In this hard surface modeling tutorial, I break down the process of creating complex panel detail in Maya 2018. I share my techniques for creating hard surface models with clean geometry.
In this video you'll learn how to use instances, manipulate transform pivots, create clean edgeflow, detach components and more.
These techniques can be used most 3D packages, including Blender, Modo and 3D Studio Max.

Great tutorial, thanks for that but could you use another color for your object or edge because green on light grey is hurting eyes (at least my eyes) ?

do u know tool circulize? select multiple polygons hold shift + right mouse and there is that in the menu. That will make a perfect circle edges from polygon group

I was aware of the tool, however I created this tutorial in 2017 and it was not available.

Thanks for the tutorial. Hardened edges are crucial in the firearm models, am I right? So you need to crease, extrude and bevel all the time to make high quality model.

Clean panel lines are important for any hard surface model especially if you want to be able to view it close. This is one method of doing panel lines, it could also be sculpted in a package like zbrush or created in subtance painter, then converted to a normal map.

If you go to edit>duplicate special> and create an instance. As long as you select the components, you the instances will follow.

Thanks for the content. After I reset subcomponent pivot for some selected edges to scale and even up my edge flow, I cant get my transform tool zero in individually selected subcomponents after the fact. I tried to delete history and reset transformations, no joy. Any sugjestos?
