I used to have the ring binder compendium. I really miss the 2e monster compendium. I put the pages in page sleeves to protect them better. Actually I liked 1e and 2e the best of all the D&D editions and basically left for other systems, primarily the Palladium/Rifts megaverse which found that stopping while they were ahead with 2e and just adding new rift worlds using the same core rules made more sense. WotC scorched the pooch by constantly reinventing the whole system. It got too confusing imho

Yeah I bought one of the ring binders recently and it’s overflowing. I prefer the black label revised edition though cuz that’s the one I grew up with. Plus it had Tony DiTerlizzi’s art in it. Thank you for watching.

It's weird to me that they would do a loose leaf monster book then do two monsters per page.
No one caught the problem with that?

I felt like during this time they came up with certain gimmicks that was expensive but not well thought out. The audio CD was another. So was Dragon Dice, a collectable dice game when they were trying to compete with Magic: The Gathering.

@@Dndditches well I know DC Comics did their Who's Who books that way around that time and the entries were one character per page (except for team entries) and actually they were one page of art and the back was all the text and other artwork.
I think Marvel did one too but I don't know anything about how that was laid out.
The CD thing sounds cool. I forgot about that but I've seen modern games offering MP3s.

@@LibraGamesUnlimitedI don’t know about the comics but I remember they had the educational stuff which had a monthly subscription and vol 1 was the binder and subsequent volumes were loose leaf. They were on topics like ancient Egypt or mineralogy. The loose leaf format was quite popular at the time.
The CD format sounds good on paper but were expensive to produce. I talked about it a little in my Planescape boxset vid (Outlands box) that they had very little budget left over for the product. Ended up getting a 32 page book with half of it being regurgitated info. There are 2 other CD sets I know, Mystara and Red Steel. It did not make good financial sense for a business that was already struggling.

@@Dndditches yeah I saw those even got one or two. Yeah it was a fad at the time. Both DC and Marvel Comics did it.
I googled the Marvel ones and they were weird. They were all done sideways and the front was an image of the character from the front, back and side on a blank background.

How many of the products did you find in Aus? I had to go through drive thrurpg to find most of mine.

The first big box, Al-Qadim, the box with the 3.5 and 4e book, Planescape novel and Spelljammer boxset were all from aus. Got really lucky this month.
You just gotta keep checking ebay because they pop up from time to time. And local Facebook marketplace.

Out of curiosity, how much money did you pay? Prices on these have skyrocketed in the past 5 years. I'd need at least half of my paycheck to buy these in Greece

    • @Dndditches
      @Dndditches  Před měsícem +2

Far too much. All prices in $AUD unless stated
Chaos $172 (a steal at that price honestly).
      Hellbound $342
      Al-qadim $120 each
      Belfry $120
      Nightmare lands 100GBP
      The box with Spacefarers $250
      Astromundi $220
      Psionic artifacts $100usd
I did say I need professional help lol

@@Dndditches Yeap, thats a full salary for me:D You'd buy them cheaper in Greece though, about 50- 60% of what you paid but i hear Australia is very expensive when it comes to hobbies (Warhammer also is expensive) probably cause of shipment costs. These days i only buy from DrivethruRPG unless i stumble into a bargain and that rarely happens anymore. Anyways, i feel your need to collect these, just try not to ruin your wallet:D
PS: Let's hope youtube doesn't delete this again...

@@user-mp2fb9ku5oyeah I don’t fault anyone from getting print on demand or digital copies because the prices are outrageous. But all the little nicknacks from the boxset can only be experienced with the original. I didn’t want to spend that much but sometimes rare things pop up and if I don’t get it immediately someone else will. Australia is expensive because shipping costs an arm and a leg but that’s life.

@@Dndditches Yea, last year i found the 1st edition boxset of Ravenloft complete. I was amazed to find a transparent hexgrid slide that you can superimpose on maps to measure distances. I guess you can't find that on Drivethrurpg. The whole thing also cost 80euro as well. Bought it and the Undermountain box set for another 70euro in the bliink of an eye lol
