Tension Run High While Icelanders Expect Volcanic Eruption Number 8 Any Day Now

- The level of uncertainty runs very high now although the MET office claims that we might have to wait a bit longer, but we will know the truth soon enough. First and foremost we hope that all infrastructure and the town it self will survive the next event but since we have already about 14 million cubic meters of magma ready to take off, my expectations are modest, most likely to safe my self from further disappointments since this journey hasn't been easy.

Thank you for visiting the Just Icelandic Channel.
Greetings from Iceland. Gylfi
'The geologists are like rock stars' - LOL! Different definition of "rock', in this instance.
👍
I chuckled when I heard that 😂
@JustIcelandic
Hi do you think the Volcano could erupt under The Blue Lagoon ?
Sure would like drone footage of that!

“Useful for perhaps 15 minutes” Your humour was noted! But most likely very accurate.
👍
Gylfi's dry sense of humor is well known and always appreciated.
Thank you for your great work and information! 5 geologists - 10 opinions.
I love your videos! No clickbait, no sensationalism, excellent footage and lots of informations, great sense of humour and just honesty.
Whatever decision about driving to the site or not will be accepted! You need some rest!
All the best to you from Germany!🙋🏼♀️
Gylfi, in my opinion you are the #1 Rock Star & real life Master of recording factual videos/ data for the history archives of your beloved Iceland. No guesswork is involved..just the facts as they appear through the eye of the camera or drone. Your dedication and journey are not unnoticed, sir.
I am in total agreement with you.... my lifelong philosophy to my children (as well as other people who are naysayer's) has been, "Where there's a will, there's a way!" 😉👍
Remember too.... "It is better to be safe than sorry!" Take care, sir 🙏😉
Always, always appreciate your perspective Gylfi. Your drone footage is absolutely amazing. Have a rest....im sure this isn't finished yet .
I don't think it's possible for me to take a rest until after this next event :) but I might take off to somewhere when that chapter is done, this has been a bit too much for me and my other plans :)
It's 3am here in Finland. I'm listening to your video..Iceland is not so far away, but it seems like you guys live on another planet. The ground beneath you moans and groans and spits out fire. I just can't imagine what that is like and what that does to a human being living on top of a volcano. Icelandic people must be tough. Thanks for letting us take a peak at the Icelandic living through your camera. Lets hope there will be happier days ahead ..Waving at you from Kalajoki 👋😊 Have a lovely Sunday!
Look at those colors! AMAZING
I wish I were able to travel. Iceland is calling out to me.❤
I will do my best to bring Iceland to you ❤
Thank you!
I've been to Iceland twice (2022 and 2023) and I fell completely in love with the country! The beauty and power of its nature is overwhelming and now I know I will come back more often, probably next year 😊 I was also in Grindavik and that makes me feel closer to everything that has happened these last few months and I watch your videos with great interest. Thank you very much for sharing such quality information with so many of us who follow this channel! 🙏
Thank you so much for your updates, I always enjoy hearing about the latest developments from you.
My pleasure!
You know, Gylfi, it might be handier for you if something a bit closer erupted. Krafla perhaps? 😄I kid!! Dear universe, leave Akureyri alone! Thanks for the update, Mr. Gylfason.
I'm actually going to Krafla soon :) will be all over the country this summer
Your life has been in such turmoil since the first eruption you covered in 2021, Gylfi. I'm so grateful for the time and energy you spend making the videos you do for your channel. They are highly informative and there is no sensationalism, just a dash of good humor mixed in :)
Please take care of yourself, and I wish you the best greetings from New England.
thanks for the update and video footage gylfi
best wishes to you and your countrymen
Many thanks!
Fingers crossed for everyone in the region and all the important infrastructure. Of course I'd love to see your footage from the next eruption, but please stay safe and don't stress yourself out too much!
Thanks :)
I hope everyone will stay safe. Thank you for the great update!
Enjoyed this report very much! You always explain things so well, while nature remains unpredictable. Thank you 🌋🔥🇺🇸
I guess if Prof. Armann keeps saying Eldvorp eventually at some point he'll be right. LOL. Love your videos and commentary as always. Thank You!!
Thank you for your info and explanations Gylfi. Your humor is also appreciated. Hopefully Blue Lagoon and the Power Station will escape any major damage. Be careful with your travels and look after your health. Kind Regards and Best wishes from NZ.
6:40 It’s not much of a wild goose chase if the geese are peacefully paddling on the water 😉
Your footage is like watching a movie and I can truly appreciate your efforts to explain things
Prayers to all of you in Iceland, every country has a challenge now and yours is this
On a lighter note, I couldn’t help smiling at your comment that geologists are being chased like rock star. I love your humour and also how calm you are.
Many thanks again ❤
It's quite incredible to see that the rate of inflation has still been continuing at the same consistent rate for the past 3 weeks, in fact since the activity at the vent decreased significantly and subsequently stopped, the rate of inflation increased ever so slightly
Geologists are like Rock Stars!!! That is a funny statement!!! Made me laugh!! Mother Nature is going to do what & were she wants the next eruption to be. Luv your commentary & videos. Very informative!!! Have a great weekend & a good. ❤❤❤❤❤
We wish and pray for best of your land. Nature has is owen way... your people and the guys who works all time for barrieses ,for water pipes, all this men and woman heros. They give all for others.
Wish you all after this long stressfull time a good beginning of spring, lots more of sunnshine .
THANK YOU FOR THE UPDATE 😊👍🙏>>>💚
Appreciated :)
Acrid sarcasm often helps us survive the impossible. Just rest a little. If you end up sick again we would be without our reliable source of all things Iceland. I would rather get a later report with verifiable research done than getting pictures first.
Not with sulfur dioxide you won't.
@@Tugela60 🤣
No doubt you hit it on the nail head in Iceland geologists are like rock stars 🤩. So I've been following a local geologist here in Idaho and that's how I came across watching your channel and Iceland was because of Prof. Shawn Wilsy. You do a great job with your video work thank you 🇺🇲
Easy to be a rock star in a country of 300k 😂
I often watch Prof. Willsey's live streams about Iceland. He even owns a T-Shirt with "Geologist - The other type of Rock Star" on it!
Imo Gylfi and Shawn are the best sources for information. Add Isak Finnbogason for drone lives.
@@susannap.8834I'd like to also ad ⚡Icelandic Explorer and Geolgy Hub
Beautiful, detailed footage but that opening was a stunner, Gylfi !!!
Was that morning or dusk golden yellow light? So nourishing either way.
Your zoom lens capability is our treasure.
The golden dusk :)
Thank you, Gylfi! Excellent coverage as usual. Many possibilities but only mother nature knows where and when! Best wishes!
Absolutely amazing photography! And fascinating commentary. I never want to miss a new one of your videos.
Thanks for your very thorough report. ♥️
Rockstar vulcanologists gave me a great image. Þhorvald (if I’m spelling that right) on base, of course. 😁
Good luck on the timing of your trip up and then back. Perhaps the next eruption is just waiting for you to leave. 😉
Thank you so much for your videos. I have followed you for a long time. I live in the US but doesn't the weather get foggier as you get towards the warmer seasons? My fear is that it will be a very foggy day when the next eruption happens. It might be very hard during those first hours to see where the lava is flowing. That could be bad for evacuations.
Hey we have all been wrong, from us Monday morning QBers, to the professionals to those drama queens and kings predicting an eruption right underneath the Blue Lagoon and boiled tourists (seems they are disappointed it didn't happen).
But what a time to be living in, to see the evolution of earth before our eyes, and the Mars landscape at the same, one looking very much like the other. Since the sixties we are the generations that have seen the most amazing advancements and some of the most worrying aspects of our continued further existence.
Yes we are witnessing something big here, often trough live cams, and this has just started
These area views are amazing! Knowing where everything is tecnically, from all the maps we've looked at and web-cams and drone footage etc, I still find myself understanding all the locations relative to each other SO much better when I see your footage. And it's beatiful aswell 💜
Thank you so much Gylfi for the update. Very informative and with beautiful drone footage. The boxes are so helpful, highlighting specific areas to help us understand exactly what you are telling us. Thank you from Florida in the U.S.😊
Glad it was helpful 😊
Thank you, sir! I am an old lady from the Netherlands, I have friends in Reykjavik and hope to visit again this summer. It's well to understand, the way you explain things. Some professors are telling things which make sense for them, but I am no expert.
Thank you and welcome back to Iceland 😊
Your videos show the beauty of Iceland, along with the powerful forces that build and change the landscape. Thanks so much for taking the time to capture these moments. And, again, its watch and wait for the next event.
Thanks for watching :)
Thank you for your thoughtful video. Between you and Shawn I’m learning lots of vulcanology. I think your records are a great gift for humans’ posterity. Please take care and be safe. I hope all the people who normally live in Grindavik stay safe . Greeting from South Australia. 🇦🇺 I send my prayers that everyone who are involved stay safe and well including you Gylfi.
Thanks again for your information and brilliant drone footage ❤
Thanks again!
I have been following your videos for about a year now, and I liked your style of reporting already from the beginning, but still I find that your contributions have improved significantly in the recent months. Your videos are even more relaxed in the tone, but still more to the point in what you tell us and the facts that you present, and also the footage and cut is much better now. Really professional.
Excellent informative spectacular fun and entertaining. Your footage and humour are always 'uplifting'. 😊
Thanks so much!
3 months ago, a scientist told Iceland news "all the magma" will move far away from Grindavik and never return again. Then the volcano blew up, and oozed lava directly towards Grindavik for 2 months straight. But hey, at least that entirely wrong scientist was famous for a day.
Who was this and could you provide a link or something? There have definitely been some predictions not turning out quite true, but right now I cannot recall anyone saying with certainty - as opposed to offering speculations - that the lava would not return.
By the way, unless your source was a direct, lengthy recording from that scientist, there is also quite a chance that media either pushed the guy to make something of a best guess which they could then "sell" as prediction, or simply selected the most prediction-like statement the person made.
I know these things to happen easily - an office mate of mine had researched a small feedback process on sea level rise (if more water enters the sea, the sea floor will be pushed down a little, which reduces sea level rise a little). The media were driving him crazy for at least a afternoon, trying to extract from him a statement like "sea level rise is all wrong". The poor guy kept and kept repeating: "NO!!! This is only a TINY effect!!! It does NOT mean that sea level rise won't happen!!"
Media love statements that are definite (rather than hedged with uncertainties) and new or controversial (one scientist says that all the rest always got it wrong) and tend to zoom in on these things unduly.
Thanks for your updates and coverage with your drone always look forward to hearing. I must say Iceland looks a beautiful country. All the best gylfi take care.
Thanks for watching!
thanks for the information helps me more to understand what is going on in the peninsula
Glad to help

Thank you, Gylfi, for all your hard work in bringing sensible, informative updates to us - and for your irrepressible sense of humour! I hope you're feeling better after your horrid 'flu - take care of yourself! Warm wishes as always. 😊
As usual your videos are great. However I can't help but have this feeling in my gut that what you have been experiencing over the last several month is just the minimal setting on the dial of what nature is about to bring.
Trees? There are no trees in Iceland, it was a dream!
Can’t wait to see the documentary when it’s finished.
Some great colours there Gylfi. Carry on.

Wow, thank you! I will do my best to show you my country and enjoy :)
Another excellent update on the situation on Reykjanes Peninsula. Takk fyryr Gylfi.
Always welcome 😊
Another superb video, Gylfi!
I am very excited to see the final documentary from all of this amazing footage you're getting!
Your hard work is definitely showing, and is greatly appreciated! Thank you! 😊
Another great video and discussion about the possible future paths for the magma and lava with humor sprinkled throughout.
One comment about the thermal imaging is that the sensor is measuring an apparent temperature and not necessarily the actual ground temperature. This means that different materials can have different apparent temperatures so black rocks might look different than surrounding moss-covered areas but be about the same temperature.
Been busy lately with our grandkids (at the end of school things) that are going on, so I got to this video a little late. Thanks for sharing your update and as always great information! 😊
I am always giving my husband updates on Iceland. Lol!
Good evening Gylfi,
Must be tiring for you this back and forth traveling but we’re very grateful for that.
I love the purple coloring of the drone footage; almost looks like Mars.
I heard something about the sinking of Grindavik. I hope for Iceland that isn’t true.
Keep safe and warm. Here today it was 27°C; about 7° too warm for the time of the year.
Iceland, stay safe💖.Greeting from Svitzerland
Welcome 😊
thank you for providing these details to us.
I will stay subscribed, you are the best! Im actually impressed with how quickly goverment acts in Island, but you know much more about facts. Im happy for this pause in eruptions, it scares me for all of you
Thank you very much for sticking around and always welcome :)
thanks for the update.
great pictures.
Thanks for watching!
Those first two minutes were awesome, beautiful!
Been wondering about the steam coming from that
area for weeks. Even recall spotting lava still coming
from the northern most vent in the distance but cams
never checked it out to confirm.
360° high drone footage is grand for the big picture.
Isn’t that barrier above the power plant the original one?
It was a long time in seeing it in perspective to the plant.
Scary situation if the lava heads in its direction.
Thanks for showing us the golf course. Yikes.
You’re appreciated so much!
Very many thanks again. The worst thing about the present situation must be the perpetual uncertainty.
Absolutely, and thanks for watching
Thank you for your photos and information. We appreciate what you do.
😂🙏🏻❤️ thx for your thoughts on this all! I really appreciate your perspective.
Welcome :)
It's difficult to know what to do and when to do it. You're the boss, you're doing a great job. Do what you love doing. Beautiful video.
I would enjoy seeing a partnership with someone in the future. You could do your thing at the editing table and someone/partner out with the drones feeding you footage to work with. If, that's the way you would want it of course. Always wishing you the best. Stay safe, see you next time. Thank you. Have a great weekend.
so appreciative of the coverage that your channel has given so far. Incredibly educational and encouraging my little home to foster a love for the land of fire and ice. All the best and thank you -
Great to hear 😊 and thank you
Thank you for another interesting video. Good information Gylfi...
My pleasure!
Igneous Rock Stars? Thanks, Gylfi.
I would think so yes 😊
Be safe🇨🇦
Thanks, will do :)
According to an interferogram figure dated May 9, the deformation is centered between Hagafell and Porbjörn (both seen at 3 min 30). At this location, lava can go either south or north.
It worries me how close call we can expect yet again. The lava barriers do only so much...
Best regards. Thank you for bringing us the information.
It's my pleasure
Hi Gylfi, amazing footage of the gasses escapign and sulfur deposits. The Graben golfcourse could be the next commercial think: Your handicap could change with any earthquake.
For the pipeline I guess the main thread is the pressure of the lava pushing anything in its way. In theory steel melts at higher temperatures as lava but I guess time will tell.
Very informative with great photography. Thanks, Gylfi
My pleasure!
You do great love what you do many thanks Allan
Thanks Allan 👍
Thanks for the thorough report, and as always, great video!
Thanks again!
Thanks for your excellent footage and commentary. I'm intrigued by forest planted on the lower slopes of Thorbjorn. Have you reported on this?
Is it perhaps technically, and physically possible to dig out deep ditches on the inside of the current berms, leading the magma the safest places to go, and to use the material they have dug out to make berms on the other side of the ditch? Sort of a river bank channel effect.
🙌🏼 Thank you, simply, Gylfi!

So nice of you😊
Whilst the uplift has reached levels where we have seen eruptions, we just had an open vent allowing the pressure to gently dissipate. I think there will be a couple of more weeks of uplift before it gets near the pressure required to pop the cork again.
Thank you Gylfi!🌟❤️
Thanks for the update, Gylfi.
Good to hear from you. Enjoy your time at home.
Best regards from 🇨🇦Canada.
Thanks 👍
Thanks again Gylfi. Your narration is great just like your footage. Edutainment at it's finest. 🙂
I keep in mind, chunks of contenent _might_ spin(coriolis) just like large weatherpatterns do. That is in addition to any slip and/or seperation at the plate edges. (Similar to Juan DeFucha plate on North American continental west coast(Washington state))
I saw "Useful For 15 minutes" open for "Earth Wind and Fire" at the Roxy in 1982.
It is not 10% but just over 8% of the population that would be at risk of loss of power. Anyway, so much for the cold statistics. Again, thank you for another beutiful video and your wonderful humour👍😁
Thanks for the info! and always welcome 👍
Many thks again for this summary. Was just, my yesterday night ,talking with a friend about using thermal drones cam to detect more precisely possible fissures in zones of inflation. Not sure it would be possible or accurate though. Thanks again
Eruption could start at any moment. I know you just came from a long tour, but if you want footage of the eruption, especially from near the start, I'd head back as soon as you can. Maybe take some camping gear along?
If the mid-atlantic ridge has separated slightly then the next eruption could be north east or south west (or both???). There was a earthqauke storm a few kms off shore last week and I was wondering if we were getting a new volcanic island. Part of me thinks that our "Rock stars" should be adding some more seismometers on the penisula and trying to get a 3d map of the underground systems using quakes and their echoes. Might take some of the guesswork out of it.
As iv'e mentioned before, I'm not the expert but when you mention 3D mapping I'm extremely surprised if all available technology hasn't been used already because again and again we see we didn't learn anything from the previous events.
@@JustIcelandic If it hasnt been used then it will be due to lack of money. Some years ago, El Hiero in the Canary Islands was having some wild volcanic activity (undersea eruption just off shore) and the Spanish authorities had a very interesting 3D map of where all the quakes had occurred. It was very easy to make out where the magma chambers were, which was feeding which and where some of the potential routes to the surface might be happening. I just havent seen an equivalent for the Reykjanes peninsular.
Darn, so sad
Is it spring, yet? Or do people need central heat year round in Iceland?
It's spring, but it's still cold so we need the heat
Thank you for the great filming and information.
Top man
Thank you 😎😎😎👍👍👍
My pleasure!
This area of iceland is slowly but surly...becoming super volcano ish it has all the signs now
If lava floods the steam pipe... why not flood it with cold water instead of steam to carry away the heat?
That project would require some infrastructure, waste gates and input manifolds, but such a system would cool overtopping lava enough (if it's deep enough) to make a solid stone shield around the pipeline.
yeah the build up of lava underneath is concerning...so much down there.....could the eruption be massive?...hard to say...
Is that your car on the ridge at 1min35sec mark? Seems like a great place to set up.
3:15 What's to stop lava from erupting again at the fissure south of the defence wall, like it did on 14 January? That alone would be enough for me to no longer feel safe remaining in Grindavik.
Is there any questioning in Iceland about the location of the power plant, or would that be too harsh with benefit of hindsight?
This is a good question but at the time it was built, the peninsula had been dormant for almost 800 years so this wasn't considered to be a threat, although it was clear it would wake up again. What bothers me is however how they situated the main facilities in a depression, thats the main mistake, and the land there still sinking there due to the usage of the water under there. They could have done a better job, there are hills nearby and all it took was a bit longer pipelines so this could have been prevented
@@JustIcelandicVery interesting, thank you. Hopefully it will remain safe. And I hope the next eruption will be polite enough to fit in with your schedule so we can benefit again from your fantastic footage!
@@JustIcelandic If I'm not mistaken, Þorvaldur Þorðarson said a while ago that these powerplants earn back the investment within 10 years or so. In that sense, having to build a new one after about 10 years is not even too bad financially - so to some extent they can just take some risks of loosing the plants - but of course what does give huge problems is if a power plant is taken down by lava or whatever without a replacement having built yet!
Gylfi, any info about how those green trees to the right of the power plant came to be? 🤔
People in Grindavik planted them a long time ago :)
@@JustIcelandic Thank you. :)
Rob Tasker posted that the Blue Lagoon was evacuated again today. What an unusual outcropping of trees that I saw there. Nothing is permanent, except change.
No such information in the Icelandic media today
@@JustIcelandic interesting...perhaps I was watching one of his previous 'shorts'. Sorry to mislead anyone.
I wonder about the sense of not having the wall built over the roadways with a ramp on each side for the traffic to use rather than hoping they can close the gap in time when the next eruption happens, but what do I know, I'm not an engineer.
❤
How did they route energy before the geothermal plant was build?
You can probably write off Grindavík, this village is lost...
The east part of it might be but we remain hopeful until it's no reason to do so.
