Hi Renso, it's a pleasure watching your video. It is always loaded with wealth of knowledge. Here is what I picked up in this 15 min video...
Prefer palette color the same as the canvas so the mixed color ends up looking the same on the canvas when applied.
Start with two values -a light and a dark value to differentiate light and shadow. Gradually build mid tones in between them.
More focus on values than matching colors at the beginning of the painting. It's OK to match the colors exactly to the subject from the beginning but you prefer to start off relaxed and change the colors as you go.
Use artistic license to enhance the image e.g., applying green to eyes. It is an advantage when doing an alla prima painting.
Apply highlights to see the likeness with the subject. As you are copying from a subject, ALWAYS pay attention to get the proportions and hence the likeness
Keep the entire image at the same level of the process so you are not distracted with the details of one particular part of the subject. Always watch the whole of the image together.
Apply more impastel/thick paint to the lights and transparent paint to the shadows - pure yellow and white for highlights in the Iris
Pupil is the strongest dark in the subject/whole painting - go with pure black.
Generally lights are warmer , shadows are cooler - hence introduced blues in the chest area.
Always keep harmony between the background and the subject. So bring/pull some colors from the subject to the background.
Feel free to make changes but ensure the focal point is maintained so the eye is always drawn to it - here the face.. and paint loose all around
Within the face, draw attention to the eyes by bringing in contrast by applying pure black
You can achieve more contrast by applying more saturated color or by contrast between values.
Thank you Renso. Have a great day!

This is a wonderful painting and your advice is very helpful. Do you use turps or mineral spririts to thin your paint? Thank you!
