks like its so much simpler than it really does
For basic reduction on any cube, insert the 1st 4 edges into the bottom so that you don’t have to look on the bottom after that to make lookahead a lot easier.
Isn't that the same thing as Yau? Starting with a partial cross to get all non white pieces on the sides and top row for easy search?
Joseph Simone I said to just put them into the bottom to get them out of the way, not actually specifically solve the ones for the cross, and even if you do, it’s still not Yau because for Yau, you solve & insert the first 3 edges before L4C & maybe also solve the 4th one and move it out of the way, and then you solve/insert the last cross edge upon finishing L4C.

I am going to use yau 5 because I really like the way yau is set up on 4x4. It has not worked well but now that know how to do it correctly I will start using it
awesome! keep in mind that on 4x4, Yau is better than redux by a lot. but on 5x5, Yau and redux are about the same
Yee Cuber lol I see u all the time too, but that tends to happen with a lot of people
I have an idea for a big cube method that really only works on 4x4 and 5x5. Make the white center on the bottom, then make center bars for the e slice centers, but before you put it in, attach a cross edge or wing piece so you make the cross at the same time
That's a cool idea
Can you make tutorial on 4x4 edge pairing because im so slow at it please make a 4x4 edge pairing tutorial it would mean the world to me
3-2-3 edge pairing tutorial, I have one
@@JPerm ohh thanks soo much you are the best
@@thomac9656 stop being such a big fanboy lmao
Lol after a 5x5 session and you go back to your 3x3, you feel like it is so tiny and smol
For 5x5, I have developed this habit of inserting edges from the bottom instead of doing a z2, not sure if it's good or not but I've found it's easier on lookahead for me
For instance I would do a half x rotation and do something like F' R F R' to bring an edge up
I think it's good since you can lookahead faster.
Nice cubing channel
Subscribed!!
plz make a video on how to easily and do edge pairing quickly . i am really bad at recognision on 5*5 .
He is veary easy for me to yours video
Thanks J Perm
what do you do if the last 2 edges are like the m" u2 m move? because it will always break the back edge
Your videos are awesome! I want to make videos like yours - what do you recommend for a filming setup (including camera + lighting + tech models).
LOVE YOUR VIDS!
thanks! use as much light as possible, my lighting setup is the ceiling light + natural light from the window. night time filming is fine but my light isnt super bright. for camera i use my samsung galaxy s7 phone camera
J Perm thanks
After solving 5*5 for a hour if we get 3*3 to hands it feels very primary and easy!!
I am very confused that which method I have to choose to become faster reduction or yau5 method which method is the faster? Please help me
Can you make a specific 5x5 free slice edge tutorial including special cases
good idea! i'll think about it
YAAAAAAAAAAAAY A NEW VIDEO (I am now considering to do this every video cuz I love them) also have you tried the yuxin huanglong 3x3 m and how does it compare to the gts2m and the valk. love your videos!!!😊😊😊😊😊
I'll review it once I get it, haven't tried it yet :p
The huanglong is very good but depending in your turning style I would recommend it or the valk M
Should the f2l pairs should be on the same side or could it be diagonal
Can you please teach last 2 centres and last 2 edges for 6x6 and 7x7. Or can you give me a suggestion in who I can watch to learn?
Have you ever given standard Yau a shot (aka not solving and inserting two adjacent "pairs" before L4E) and if so, what are your thoughts on that vs Yau5?
what I do now is only insert obvious pairs that are in the top layer already, sometimes just 1, usually 0. I prefer having more freedom to make yellow edges as well, and I think Yau is faster for most cases.
one big problem about yau5 is if the f2l pairs are hard to make and you end up doing so many moves that now every slot includes a solved edge. in that case you have to do even more moves to put unsolved edges into the slots again.
Do you have any tutorials or videos of you doing 6x6?
Cool!
Can you make a video about upgrade the magnetic cube
Nice
J Perm would you recommend the supernova wushang
I use Redux, and sometimes I make the white edges first and store them in the white center, so i can skip the cross in 3x3 stage.
So that's Yau4 but on 5x5
Hi the GAN you used in tha last video is sticker or stickerless??
I barely understand this.. But i like it
Can you make a tutorial of 5x5 edges pairing for Yau5?
dylan is colour neutral on yau5 :o Coincidence, i am too
I’ve been doing 5x5 for a while now and am going to buy a magnetic one. The ones that I am looking into are the MGC and the Valk. Which one of those are better, or would you recommend another?
I think valk 5 m is better???
I use my weird mix of things on 4x4 I use redux for centers then I solve the cross. Then I do two f2l edges in the back and then do edge pairing and it makes it really easy because it takes me forever to solve yau
Rock da Cuber you may want to look at the hoya method, it makes 4 centres then the cross and then the next 2 centres then anything else for the rest
Tq
Is free slice the only thing that differentiates Redux from Beginner's method?
Makes more sense
No mention of parity at the last edge? There's no way other than with a/the parity alg, right?
Can you make a video about some useful tricks and tips for freeslice?
I already did :)
Oh yeah you are right, I guess I missed that, thanks!
At 0:58, is there a particular reason you wouldn't just do R2 to get that piece lined up, and then slice its layer twice, instead of doing the whole flipping alg? I've been solving big cubes for many years but haven't tried to improve any of my reduction algs until recently.
Doing an R2 will only work sometimes, it’s best to get into the habit of doing the flipping alg
cyotheking has a tutorial on third centers (like half centers on 4x4x4) if you want to learn it until J Perm makes one.
You're everywhere on cubing vids
can you do a reduction example solve
Does max park and feliks use reduction to set world records?
I just realized I learned Yau on 4x4 before reduction
Can you make yau5 method tutorial vedio with some more videos
J perm can you make the last 2 pairs tutorial?
Have you heard about the weilong gts3m and will you review it once it comes out
yeah i have, the design looks interesting and i'm kind of skeptical haha
Which one is better??
Which is the 7x7 runiks cube
I get it tough to get the last two edges it's totally confusing because I didn't learn 4x4 cube
Cries in hoya
What 5*5 method is best?
Also I use reduction for 5x5 and yau for 4x4 do you think I should change to yau5?
yau5 and redux are both great. the world records are on redux but Ciaran is really good and uses yau5
how do you solve centers after free slice
Does parity comes even in 5×5 cube like 4×4
Approximately how much time redux method takes?
Plz make a vid on 2x2 cll
Wow! The reduction method on 5x5 is a lot like 3-2-3 edge pairing on 4x4!
What 5x5 do you use?
Hey J Perm, are you going to buy the YuXin HuangLong 3x3 M? Cause when I got it, I get a lot of better times and somehow using this cube my look ahead has improve. :)
yes :) i'm excited
Is it wise to purposely swap two opposite cross pices then do m2 u2 m2 to fix cuz i dont see alot of speedcubers do this
If you can avoid it, please do.
You should use an alternative flipping alg such as R' F R F' R U' R'
Can you do the redo cube
Do how to get fast at the other NxN events ( 6x6 I'm desperate )
James Pirie czcams.com/video/qfdmRCRGLDA/video.html seenif this vid helps
How did you set up your wushuang? The outer layers on mine are smooth but tend to catch a lot while doing 3x3 stage which makes turning fast a big pain :(
magnetic makes a huge difference. but for lubing, check out chris olson's tutorial
can i use yau5 method on 7x7
Which do u use?
I use redux+yau+freeslice(solve all centers,then 4 cross edges,then solve all 8 edges using freeslice)
Does it have a chance of parity in yau5
I use reduction, but I’m considering switching to yau5 because it has so much potential.
how was it?
@@nqmnz._2745 I still use redux for 5x5+ but I switched to yau for 4x4. I used to be like 2 mins with redux on 4x4 but now I’m like 1 min still rlly slow 😂
@@wilcuber6376 oh, ok. on 4x4 ur 'definitely' need to use yau cause it's way faster.

What do you do if the edges solved for the f2l are across from each other
if the solved ones are BL and FR, do an R' move to store the FR pair away. then you can do edge pairing normally and then do R at the end to bring it back
Hey, I noticed that your flip algorithm was R U R' F R' F' R and Chris Olson did make a video on this but there is another edge flip algorithm which is (R' F R F') (R U' R') I find this alg to be quicker and easier to finger trick.
That is what I use reducing didn't know
Which is better redux or yau5
