- How can you see and mix more accurate color when oil painting alla prima?
Quick note: I know my camera is doing an annoying autofocus thing. Sadly I can't fix it for this video, but don't worry, on all my upcoming footage I have the camera on the left side so it won't refocus all the time or get blocked by my arm. :)

Hey chelsea! One piece of advice when recording these type of videos!! Lock the painting with the lense on auto focus, and then switch it to manual focus to avoid the repetitive focus onto your hand! I saw you fixing the focus every time it went away 😅. Other than that, amazing video! Thanks for the tips!
oh i thought she did that on purpose. so you have an idea of what it's like to see your object through your eyelashes. Which helped you with blocking in the shades
The painting is beautiful thank you for the explanation!!
Another great video with great advice! It would be really helpful if you showed the photo you are using in the corner of the screen as you paint... a picture of your palette would also be great! Thanks very much for your insights!
I use fresco to color check…
Thank you for you insight, I listen to your videos as I work… They keep me motivated, knowing I’m gonna paint when I get home.
This is such a cute and pretty cat. At first, it seems to focus on impressions, but at some point, it becomes very specific and detailed.
Plus a nice explanation. I can learn the process of moving to detailed description step by step. Thanks for sharing a really nice video.
I hope you are always healthy and happy.
Fabulous painting and your discussion on whites, color matching, and practicing with paint chips from the hardware store are all excellent! If your kitten is as sweet as you paint her, you've got a goddess 🥰🥰Cheryl
I find your advice to push color of reflected light works for not just white objects but anything that is light in value. I was painting some bright yellow roses alla prima en plein air and the desaturated purples in the shadows were what have the painting a sense of realism. Great tip!
An excellent video (and a BEAUTIFUL painting!), Chelsea!!!! Thanks for making it. I'm passing it on to our students at the Angel Academy of Art, Florence.
Love your demo's and explanations!
Another amazing video full of great lessons. The painting is beautiful!
Definitely in the top five of educational, very well-narrated and talented! Love your style and appreciate all of your expert advice.
This was a great video, such a beautiful piece of art and thank you for all the helpful info and tips on colour
Wow 🤩 sooo beautiful. Your brushwork awesome 👏. Thanks for working with white and showing your expertise!!
Breathtaking!
This painting is easy to apply. Especially useful for beginners.. ❤️❤️🎨🎨👍🏽
Beautifully done.
Your work is alive.
That's my favorite traditional painting technique. Thank you!
I love listening to you talk Chealsea. You seem to say all the things I say in my head and I wonder how you heard me.
Accurate colours is something I always struggle with, thank you so so much for those preciouses tips!!
(Not me pretending I don't look at the brush and at the screen of my phone to check the colour out)
Loved the audio n visual content; thanks.💐👏
Beautiful ❤️
Fantastic,its really impressive work
Absolutely Beautiful! Thanks for this. I am actually painting my white cat in my Art Class! This helps me so much.
Так красиво! Супер!
Fav
great painting video,
Seeing you taking off a hair of the recent varnished painting made me feel home 😂 it happens to me in all my paintings (dog/cat owners, who allow them at the studio, know what I am talking about)
So cute canvas😍
SWEEET KITTY
It looks so great and it's so fascinating to see, how th piece comes together with all the different shades. May I ask what part was the actual titanium white? Maybe I missed it, but I was wondering till the end. My guess was the highlights on the edges of the ears ^^'
You are simply amazing ! I just wish I could be in your presence & learn from you every step of the way. I’d be a better artist!
Lots of very important information here. Thank you so much. 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thanks for this!
Would love to see more sub-surface scattering on the ears as they feel a little solid. Also the ambient occlusion edge of the cat's chin can be pushed even darker to give a more 3 dimensional effect.
Woooow amazing video my friend 🐈🐈👍👌🙏🙏🙏🙋🙋🙋🙋
How soon can youvarnish and what type of varnish and how quickly does it dry. Do you add any demar varnish into the painting mixture? Love the work!
Nice cat. Nice eyes.
I agree with this 100%
nice work! by the way what varnish did you use?
I like your paintings and have been following your channel for a long time. Now I want to learn to draw portraits by following your videos. After watching some of your videos, it feels like you didn't do it all at once, can you mark the time and reason when you pause in the middle, so that I can learn more easily. Also the final varnish, how long after you finished the painting? I read that it would take at least half a year or even a year.
Amazing to watch this!! How long was the wait to apply the varnish for this piece?
Depends on how thick or fat you applied paint. Thicker and fatter brushmarks take longer to dry completely and vice versa. It’s recommended to wait for at least 6 months before applying any varnish, except retouch varnish, you can apply it once the painting is dry to touch. Also I believe Gamblin’s Gamvar can be applied without requirement of waiting so long but I haven’t try it before, I think it has similar properties to retouch varnish so it can be a good alternative if you don’t want to wait for 6 months. I normally wait a year before varnishing them though, better safe than sorry
How do you mount the canvas board to your easel like that? 🤔
Where did you get the shaped canvas?

Your videos are great. But, they would be a lot better if you took your camera out of auto focus.
Why does the footage blue and come back so many times. It’s extremely distracting.
Could you do not change the focus of the cam? the focus switch between your hand and the canvas from time to time. I really like your painting and explanation, but the focus of the cam makes my eye very tired.
Your autofocus killed my eyes 😵
