- John Holmes as a number of electric bikes in his collection of hobbies. Being drawn to the electrical side of anything, John likes to experience and of course tinker in the electronics of anything he rides or drives. In this video, he digs into the controller of his DYU V1 E-bike. First up, this will void the warranty, but this is what it will do. It will take that pokey feel of the e-bike and give it a bit more torque. More torque equals a much more fun ride! John will show you what tools and materials you need, how to take the controller apart, how to solder on your shunt mod and reassemble the controller. While it didn't pan out well on this bike (caused cutouts), other bikes may benefit from this hack.

Just a heads up, this mod caused cutouts on this model and we didn't get more speed. Had to use a higher voltage battery and higher quality controller to get more torque and speed, as seen here
czcams.com/video/e5R1OeG7FCk/video.html
Shunt mod worked great on my MX01 and MX02s controllers which are the same.
I did the shunt mod on my 1000w speed controller and I modded it too much. According to my BMS it was drawing up to 4000w and the motor would do this funny thing where it felt like it was almost dragging a brake when punching it full while going slow. I actually had to reverse the mod and put it back to stock.
Could we see a video for the s2
Hey can i mod citycoco harley x7 controler ? thanks !
@@TMAX48 Still working?
Just want to help others from frying their controller if they try this mod... the wire used to decrease the shunt resistance needs to be MUCH smaller than what was used in this video. The wire will need to be 22-24awg, or smaller, depending on its length. A recent controller I modified used an SMD shunt resistor (similar to this video) of 2 mohms (that's 0.002 ohms). A 22awg piece of copper wire that was 1.5" long had an equivalent resistance, so adding that across the SMD gives an effective resistance of 1 mohm. Torque was dramatically increased and the controller gets warmer than it did prior, but not hot. Voltage drop, while accelerating, has increased as a result, which is my guess as to why the OP was experiencing cutouts after their mod (BMS shutting down due to too high current demand).
@daveoxide so Dave i did this shunt mod by soldering an exact surface mount resistor to the existing one, there are actually 2 but I started with one. When I connected controller to bike an " unknown error code" came up on display. Luckily I had a replacement controller. Any suggestions?
Thank you sir for the infomative well done how to vids, I don't want a 80 MPH bike but to get across the street quick. or out of the way. just a few seconds to safety makes all the difference between a bad day and a good one. AGAIN THANK YOU
i think we may be seeing the progression to making some sweet e bike motors here
"Was that a good noise?!" Lmmfao! I love those moments.
Just did this to my brothers Jetson Bolt Pro, just used a tiny dab of solder though. Seems to work great so far. Before at his weight he was doing 12-13mph, now its cruising at 17mph. I'll probably build him a better battery using P42a cells for it soon.
did u controller burn?
REALLY WORKED FOR JETSON BOLT PRO. THANK YOU! Same top speed but tons more torque. Will wheelie if you lean back a little so be careful.
Is your bike still working?

Really digging seeing more electric stuff like this in addition to the rc side.
We use to do this on video cards for more overclocking room. We would just color the shunt with a grafite pencil from one end to the other.
Colour the shunt? Would that work with this? Or very minimal difference?
@@leepatterson4009 Its just a matter of shorting it out, graphite is conductive enough to do it. Especially on a graphics card. But i would still sauder copper or a silicone wire on, if it's for an EV for the reliability.
Nice. Have you considered hooking the V1 controller up to the D1 bike to see if it provides better performance? Can't wait to see the next mod.
I was wondering this too since the v1 controller is rated 350watt on it( v1 weird 400watt???) But the d1 Controller is rated for 500watt...
You have coolest watch man! 👌

Hello there! Is it safe to put copper wire on/ shunt and remove speed limiter at the same time? Thanks!
Hi, grate video. Just a quick question, method to my madness if I use a thin bit of wire 0.3 26awg/ 0.5 22awg copper wire or a thicker bit of wire 1.5 18awg/2.0 16awg copper wire. Would the thinner bit of wire let less amps or less currant through will only do a little bit more top speed/acceleration, as a thicker bit of wire will allow more amps or current to flow through giving more power to motor for more top speed/acceleration am I right in thinking that or am I wrong?????🤔🤔🤔👍👍👍👌👌👌👌👊👊👊
Thanks. Made me laugh. We have the same tinker talk lol.
Have controller issue putting ne controller after one ride only one speed like 20kmh usually 3speed working fine and then breaks something.what I need to look in controller to fix any idea.thanks for informative video.
Can a 48v kelly controller be hop up to 60v? Lmk thanks for replies.
Can you use super capacitor to boost current? I have tried but nothing happened. Please help
Great video, thanks ! It would be possible to do this shunt mod on a KCQ-EMC7939 controller, taken from Aprilia esr2 e-scooter, which is already programmed with 3 speed settings (5/20/25 kmh ) ? Would increase speed or torque? Thank you
How did you get the spring steel that holds the components against the case

What are the cap sizes,I have a 36v razor controller and want to put a 48v battery in.Will I fry it or are the caps 63v?
hello. to increase the speed what needs to be changed? the mosfets?
I've also done this modifications. But sadly It took only one ride. In the end my controller mosfets got smoked and shorted my battery. Thankfully there was a fuse in my battery. :)

I think I will shunt mod my Jetson Bolt Pro if you're familiar with it do you know if this mod will work for the Jetson? It's almost exactly like your little DYU bike. I might have questions for you later. That being said I will subscribe!
I bought a cheap 350w controller for until my 60a one gets here lol. Hopefully this helps if its gutless.
Where's your video regarding the upgrade control box for the Jetson Bolt electric bike?

Shunt mods are fun. :D
I just got a juiced hyper scorpion is there any way to get a little more speed out of it I'm doing 31.5 mph would like to get around 35 ish thanks
Hi there do you have tune up idea for dyu d3?
One thing I found with these controllers is that the heat dissipation is normally bad, I often after testing it first pull them apart and put in some better heat sink past it seems to make a huge difference as you get better cooling.
Does the heat paste go between the heatsink and case?
@@marthamryglod291 I put some on both sides so you end up with a sandwich so the heat can travel directly to the body which doubles up as the heat sink.
They often use a sheet and grease but where they put grease use a good paste it's better than the grease.
@@flitsies thank you!
I keep the sheet by the way in place, and that is sandwiched so it travels through the past through the sheet then through the past to the metal body.
But the grease is removed.
did this on my Ecosmart Razor, didnt change max speed but to climb a hill and on the acceleration is much better
i did this mod, i went from 60amp to 97amps. it lasted maybe 20 miles. it actually died on me going super slow up a slight hill. i was going intentionally slow about 6mph, to watch the amp load from two different meters. at the time it stopped working i was using 10-30 amps average about 15 amps. it was a dirt trail that was a tad muddy, but i was not spinning the tire. all of a sudden it went limp. no popping sound, no smoke, but then again it appears to be sealed.
that was a long walk out of those trails/hills all the way back to pavement with what felt like an engaged brake. i had to drag that thing home another 3 miles once i got back to pavement.once i got home i unplugged the motor and it began to spin freely...uhg
i opened the controller up and found two destroyed mosfets. i ordered the replacements and just before i installed them i inspected the controller board very carefully and found many things were destroyed. almost looks like random traces underneath some layers of the pcb were fried and brown looking.
if i do this again, i will be very careful to only put a tiny amount, these two weeks waiting on my TWO new controllers this time of year sucks as i know the days are very limited at this point this time of year
Low-speed asks more of the mosfets. 30 amps at 10% throttle is 300 amps in the fets, and most to220 bodies can't handle more than 100 to 120a before they start to thermally run away.
my e bike wheel spins but won't carry any one after changing the back wheel no power lost a clip to the disk brake any ideas everything turns on lights an no answer from seller
@@HolmesHobbies are there MOSFET upgrades available? Like stuff the biggest/best ones in the controller before shunt modding. I don't know much. Just what I've read and watched. The goal for me would be to modify the controller to a point where it's still reliable, fixing the weak links.
@@growingmj2865if you lift ur back wheel off the ground, turn throttle and ur wheel spins but u can't put a load (person) on the ebike, u misplaced a tiny little piece u need. It's called a keystock and it's like a clinch pin for the rotor + stator.
ebik wheel will spin, but planetary gears aren't. ...this is where ur keystock comes into play. Hope this helps.

The shunt mods that I did and confirmed with a (Kyoritsu )dc clamp meter is that the mod just makes the current metering on the controller go out of calibration,It does not change bias or make more current flow through the mosfets. The on resistance of the mosfets on most controllers from source to drain is in the milli ohms. And the shunt is in series with that,Your current to the motor is limited by the Battery BMS,Wire diameter from battery to the controller and controller to the motor and the cross sectional area of the traces on the circuit board at the mosfets source and drain.

Is it safe for a 500watt hub motor to be powered by a 48v 14ah battery and a 28 amp controller without it burning out or is that too much??
I would do it. A big hill could spell trouble for overheating. Your biggest concern will be wind resistance at top speed. If under 25mph, should be no worries.

Hi I have Lehe K2 scooter that is giving me problems with the remote controls I have two both remotes occasionally work after a long time I have replaced with new button batteries but still getting problems Is there any way I can override the remote control and just switch on at the battery then press the start button on the Speedo face When I press the remote start button there is three positions at the bottom is start then alarm then unlock lock at the top The scooter makes a distorted noise when you switch the battery switch on then you are supposed to press the start button at the bottom of the remote then press a button on the speedo face It then says we are searching then connected if it’s set up on a mobile but this is not working maybe after about 20 goes it might 😡
Thanks from England for info. Could you answer a question please. 4×12v7ah lead acid batteries don't move my bike, can you tell me a solution, and when I say won't move, I mean if you press a finger on the bike it can't move, and I'm stumped. It worked on 36v?
You mentioned that you can do this to any controller, so why did yours break? I'm questioning rather I should do mine now lol. It's a DYU/Jetson Bolt Pro
Do you know if running a 36v battery and 36v rated controller on a 48v hub is legit? Like, will I ever run into any type of issues?
You should t have any issues. You just won’t be getting the full speed it’s capable of.

Hi my controller has 2 R005, 5 miliohm smd shunt resistors. What is the best way to mod them as the max amps being produced by the controller is only 8 amps and the fets are rated for 25 amps please?
What did you do in the end mate, I saw your video and that is some increased torque you have now, did you have any trouble with the display not being accurate after?
@@amagnu100 I bridged the 2 resistors with wire links in parallel, i.e. bypassed them. Bike still working fine except when the bike is fully charged and you try to take off in full power, i.e. PAS 5 the display and power cuts out. So I only take off in PAS 3 and then if I go to PAS 5 when moving and all is ok. Bike is still working great and way more fun to ride especially on take off and climbing hills.
Someone else I know just shorted out one of the resistors and still got loads more torque and acceleration, so I might try that on my MX02s as the frame vibrates with the extra power on takeoff.
these cheap controllers are so much more reliable than a standard RC ESC (par example) brcause they have a form of current limiting.
Increasing that (slow*) current limit to infinity is really stupid because:
- if a fet dies in the h-bridge, you fry the cables, motor and endanger the battery. If the battery gas a poor short protection you're in for fireworks too.
- the shunt is only monitoring the overall, slow, current fluctuations, not the fast and spiky per phase currents that can be 10x the average general current. Even the cheap controllers monitor and limit the fast currents with a bemf discriminatory logic or an actuall copper trace shunt on each phase.
So, completely removing that fire protection is really stupid.
Yes, decrease the shunt value, maybe, to get a little more umph,.. but not to damn zero.
I actually prefer to increase the shunt value for less peak battery draw.
Would you say using a resistor in parallel would be better? If the current is small on this part of the controller and the voltage drop is all that matters a small resistor should do right?
can i also change my capacito from 63V to 100v?after this shunt mod
Once the voltage of the capacitors is above the voltage of your battery when fully charged then there is no need to change them. The electrolytic capacitors also have a temperature rating so if the controller is getting much hotter after the mod it is worth upgrading them to the higher temperature operating ones and 100V ones too.
I believe the s2 means the steel rating. S2 tool steel is some decent stuff
@HolmesHobbies did it work for you? I did it on mine controller (different e-scooter) and it didn't take any effect. Still has the same top speed as before.
can you do this in reverse, like making a 30amp controller to an 11amp controller?
No need to do this, if you motor is only 11A rated then it will not pull more amps from the controller. No matter if the controller is 11A, 25A, 50A etc.
@@ulliu.3200 thats not true wtf
It works great for my cheap 350watt controller. But i'm gonna put a switch on it becous my headlight doesn't work as good anymore
How's the battery consumption? does it make the battery pack fast-draining after the mod? I need some answers/feedback, please. haha.
:) That's how you don't do this! This will smoke up in no time. Try with a little bit of solder on one end of the shunt and don't go over 20% increase....
What do you mean?
My controller was gone in less than 20 seconds, i had bridge the shunt with copper wire and it seems that was a very bad idea.
You didn't say whether the controller was for a brush motor or brushless motor
why to rebridge more the shunt if u could bridge the negative on the boards otherside? Just bridge there a wire of thickness of your feeling. Its more easy.

I can't do this mod, cause Juiced Bikes thought it would be hilarious to pot their ECUs with epoxy. Ugh!
That’s to keep it cool…
@@Gunjaroo Actually, it's mainly to keep people out so they cant modify it. Secondly, potting keeps moisture out, which is always a companies official reason to pot electronics of any kind. Airflow via fans or natural air movement would keep the ecu cooler than epoxy potting it, hence the new vents Juiced now has in the RCS's downtube.
like most pcs of junk Chinese made products you dont need to worry about voiding there fake warranties any way considering their warranties are usually bit even worth the paper they are printed on when they dont and wont honer any warranty without making some one spend way more money or time to even try and get them to honer any of there fake warranties.
