    I actually came up with a similar method for 4x4, after I learned Yau4 I didn't like 3-2-3 edge pairing because you have to look at the back, so I solved the back F2L pairs and did edge pairing with front slots

  • @bossatlife
    @bossatlife Před 6 lety +15

    You can solve the first 2 f2l pairs anywhere and if they are diag just do an L or R' (to put that pair into the back) then do last 4 edges

  • @laiscube

    Form the start of my 5x5 speedcubing I have been using a different method which I call Yau 4, (2 centres, 3 edges, 4 centres, last cross edge, freeslice 4 edges, last 4 edges, 4 F2Ls, OLL PLL), and reduction on 6x6+, but after giving Yau 5 a try earlier this year, I found that last 4 edges was incredibly strong. It's easy to be efficient because you can almost always achieve 2 purposes with every slice-insert-slice back. Eventually I switched to Yau 5 from 5x5-9x9, and my averages dropped significantly. How I do Yau 5 is slightly different. (2 centres, 3 edges, 4 centres, last cross edge, freeslice 4 edges including 2 F2L edges, 2 F2Ls, last 4 edges, 2F2Ls, OLL PLL)

    Interesting. I actually didn’t know about the last cross edge technique.
    From what I see, it seems that yau5 and redux seem equally effective for 5x5 - as you showed that the pros and cons really do go against each other. I think if you prefer systematic methods and can nail, yau is a better option. Well as if you prefer a more freestyle but more efficient approach, then redux is better. Personally I use redux, averaging around 55-56, primarily because I’ve trained myself on efficiency and look ahead from bigger cubes (where I think redux is definitely better). I do think yau is likely a better option for 3 and 4 solvers.

    I'm regretting that I haven't switched until now but oh well. I'm still not that good and it's tempting to go back to reduction to start getting sub 1:20 again. But I think that's why so many people were hesitant to switch to the new method because why try something new when you already know that WR's (Or in my case sub 1:00's) are possible. Great overview of the method.

  • @LevMaslov
    @LevMaslov Před 6 lety +4

    You can actually solve all the edges before doing f2l. Ciaran Beahan have some walkthrough solves with this method and he is the fastest. Also you can insert 3rd cross edge incorrectly, then do your centers and after that solve your last cross edge and insert it in the correct spot without messing up the centers. There are too many options!

    • @Muffins3001
      @Muffins3001 Před 6 lety +1

      Lev Maslov I've always solved my 3rd cross edge incorrectly. I find its way faster than solving it correctly. But I've been doing it for like 4-5 years. I definitely see why people do it correctly.

    • @cyotheking
      @cyotheking  Před 6 lety +4

      Yeah, people mention Ciaran a lot. From what I've heard, doing L4E his way is a lot more inefficient though. But right now it's just too early in the method to say which way is actually better.
      The incorrect cross edge is certainly another method, I just know that a lot of 4x4 solvers don't like that because of having more things to keep track of so I haven't tried it for 5x5. But who knows, maybe it's just because they aren't used to it. Lots of development still needs to happen. :)

    Has anybody ever tried this?

      @BrandonNunez Před 6 lety

      cardologist most people already know of this, but there is a lot of people saying it is less efficient, although I do the same at ciaran and I feel that it is both ergonomically better and more fluid, there might eventually be a point where this will be better. As of now the method is way to underdeveloped to know which is better

    When I got my first 4x4 I went straight to yau, no behinners. When I got my first 5x5 I didn't even look it up I just solved it like a 4x4, and I still haven't looked up a 5x5 tutorial. I just do opposite centers, then the 4 remaining centers (doing cross edges beforehand doesn't seem beneficial). After that I just solve the edges and then 3x3 stage. Is the way in the video more efficient than this?

    Hey, nice tutorial! I've been enjoying trying this new method but I have a question, how do you handle the last edge parity? Because doing the algoritm to fix that kinda ruins they f2l you had already done, so do you or anyone else in the comments have a tip for this or maybe an alternative algoritm?

    • @cyotheking
      @cyotheking  Před 6 lety

      Just try to force it so that it's a yellow edge that had parity. Then you can do it after OLL. If it ends up being an F2L edge, you can do F or F' to put it in the U layer, do parity then undo the setup move.

    • @cyotheking
      @cyotheking  Před 6 lety

      When you slice to pair an edge, the edge you put into replace the solved one needs to be correct for the other edge.
      I can't think of a great way to explain it in text. You're basically always solving 2 pieces instead of 1 at a time.

      Interesting. I feel like this is how I see most people approach it. Rob Yau does this as well.

      I don't like doing it simply because I already usually see really good centres after the first three and solving the last one before last centre would break them up. If you don't know how to solve it after centres efficiently, then you probably aren't doing it right. If you didn't know already, you have to do inserts such as U R2 U' R2 and U' F' R' F R to insert the last cross edge if you do it after centres to preserve them (since you freeslice the last cross edge)

      Yeah, I know how it works. I just haven't found I prefer it.
