  • Welcome back to my series on how to move to Italy and the cost of living in Italian cities and towns, such as Rome and Florence. In Part 1 I looked at finding an apartment and the cost of accommodation. In Part 2 I discussed weekly grocery shopping and food costs. In this episode I share with you advice for monthly costs as an expat - expenses such aa phone, wifi, eating out, weekend trips, etc. You can find many more videos on my channel about how I learned Italian and moved to Italy. Making these episodes alone is very time consuming and expensive and if you would like to support my work, you can find my Patreon page here:

OMG, I can sooooooo relate when you talk about the costs of going out with friends! This is years ago now, but I used to hate that I ate something simple, no drinks, but still had to pay for a (for me, considering) gigantic bill divided up evenly. And I was upset not because I was strapped for cash, but because I didn’t think it fair to have to pay for something I didn’t consume. And nobody gave it a second thought. Now that may make me a scrooge (which I don’t think I am), if yes, so be it.

When I was 16 my uncle was stationed in Italy and flew me out for Christmas break , at the time I didn’t know I had a toxic mental abuser of a boyfriend .. he called everyday of my trip to tell me how much of a shitty gf I was for leaving the country and enjoying my self while he had to stay back in the u.s ... I tried so hard to enjoy that trip and really embrace everything .. I fell in love with Italy but couldn’t really enjoy it the way I should’ve .. looking back at it now as a adult I had a once in a life time experience as a 16 year old American and I let a dumb boy ruin it 🥴 seeing your videos help me remember things on the trip I may have forgotten because I was too sad. Now I can not wait to take my amazing husband to Italy who is also military😆 and change my whole experience ❤️✨

It's of course challenging, but in a way there's a blue-print for it, I knew I could get an apartment/cell phone/health insurance sorted eventually, but I really struggled building a social life from scratch, and I appreciate how open you've been with your experience. As Corsicans we do not want to be slaves nor "rebels" and as Italians we have the right to be treated like all the other Italian brothers.... Either we'll be free or we'll be nothing.... Thank you so much for this series. I am old enough to be your mother but still find your experience so inspiring. I am at a point in life where, for so many years now, it's as if I have no life; I'm not even living. I spent two weeks in rural Southern Italy house-hunting in 2018 and have been obsessed with moving there and creating a new beautiful life ever since. For me, my biggest fear is being older and not having - or knowing how - to create an independent online source of income. Your videos are so lovely and you are such a charming, beautiful, and gentle soul. I once wanted to be a writer, and wrote poetry. I've lost all the things I once loved: literature, poetry, flowers, nature, books, art; all of these have been lost to an endless grind of soul-sucking meaningless work, crime and endless wildfire smoke, traffic and worse, here in California. I actually hate it here so much! Anyway, you remind me of a younger version of myself, when I was full of dreams and hope. All the best to you, Kylie.

Hi Kylie! I NEVER comment under any CZcams videos, but I've been watching your videos and following you on Instagram for such a long time, and you deserve all the love and support for your beautiful and gentle and honest content! I lived in Florence for a few months last year before I headed to college, and I still think of Florence as I think of an old lover (longingly)... I was wondering if you could talk to us a bit about socializing in Italy? How did you find friends after you arrived? I feel like it's a challenge for expats not to stay in the 'foreigner-circles', so I was curious about your experiences with that. Thank you so much for your hard work and beautiful art Kylie, it is so appreciated!

Morghan Welt Hello dear Morghan, thank you for taking the time to comment. It’s sometimes hard dealing with hate and negative comments so I really appreciate your effort to support me with such kind words. I will certainly make a video about this topic. I have mentioned it a little in some of the videos I made a few years ago that you should be able to find under the How To Move To Italy Playlist. 😘

Hi Morghan, as an Italian who used to live in the UK (meaning, fluent in English and happy to stay in touch with non-Italians as often as I can), I'm so pleased by your approach and your desire to reach out to Italians! I live in Rome and know quite a few expat groups who are very open to Italians joining in, resulting in very heterogeneous groups. Quite a few romances have resulting from this, too - between the expats and Italians.

Really enjoyed this film and yes it would be good to know how to 'blend in' clothes wise Italian style - I always wear too much black! Keep safe and hope you are well and happy x

Kylie Flavell I also wanted to know if you have any idea about the hairstylist there and what kind of licensing they need? I’m not sure if you would know that but I’ve been considering doing hair in Italy 🇮🇹 thank you for all the great information you give in your videos.

Beautytrends77 I don’t know anything about licensing and stuff. But do know that most stylists in small towns only know one basic thing for long hair and thats cutting it a straight line. They do an absolutely wonderful job but I think if you don’t have any ‘conpetition’ you could be a big hit. Especially with the ‘older’ ladies they most of the time get their hair done almost every week.

Kylie, love your efforts you are comprehensive. Most of all you teach that if you want something badly enough, you teach how to go after what you want in life. That it can be done and here’s what it will take. You seem to live a charmed life ...but not without major effort, that if can be had. Most of this comes from from knowing oneself and then you provide the know how. You’re an inspiration...
On a side note, have you given any though to, if it is not to much hassle to helping students learning Italian for you to sub-title in Italian as you speak. I follow you on CZcams and Instagram. You are a beautiful individual and I hope you reach all your goals...Gene
