Rare Footage: Bernard Hopkins trains at Graterford Prison

  • In July of 1993, we filmed Bernard Hopkins returning to Graterford Prison. At one-time, Hopkins was an inmate at Graterford and began his boxing career there. To stay grounded and never forget where he came from, Hopkins often returned to the prison and trained. This footage was 17 months before he challenged Roy Jones Jr. for the middleweight title (and lost) and 2.5 years before he actually won the title. #bernardhopkins #prison #graterford #bhop #philadelphia #philly #phillyfighter #boxing #rare #rarefootage

      Being an apologist for Whïtë racism and çøøñëry he will never be a great. He deliberately said some rubbish leading up to his fixed fight with Joe Calzaghe. The man is a dimwit who just does not get or understand the real picture. He throws his entire group under the bus for personal recognition and rewards.

      Stacked against him? He committed armed robbery and landed in prison. He "defied the odds" by not committing another armed robbery when he got out. Like 99% of people manage to do. Give me a fucking break with this shit.

      It's amazing, he started late but he STILL became a master technician. Usually, a master technician starts as a kid. Bernard Hopkins is the most underrated fighter since Archie Moore. As far as pure boxers go, this man had one of the highest ring IQs I ever saw. A master trap setter. A master tactician. People thought it was boring, but I was completely captivated watching him pick and chose his spots, ultimately dictating the terms of the fight.Only the most pure of boxing fans appreciate him.

    1st...and an outstanding video. They have stopped so many programs in these prisons through the years it's ridiculous. There is no rehabilitation or even the chance to better yourself. They have even taken away the ability to get a college degree. The only thing you can do is take some bullshit vocational class or just sit and rot. Give these guys a real shot at being productive citizens

      Jail is not to rehabilitate. Jail is punitive.
      They owe us nothing. It has to be made up in the mental to not go to the Penal ever again. When the program's were funded cats didn't go to them. Prevention is what we need to learn. That my Brother starts in the house with Dad and Mom.

    In some respects "Prizefighting" can be a great leveller in Society(Sure u just have the causal fans, but look who's seated in the Audience at the Big fights!)
    So whether any of these Guys proves to be any good is neither here nor there!.
    If the Boxing Training helps them to handle their sentence better, teaches them discipline,(which might be translated to mainstream Society) then that's success&and that's going the f##king 12 Rnds&anyone who does that has my respect..
    And as for Bernard Hopkins, his life has been amazing..
    Many an time he has frustrated fans with some of his antics, but i remember seeing him fight for the undisputed Middle Title against the Great Felix Trinidad &I watched that on a Big Screen in Vegas(I think it was at the Mirage?)
    &,it was a fantastic fight at the Gdn,NYC,just after 9/11..A great night!

    I said it before, and I'll say it again: Judge it by primes and peaks, and Jones is better than Hopkins. Judge it by longevity and there's no comparison. Hopkins was twice the oldest man in history to win a significant title. Consistent, consecutive defenses of his belt, and all this after having a lung collapsed by a knife, several years in Graterford Penitentiary, the death of his brother, and losing his debut match. Better than Floyd or Toney, too. The only fighter of that era in the same legendary category is maybe Pacquiao.

    • @kakonis
      @kakonis Před 2 lety +1

      @Chosen O1E Floyd played the game better than any boxer, in terms of his business acumen. He (by his own admission) never even unified a single division. He's great, and probably one of the three best of all-time in terms of the "hit and don't get hit sweet science" (after Pernell) but he's not "TBE." That's just part of his marketing brand. Even he doesn't really believe it. If you believe it, then that means his marketing worked, because you bought what he was selling. B-Hop had twenty consecutive defenses in a row, in one of the original eight glamour divisions. That's five less than Joe Louis. He was beating world champions when he was 45. Floyd in his early forties was fighting MMA fighters and a kickboxer (with a clause that the kickboxer couldn't even use his feet).

      @Chosen O1E Floyd looked not great against Pacquiao, he was the only man stunned in that ring and the one who got hit the hardest, iirc. So I don't think it's fair to hold him above Pacquiao.
      James toney might be better, idk.
