    It's weird to me that they would do a loose leaf monster book then do two monsters per page. No one caught the problem with that?

    • @Dndditches
      @Dndditches Před 14 dny

      I felt like during this time they came up with certain gimmicks that was expensive but not well thought out. The audio CD was another. So was Dragon Dice, a collectable dice game when they were trying to compete with Magic: The Gathering.

      @@Dndditches well I know DC Comics did their Who's Who books that way around that time and the entries were one character per page (except for team entries) and actually they were one page of art and the back was all the text and other artwork. I think Marvel did one too but I don't know anything about how that was laid out. The CD thing sounds cool. I forgot about that but I've seen modern games offering MP3s.

      @@LibraGamesUnlimitedI don’t know about the comics but I remember they had the educational stuff which had a monthly subscription and vol 1 was the binder and subsequent volumes were loose leaf. They were on topics like ancient Egypt or mineralogy. The loose leaf format was quite popular at the time. The CD format sounds good on paper but were expensive to produce. I talked about it a little in my Planescape boxset vid (Outlands box) that they had very little budget left over for the product. Ended up getting a 32 page book with half of it being regurgitated info. There are 2 other CD sets I know, Mystara and Red Steel. It did not make good financial sense for a business that was already struggling.

      @@Dndditches yeah I saw those even got one or two. Yeah it was a fad at the time. Both DC and Marvel Comics did it. I googled the Marvel ones and they were weird. They were all done sideways and the front was an image of the character from the front, back and side on a blank background.

      @@user-mp2fb9ku5oyeah I don’t fault anyone from getting print on demand or digital copies because the prices are outrageous. But all the little nicknacks from the boxset can only be experienced with the original. I didn’t want to spend that much but sometimes rare things pop up and if I don’t get it immediately someone else will. Australia is expensive because shipping costs an arm and a leg but that’s life.

    I used to have the ring binder compendium. I really miss the 2e monster compendium. I put the pages in page sleeves to protect them better. Actually I liked 1e and 2e the best of all the D&D editions and basically left for other systems, primarily the Palladium/Rifts megaverse which found that stopping while they were ahead with 2e and just adding new rift worlds using the same core rules made more sense. WotC scorched the pooch by constantly reinventing the whole system. It got too confusing imho

      @@Dndditches I'd almost reached a point where I was no longer playing; when I actually (read rarely) did get to play it was 1st ed. & usually a one-shot. The DM of the new group lent me the DM's Guide & let me use the custom class creator &, despite going in blind, I thought that was one of the greatest things ever. When I found I could get from anywhere to anywhere using the planes I was tickled & it changed how I approached the game as a DM. I still use the Great Ring when DM'ing. If you want to acquire something, if you know the right people, pretty much anything can be purchased if you have the jink. My first character (Mist) is still alive & a property-owner in Sigil. Her brothel/tavern/gambling hall (The Misty Tie) is now used regularly in campaigns. The Tie (as locals call it) is located conveniently in the Lower Ward. Look for the two trees bracketing the entrance. Mist is probably the longest-played & richest character I have ever played, although her power-level makes her pretty much an NPC at this point. The group was full of power-gamers (& a power-DM) & was so over-the-top that a couple of times people sat in with our group & later told us they had trouble playing in other groups, calling the other groups, "...less than...". As an edit/addendum, I discovered Planescape: Torment shortly after hooking up with this group. Good times.
