It's great to see a Conan 2d20 review in 2022, considering this system has been around for a while. It is an amazing system that works amazingly to tell pulp stories and most of the published material is top notch. Thank you for the review I appreciate your POV as a Conan fan

If you enjoyed the details in Conan 2d20 character creation, you should check out one of their other 2d20 games - Mutant Chronicles 3rd edition. That thing has a lifepath char-gen that puts all others to shame. Their Conan char-gen was cut down from what it was in MC3. The wide range of options, and especially the life events as you build up a character's history, are impressive. It's like Traveller's lifepath system on steroids.

Honestly I was sad support for this game dropped. I definitely agree that a huge issue is how powerful the players are. To fix this, you should always play using the shadows of the past alternative rules in the core book. This makes characters more in line with normal heroes and then the system works tremendously!

Excellent comment. Excellent suggestion. My group has enjoyed using the Year Zero Forbidden Lands engine, but this is an equally viable option if 2d20 is not your thing.

Damn, I found your channel yesterday and binged basically all your videos. Very sad to see that the most recent is 7 months old. I hope you get back to the channel because I really love the style. The low technical quality add charm to it, it almost feels like listening to a friend or peer about something we are both interested.

Well thank you sir. I am still here and alive. In the charm consistent with my channel and life, we lost our dog, my oldest is getting ready for college, and I am in the last sprint of my career. And just like a marathon, it is INDEED a sprint. I have a lot on my to do list: Blade Runner, Transformers, Root RPG, and a couple Kick starter board games... all awaiting review! I promise after I retire I will go full time on this channel. Until then, as Bilbo would say, "I can only do my best." Thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment!

I'm planning on running a Bronze Age/Greek Myth settings next year. My group's played plenty of Year Zero Engine games, so was leaning towards adapting forbidden lands. This sounds really promising though!

You could easily run a bronze age campaign in Hyborea. Argos and Corinthia are very Greco-Roman culturally. Shem (based on ancient Arabia) and Koth (Byzantium) have very bronze age, almost biblical feel. And Stygia is an ancient Egyptian like culture rooted in black magic, worshipping the serpent God Set.

Fantastic review and quite timely: after introducing some of my group to a Star Trek Adventures one shot, I picked up a bunch of Conan on the back of this review.

I'm a huge Conan fan as well and I've had my eyes on this rpg for some time, probably since it has been announced, but after looking up the system and watching some reviews I found the system really confusing. But it never really left my list of games and wanted to try. And now the Bland review hit my feed and here I am again thinking about giving a shot :D

As someone who is not a fan of 2d20, my advice is to buy it. The game is well worth it as source books if you choose to try another ruleset. I am VERY biased when it comes to Free League, but the Forbidden Lands rules were an extremely easy conversion.

@@blandgaming6222 So here I am again five months later, after reading about Modiphius losing the licence for Conan I went all in bought all the books that were still available and I'm not regreting my decision, because you were right, the books are worth all the money just for the lore itself. But I'm gonna do it a justice and hunt all the remaining missing books, because I need the collection complete :D

@@Valior86 I'm so glad to hear you like it as much as I do. As source books alone, they are beyond excellent. I'm currently running a Conan campaign using the lore from the books with the Forbidden Lands rules. We had to do some tweaking to the spellcasting, and I often have to convert Conan monsters to FL templates, but so far it is working swimmingly. I too am hunting down the last of the books to complete my collection. I need only the Shadow of the Sorcerer to complete my collection.

I have a problem getting the Hyborian Horrors and Ancient Ruins books, seems like no other shop has them anymore or had them for some time, my only option is to import them from the US Modiphius store. Then it's the Kull of Atlantis, which is not that necessary, but I would't mind having it, Monolith and Age of Conan books I can live without as I don't find them that crucial or own the Conan board game. And the DM screen and kit is impossible.
To be honest I'm surprised I've managed to get all the other from just one semi-local RPG store in the UK

As always a nice review. I like the conversational tone of your videos. It's simple yet to great effect.
I like a lot the Conan Universe but I've been sitting on the fence because Im not convinced at all by the 2d20 system, I may jump into it because of Dune but since Ive got Coriolis bouncing around ... I recently got Forbidden Lands (won't deny your channel influenced on that decision) and I'd love to see your notes for converting Conan to FL.
One last point I wanted to make is that I get your issue with political correctness but it's not true that when Conan was written "there wasn't political correctness". Maybe the concept didn't but there were certainly social cues and mores that people at the time were "sensible to".
Anyways, great vid and waiting on the next one!

I would encourage you to give 2d20 a try. It is very popular, and by changing the system, you lose a lot of detail in the character creation process. However, using the Year Zero system from Forbidden Lands was very easy. Our characters picked an archetype from the Conan books. We then tried to decide which archetype from FL was the most similar. We then decided where the character was from, and was their history was. From there, we chose a kin talent that fit. The only kin talent we did not use was the elven one. If we had a problem making it one fit, we could always just fall back on the human kin talent. The more challenging move was converting the magic system. My current group has a shaman from Nordheim, so we used the druidic animal magic as a guide. We also took some spells out of the Conan book and made direct conversions. Lastly, converting the monsters from the Conan setting to FL rules is easy, but somewhat laborious. Some monsters, such as giants, can be used straight out of the books. The simplicity of the Year Zero system is allowing us to really make it up as we go. Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching!

Yeah, as I said, Dune might be the game that finally turns me over to 2d20 and then I'll see if I make the jump to Conan. The other reason is that I've still got Mongoose's d20 Conan around to scratch that itch

    • @blandgaming6222
      @blandgaming6222  Před 2 lety +1

@@mariodosantos I have heard good things about the Mongoose product, but for its lore alone, Conan 2d20 is the best RPG supplement for the world of Hyborea. As far as Dune, I will tell you that Dune is my favorite book, and I am very pleased with Villeneuve's vision. Although I liked the Dune 2d20 RPG, it felt incomplete to me as is. Also, I have not run it yet because me and my group are distracted by Coriolis. If Conan were released with the MYZ engine, I would say it would be my favorite RPG. It is certainly my favorite fantasy setting. However, the rules, setting, story, and execution of Coriolis elevate it to my favorite right now. And that is my issue with Dune. Coriolis has everything that Dune has, and more. (Except of course, the license.) Indeed the last leg of our Coriolis campaign took place on Dabaran and was heavily and shamelessly influenced by Dune. ;)
