  • Travelling to Italy? Many of you have asked for more videos to help you learn beginner Italian, either for when you vacation in Italy or if you're studying the language to one day move to Italy, so here are some easy phrases and a few unusual tips I used when I first moved to Italy. If you're new to my channel, I have lived in Italy for about 10 years - in Rome, Florence and Positano on the Amalfi Coast and travelled all throughout Italy, working as a travel TV presenter, filmmaker and travel journalist.
Don't forget to follow me over on Instagram for daily inspiration from Italy (mostly!) to make you dream, learn a language, cook, travel, move to a foreign country, film, edit or pursue your passion:

Good evening everyone. First of all, I offer my warmest congratulations to Kylie for her excellent Italian and I thank her for all the love and respect with which she expresses herself when talking about my beloved country. Having said that, since I have seen that we talk about Italian terms and the differences between masculine and feminine and singular and plural, allow me a small addition since it is a small mistake that I often see foreigners who speak little or are learning to speak Italian make. . In Italian, we have some words that can deceive those who are not native speakers; in fact, in the singular they are masculine, but in the plural they pass to the feminine! here is an example: Il CARCERE (jail/prison) in the singular it is masculine, but in the plural it becomes feminine- LE CARCERI-. Here are a couple of examples: (conversation between friends):” Marco mi puoi ripetere in quale CARCERE lavori come guardia?”. M:“Certo! Il CARCERE di Trieste” ("Marco, can you tell me in which prison do you work as a guard?". M:"Sure! The Trieste’s prison (called “Coroneo”). Now as you can see here the noun is singular and therefore it is masculine, but if we now make it plural, this happens: (newspaper headline):” Per motivo di sicurezza i colpevoli verranno trasferiti verso LE PRIGIONI di Venezia e Padova”( "For security reasons, the guilty men will be transferred to the prisons of Venice and Padua").
as you can see now the noun has changed from the feminine to the plural. Another word that behaves like this in Italian is "GREGGE" (flock) singular: "IL GREGGE"-the flock- (masculine) Plural: "LE GREGGI" - the flocks- (feminine).
I hope I have been helpful in explaining these little tricks of our beautiful language. I realize they may seem difficult, but to become fluent in Italian it is good to know them. You will not regret the time it takes to learn them! ☺️ Having said that again thanks a lot to Kylei and a good "In bocca al lupo" (Good luck)to all those who are learning Italian! ☺️✌🏻

I was 100% expecting a straightforward video on idioms (I know, how dared I underestimate Kylie?!) and was SO pleasantly surprised by this warm, beautiful instructional video full of welcoming energy that really transports you to one of those personal connections.
I found myself trying to explain your videos the other day and I butchered it because I could not even begin to explain the energy and emotion your videos provoke in me. Eventually I just stopped trying, sent them a link "Just watch it. You'll understand what I mean"

People usually are a bit when one
      speaks more than one language.
Kylie said if one is not a mother
speaker, one is never as fluent as
      them. This is true.

    • @Parso77
      @Parso77 Před 3 lety +3

There’s a lot of comment here about “not really fluent” - I would actually use the term “natively proficient”. You will never speak Italian like a native if you weren’t born and brought up there, but fluency is a reasonable objective and of course you can always get better (as you can in your native language). So I would say you are obviously fluent.
You also raise an interesting point about “cadence”. Every language has its own rhythm and its own character. Italian is syllable timed (so stressed syllables are the same length as other syllables, unlike in Germanic languages such as English) and pronounced further forward in the mouth (as is typical of Southern Europe versus Northern). English-speaking learners are never taught this, so invariably end up sounding blatantly Anglo-Saxon even if their Italian is technically quite proficient. I find this yet another aspect of language teaching which fails abjectly - much better to be self-taught like you are!

It is my all time dream to learn it, maybe next year I will have time because I have passed my french language exam. This video was very nice, I just came home from spending due settimane a Napoli, Roma, Costiera Amalfitana... and it was very lovely to experience authentic Italy just because my parents spoke Italian to the locals. It really opens up masaive boundaries it's incredible! Please make more italian videos, I would love to see and learn more!!!

Planning an extended visit, what ever visa will allow. After my artist residency in Venice was cancelled for 2020, when we do get to resume the program, hopefully April 2022, I plan to make it an extended stay. Strangely and surprisingly after watching these, I was so hooked that I have watched by now nearly all of your videos...So che sono un po 'pazzo ! ... LOL ...and of course subscribed.
Initially, I could not figure out what actually attracted me watching your videos... "ovviamente sei una donna molto bella "....however it was actually your sincere and amazing personality that struck me. I realized that your videos are so refreshingly different from the many others out there. They are special, passionate, artistic and have that very unique personal touch. It is like a collection of little artistic masterpieces !
Watching your videos about Italy and the Provence "cooking series" has brought back beautiful memories (spent quite some time living in Bella Italia and the Provence) and I would to thank you very much for that !
Please keep on producing more content and remember NEVER give up on your dreams ! You are very special and an amazing person !
BTW, with your talent, have you ever considered providing photography and/or video/film-making courses ?
    Cheers, Mike

Good morning Mike, thank you for such a thoughtful and kind response to my work. It really makes such a difference and motivates me to keep going when this whole world of CZcams, which rewards quantity over quality, can often be very tiring, exasperating and soul-crushing . THANK YOU!

I speak Italian quite well now (as you said, perhaps an adult learner doesn’t become completely fluent). I just watched this video for your aesthetics more than the phrases. It’s good that you went beyond the usual “buongiorno” “buonasera” “grazie” “prego” that can be found in other videos 🤓❤️

According to Alondra thanks - yes, you know how it is: some days you feel completely fluent and other days you think, I should push myself to improve and learn grammar like passato remoto better. 🙈

“Io sono in pensione”. I love to travel to Italy and to keep my “little grey cells” active. What you do with your iItalian blog is quite excellent. I have been through Duolingo and also have used Pimsleur. Your presentations make me feel that one day I might be able to converse with the locals in Italy. Your lessons are quite entertaining and artistic. I really appreciate the lessons that deal with common phrases that a tourist would hear. Could you do a session on common idioms? Richard in the US
