Learn how to paint your cat's portrait with oil paints in this step by step painting tutorial with me,
Suzanne Barrett Justis . Follow along as I paint this gorgeous Siamese cat. Watch as I paint her incredible blue eyes and create life like fur.
Most of the brushes I am using are Rosemary and Co Brushes. Here it the link to the their website www.rosemaryan...?u=5711a7
as well as links to the actual brushes I was using
for whiskers (when I don't cut them in by removing paint) I love the Ivory Dagger and sword brushes here is the link for the daggers
www.rosemaryan...
The Domed Eclipse Filbert I was using can be found on this link....it's a wonderful little brush, great for both application and blending.
www.rosemaryan...
the pure red sable in the 81 series was used for blending . I wanted to give you the link to this brush in case you are interested in getting one for yourself

I also used several of the Eclipse long Filberts of various sizes, you can find them here

and Ivory long filberts, my " work horse brush" I love them.

This piece was inspired by all the feral cats living in my neighborhood and I wanted to create awareness to the responsibility of all pet owners to have our pets spayed and neutered . I will be taking part of the proceeds of the sale of this piece to go to one of our local "No Kill" animal shelters.

Great painting! Too bad there is not a way to use all the leftover paint. Challange do a quick small painting only using your left over paint! I love the left eye of the cat the most. It is purrfect.
Ha ha ha DL…I feel ya. I often use left over paint in my classes I teach. Just this morning, I grabbed some cerulean blue off an old pallet and put it on my students palette. Ha ha. I hate wasting. I like your idea of doing a challenge using up the paint from another paintings palette….I may just do that!!! Stay tuned !!! Thanks for watching.
@@SuzanneBarrettJustisArtist am going to start painting and ur videos helps me to paint
Million thanks

So glad to hear it! Happy Painting !!
My eldest cat passed away last night. Through the tears I've decided to try to memorialize him with oils. I normally stay with landscapes so this will need my first attempt at a portrait. Thank you for the guidance and inspiration.
DXGypsy oooohhh. I am so sorry for your loss. I know that pain. I am glad this video inspired you and I am sure your painting will honor your late cat and that you will find peace and comfort in the painting process. Good luck with the painting and message me if you run into any problems. I am sure you will do great. Again, my condolences. 🙏🏻💕
She is beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you and thanks so much for watching !
❤ thank you so much for your sharing how to create realistic paintings!
Wish you all the best. I hope God will help to find loving hands and warm houses for all these kittens and cats 🙏🙏🙏
thanks so much! thanks for watching and thank you too, for caring about these kittens and cats.
I was involved animal rescue for dogs, but mostly cats. After a few years, I had to reduce the hands on time I spent working to find homes, pull animals from kill shelters, find foster homes, and rehab neglected animals. It was just simply heartbreaking.
Thank you for bringing attention to the feral cat problem. So many people are unaware of how quickly cat population grows, and many areas do have organizations to help spay & neuter ferals. Many counties all over the U.S. have TNR programs, where the cats are trapped, fixed, then released back into their environment...and it has made an enormous difference in these areas at reducing populations. I do continue to trap ferals and take them to our local SPCA. They fix them at a very responsible cost, and I release them back where they came from. Maybe you could look into that if you’re still concerned about your backyard kitties❤️
Anyway, I love your painting! I paint with acrylics, but recently started playing with oils. I love it, but I have a long way to go...how in the world do you layer like that??!! Amazing! I think I’ll head over to your Patreon page 😊
Oh Wow Alyce, first thank you for your help with Feral cats. It breaks my heart to see so many animals left out on their own like this. I have also done work with out area no kill shelters, mainly helping with their fundraisers, but I understand all that occurs with these animals and I am always grateful for folks like you who are willing to help. When the cats are captured, vaccinated and neutered....they have their ear tips on one ear snipped off so they are easily identified if captured again as a neutered cat.
Thanks to for watching me here on CZcams and for becoming my newest Patreon patron. I got your email about the video and I will get that fixed for you. Seems I have a copy right issue due to the music I was playing I will
Get that fixed soon. Thanks gain so much snd I will see you on Patreon!!!
I have worked with strays and ferals. Strays pretty easy to catch, but you can catch ferals in a trap and at least take them to get spyed and neutered (as weoll as treated for worms/fleas). Some places like the spay alliance have programs for free or low cost spay/neuter for ferals
Tbh i really can t stand to watched the cats running and playing along the side of the busy streets and i just can t stop thinking if they got hit by a car or get kick by a heartless human jeez , anyway nice art ! I love it ! I m gonna try it now ! Wish me luck ! and thanks for the tutorial i really adored the siamese cat !
Thanks for watching Fasya. Yes. All the feral cats make me sad too. The kittens you saw in the beginning of the video were in my back yard. The mother cat had them safe from traffic, but they will always be at risk. People need to be responsible and have their pets spayed and neutered. Good luck with the painting! Can’t wait to hear how you did!!
Black edges and arm resting are incredible. İ Love the piece
Thank you so much. Cats (big and small) are always fun to paint

This is beautiful, i recently started oil painting, it has its challenges. I appreciate you sharing this.
Hi Priya, I started out in watercolors, switched to acrylic and then landed in Oils. There was a brief adjustment between each media, but I have to say that oils are, by far, my favorite medium. Thanks for watching and I hope my videos help.
This is so perfect in every way=especially the eyes and the front paw. Thank you!
Thank you so much Dave! I am glad you enjoyed the video.

This is fantastic thank you for making this!
Thank you so much for watching. I am glad you found it helpful
Hi suzanne, actually you can catch the cats, borrow a cage from your local veterinarian and put either tuna or mackerel in a little dish inside as each one goes in you'll catch them one at a time. And you take each one over to the vet. That's how we do it here.

Thank you so much Martin. Merci beaucoup 🌞🙏🏻😃
Thank you for your sharing! So great to learn from the tutorial video but It is better to show how you mix the colour at the same time.
Thanks Ann. I’m glad you enjoyed the video and even better, if you learned something too!!! I tend to mix my colors on the fly.
You are so good!!
Awe. Jen, thanks. You know this piece was a ball to do. I will include the full length instructional video of this on Patreon as soon as I “work the bugs out”

so cute! Well done, it looks beautiful! :)
Thanks so much Cecilia. Cats are fun ro paint ...I especially enjoy the eyes. Thanks foe checking in 💕
@@SuzanneBarrettJustisArtist Yes, I totally agree. I also love to paint the fluffy fur :)
U started your car the same way I did....I saw a few people saying to do the eyes first . .
Thanks for watching Marge. Yes. I generally block the entire piece in before I do the eyes. What if I did some incredible eyes but messed up on the rest of proportions? Then I would have to move and change everything. I save the fun detail when all the appropriate blocking in is complete. Does that make sense? Thanks again and happy painting.
Can you share your inspiration photo? I love your rendering! Looks just like my cat.
Hi Susan. I wish I could share my reference but it wasn’t my photo reference. I had permission to use it but not share it. I’m sorry. I try and share my references when I can. So you had a Siamese cat? I think they are gorgeous.
I was hoping you would share what colors you're putting on the face as you go?
Paint scrapper..got it
Yes. The paint scraper is amazing !!!! Makes the best whiskers and great for signing names
What's the size of that dagger brush? Thank you. Awesome job.
Hi Dona Ella, thanks for watching and I used a 1/4 inch Ivory Dagger by Rosemary and co. I will include the link here if you want to get one just like it.

Hi Suzanne
Yeh me too I have four kittens including their mom in my backyard they are healthy I do my best to feed them and they have small house protect them from bad weather
Am trying to paint with canvas but am bad at it and what kind of canvas u painting is it flat canvas? it looks smooth
Hi Lovingwithart! Thanks for watching and commenting ! I painted this one on a gessoed smooth Masonite panel. Super smooth. I love painting on a smooth surface ! This one was painted in just a few hours so I used a more direct method of painting. I hope that helps. Thanks again for your support and I hope you subscribe to my Channel
Beautiful work. What exactly is that Paint Scraper tool you used? Is that a wooden point? Please advise and thank you!
Hi Den and thanks for watching. The paint scraper is called the Wipe Out Tool by Creative Mark. It’s a little rubber tipped tool. I love it. You can get them from Jerry’s Artarama. I leave the the link in the description. Hope that helps .
@@SuzanneBarrettJustisArtist thank you. Love your work and concern for animals.
@@denmorris8384 and thank YOU!
I need dager brush too...im i right dager brush?.
Hi Yod, and thanks for watching. The Dagger Brushes I like are the Rosemary and Co ivory daggers. They have them in 3 sizes and I use all three. In this painting, I used the smaller one. I believe it’s the 1/4 inch. You may also want to check out their sword brushes….like the dagger but with a longer hair. I hope that helps. Happy painting.
What kind of brush did you use for the individual hairs ?
I generally use a dagger brush. They are awesome for the little short hairs and a sword for longer hairs….like whiskers
Hey, I was wondering that what exactly is the material you use to make the cat's whiskers?
Şehrinur Demirel hi !!! I actually scraped the paint off with a paint scraper.
So there were no whiskers painted on. They were scarped off. If you are interested ...you can go to my Patreon page...become a patron and watch the full length, fully narrated version of this painting. It will take you feom start to finish Thanks so much for watching
3:00 OMG how many brushes do you have??
I have TONS of brushes but I also have my favorites. I have been known to complete a whole piece using one good brush.
There are groups out there that maybe able to help you. Or with your permission will trap them on your property for trap/neuter/release program.
Thanks Evelyn, yes, since this video, the feral cat population seems to have leveled out. Thanks so much for watching and for your advice
which exact dagger brush are you using ? i wanna get one like that !
Hi Azura, I use the 1/4 Rosemary Ivory Dagger....from Rosemary and company. Makes great whiskers !! Hope that helps
Patreon link is not working
I am sorry Kathy, I will look into it. I seems to be working on this end.
