  • Both Reduction and Yau5 are great methods with similar potential on 5x5. Differences listed below:
    Reduction (centers - edges - 3x3):
    - easy to do color neutral centers
    - much faster centers
    - is arguably better than yau5 on cubes 6x6 and up
    Yau5 (centers & cross - edges - 3x3):
    - similar to 4x4 yau method
    - easier look ahead during edge pairing
    - avoids turning the cube upside down
    - much faster 3x3 stage
    - restricted to 2 cross colors unless you are color neutral for 3x3
    Free Slice Edge Inserts:
    R U' R'
    F R' F' R
    Flipping Algorithm:
    R U R' F R' F' R

    Thanks for this video. I've always wondered what the "proper" method is for the edges. I've developed my own method and was surprised when someone talked about parity as I never have to deal with parity. But I'm sure I could do much quicker if I learned the parity algorithm and other aspects. Here is my edge method:
    First, just move any edge I see that has white in it to the center edges, aligned with the white face in the same direction so they can be sliced together. Once I have enough white faces, start finishing edges and moving them off, at the same time, start bringing in the yellow edges in the same way. This will eventually finish all 8 edges. Now, I realign the centers and start getting pairs of edge pieces on each edge by slicing on one end and then flipping them into position. Once all 4 last edges have 2 correct, I slice and rearrange edges until I can simply do a slice and fix all 4 edges. Unfortunately at this point, I often end with the centers offset and have to do a bit of commuting the edges into place.
    I feel really good about the first 8 edges, but think that I could use some of your methods to help with the final 4. (I currently solve in about 5 minutes each solve.)

  • @laiscube
    @laiscube Před 6 lety +135

    I use Yau 5 on 5x5 and 6x6. Edges are easier and cross is easier. 6x6 L4E is also very fun with Yau 5, but I would still recommend reduction for 6x6 unless you know specifically what your strengths and weaknesses are (basically if your lookahead during edges, and your 3x3 stage cross is worse than the rest of your solve). On 7x7 the middle bar is annoying and there are more slice moves, so Yau 5 is a bit harder.

    • @JPerm
      @JPerm  Před 6 lety +24

      I tried yau5 on 6x6 for a bit and I feel like it works, but even with my bad redux skills I'm still far better with redux

    • @laiscube
      @laiscube Před 6 lety +6

      For me I stagnated at 3:10 for very long with redux. Then I switched to Yau5 and managed to sub 2:50. Then I got the AoShi GTS M and went down to 2:37-2:38. For 5x5 I was using Yau even before I knew 3-2-3 and freeslicing existed and practiced the method for 2-3 years before picking up 6x6, probably why I was so much used to Yau than redux.

  • @nabranestwistypuzzler7019

    For basic reduction on any cube, insert the 1st 4 edges into the bottom so that you don’t have to look on the bottom after that to make lookahead a lot easier.

    • @averagejoey2000
      @averagejoey2000 Před 3 lety

      Isn't that the same thing as Yau? Starting with a partial cross to get all non white pieces on the sides and top row for easy search?

    • @nabranestwistypuzzler7019
      @nabranestwistypuzzler7019 Před 3 lety +1

      Joseph Simone I said to just put them into the bottom to get them out of the way, not actually specifically solve the ones for the cross, and even if you do, it’s still not Yau because for Yau, you solve & insert the first 3 edges before L4C & maybe also solve the 4th one and move it out of the way, and then you solve/insert the last cross edge upon finishing L4C.

    Have you ever given standard Yau a shot (aka not solving and inserting two adjacent "pairs" before L4E) and if so, what are your thoughts on that vs Yau5?

    • @JPerm
      @JPerm  Před 5 lety +4

      what I do now is only insert obvious pairs that are in the top layer already, sometimes just 1, usually 0. I prefer having more freedom to make yellow edges as well, and I think Yau is faster for most cases.
      one big problem about yau5 is if the f2l pairs are hard to make and you end up doing so many moves that now every slot includes a solved edge. in that case you have to do even more moves to put unsolved edges into the slots again.

    Is it wise to purposely swap two opposite cross pices then do m2 u2 m2 to fix cuz i dont see alot of speedcubers do this

    You should use an alternative flipping alg such as R' F R F' R U' R'

    How did you set up your wushuang? The outer layers on mine are smooth but tend to catch a lot while doing 3x3 stage which makes turning fast a big pain :(

    I use redux+yau+freeslice(solve all centers,then 4 cross edges,then solve all 8 edges using freeslice)

    What do you do if the edges solved for the f2l are across from each other

    • @JPerm
      @JPerm  Před 5 lety

      if the solved ones are BL and FR, do an R' move to store the FR pair away. then you can do edge pairing normally and then do R at the end to bring it back

    Hey, I noticed that your flip algorithm was R U R' F R' F' R and Chris Olson did make a video on this but there is another edge flip algorithm which is (R' F R F') (R U' R') I find this alg to be quicker and easier to finger trick.
