- In case you missed it, John recently added the DYU D1 12" folding electric bike to his “collection.” The bike has seen a number of rides so far and it’s time for a little change. Nothing can just stay stock at the Holmes Hobbies House and John has taken on the project of swapping out the Controller in the DYU D1 for something that will give the bike some more torque. Swapping out a controller isn’t an easy task. There is a lot of behind the scenes tech to consider and in this video John talked about Tips and Tech that can help you in your quest to upgrade your electric bike controller. I bought a 48v controller and battery and hooked it up with all the wire colors matching and it ran but very rough and high amp draw. I didn’t have the guts to start trying different combinations until I saw you video! Kudos!

Thankyou very much for the vid. Im looking to upgrade my controller for my unusually looking stock one which is only giving me 25kmph. Im at a loss when it comes to turning signal indicators, brake lights etc. With your regular alixpress controllers can you wire up the turning signals?

Awesome video to your question i don't know if your hack pushes up against the speed limit kind of set for non moped ebikes but i think the manufactures should set their max speed right up against it
Have the Jetson bolt. Close to same bike. I’m at the weight limit. Had an overheat on slight incline on the way home. I’m interested in all upgrades lol.
Can you point out a good controller that will get me by for a few weeks until I plan for a full upgrade?
Also like the 2 motor idea. Was tossing around an experimental idea of upgraded gear hub motor in rear for take off and hills and a gear less hub for front. Kind of like 2 speed with a switch to pick which motor to run and use the same throttle with separate controllers. You can take off with high torque then switch over to the gear less and pull good speed shutting off rear motor and let the freewheel do its thing and be pulled along. Any thoughts? I’m new to this but ideas inspired by what I read about the different type of motors.

Hello. nice video. I just receive two controlers from outside they are exactly the same. two different brands, one brand say 350W the other says 400 to 500W, and this ones are more expensive. how i know they are only changing the labels so persons just pay more?
Hello, this video earned my sub. I have both Bolts and on the Pro which has no bluetooth connection I took the BT module from the reg Bolt and it easily connected to the Pro. From there I used an old version of the Ride Jetson app (6.2.7) and maxed the top speed to 18.6 instead of how it arrived being governed at 15.5mph. What is the next step to change the max speed by using the app? Or is it not able to be done?
Secondly, if you did install a 72v battery, if the rider only used the throttle at 50% max, would that equate to double the range? And wouldn't a 72v battery be incompatible with a 36v motor. I'm obv still learning the basic with V A and Wt. But I think you would know these.... Thanks and I appreciate any answers you give in advance

My current ebike has a 250W motor running on 36V 10.4ah battery with 36v 13A stock controller. Can i switch the controller with 36v 20A controller to get more torque?

Switching to a 72v battery you’ll Definetly need a new controller but I think the motor is still good to go

What would be the outcome of you exchange the stock 10.4ah 36v battery for a larger 48v battery pack, still using stock 250w motor and controller?
Would it be like using standard AA 1200 batteries in a camera (drains faster) then changing them to the AA 2300 high power type?

I have a swagtron eb7 plus and I believe I shorted my controlller. Can you point me to where I can buy the same or an upgraded one? Is this a DIY project? Happy to go back to the original but having no luck finding out what kind it is.
I find when I am replacing a connector, for a specific reason or need--I just use balance connectors. You can get 'em cheap on the usual scumbag websites with wires soldered on. They go up to 20s for those big batteries, and since this is "mine" I know what I am using this for... But, still, some labels on there helps too. I've used small 1mm bullet connectors on occasion. That works out good, because you can 'bundle' them up, and make a "keyed" connector using heat shrink in clever ways.

I have a D3+ 36v 250w motor. You certainly need a 350w motor and above. Also, a larger capacity battery. Ideally 14ah or 17ah 48v good quality battery which is around the same size as the 36v battery pack.
There has been recently, a DYU-D5 'double battery' (battery B on back carrier), larger motor series recently marketed.
My DYU+3 has an issue, where the system shuts down. Loud werring sound and rear wheel tries to brake.
Also, the bottom assist bracket region, when not pedalling, creates a knocking sensation through the left pedal arm. This tends to happen over a period of time.
Is it the motor, sending something through the line/linked cabal?
If you decide to sell the control box, what would the price be?

I bought a new ebike battery 36 volt 25A and it does not work with my 36 V 250 watt motor..believe the previous owner must have modified the contoller to match the 20A battery that was in there..Quick question..what would the right basic contoller be and where can I buy it?

I haven't used mine in few months but when I did few days ago it just went completely dead all of a sudden.. and when I plug in the charger it would read full charge after a minute.. it would ride for about 2mins then go completely dead again.. im leaning towards the battery being the problem

mr Holmes, a friend has major (to me) problems; he bought a used bolt pro, the previous owner toyed with the throttle, which he asked me to replace, but when i opened the access panel there are burnt wires at the UD3-UL controller, is there any place that you know of where i could get a wiring diagram for the bolt pro so i can get him running, and what controller do you recommend without getting too expensive, please help hooah???
Where you connect the three motor phase wires ? What is the name of those connectors? I have a new controller with those same connections. But my bike has different connectors. I bought 2x ebikes kits for myself... 1 being a mid drive and the other being a hub; both worked great.... I bought my dad a amazon special ebike and tried swapping out it's controller and accessories with a bafang kit(everything but the hub and battery) but am running into an issue where when I turn it on although it shows up as being on pedal assist 1 it does nothing till I change over to 2 or more and than it works fine; the seller sent me a 2nd controller but it's doing the same.... any ideas?
First and foremost, this video is awesome and quite interesting..I have a question, though...So I have a Jetson Bolt which stopped working the other day, out of the blue. (I had gotten about 6 problem-free months out of the Jetson...until now)..I had used the bike that morning, and then put it back on the charger for more than enough time..however when I hit the ON switch this time, the bike would not accelerate ..I dont even think the LED battery indicator lit up at all.
Having no knowledge of the inner workings of an ebike, I don't know where to start when it comes to diagnosing such a problem. All I know is that it wont work at all. I believe there's a short somewhere in the wiring, but not exactly sure. I mean how would I go about finding a short? Better yet, how would I go about running my own little diagnostic to pinpoint the issue? Any suggestions on what I should do first (besides looking for the warranty)? I actually would like to learn to repair the thing myself because I use it to deliver food on DoorDash... any type of solution to starting point would be much appreciated! Cheers
can you do an update? since this bike looks identical to the jetson bolt which many people have, including myself, which I just got about a week ago. you can order a 48v,52v 60v, or 72v battery off of aliexpress then do your video, also can you also try using the upgraded battery with your original controller to see if it burns out or gets any improvements. To make it worth your time try to order one that is 20ah+ then can go really far, I am curious to see how you would install it on the bike if that size, I was thinking of a 30ah, since the shipping cost is almost the same, but will put you back a few hundred dollars

i have a bike with a controller filled with silicone. i really just wanted to shunt mod it and call it a day but i cant. if i replace. ive learned alot about my bike but the controllers have stumped me slightly. Is there anything compatibility wise i need to worry about other than making sure the correct battery voltage and amperage are correct?
i imagine the display would need to be replaced as well. My ebike was from a canadian dealer and they take off all source of branding whatsoever so its been a challenge to find some things.

I have a scooter that someone broke the thumb controls for throttle and break completely off, I have tried ones from other scooters but none of them work and I still get the error code for no throttle and break.

Any update? Have you burn the motor? Because i did, i have put 52v battery in my backpack and havy shunt modded controller... It was fun but only lasted for about 15mins before motor burned shorted phases and burned my controller... It was long walk of shame bac home with rear wheel up in air as it has now "pernament regen" on. Lol!

Instead of your clamp to read amps i use the hobbyking watt meter wich also gives a read of the amps, and is provided with XT60 plugs out of the box, just the same DYU uses... very usefull

Hi, thanks for the very informative video. I'm on my 3rd bike, someone stole #1, then #2 was damaged in an accident (yes I went to the emergency room and my leg was torn open to the muscle facia) when the handlebars disengaged after I encountered a hole the gardeners had left the grass to cover and the bike stopped running. The wire was cut from the handles being put down at the neck. #3 came out of the box with a bad battery and controller. I have the 350W with the app controller. I found two sets of wires that are black and white and pulled one of them apart (i saw a diff video about that) and it gave me a lot of speed. I am interested in purchasing a controller from you. I love this bike and terrorize our golf course every night late to go fishing in the lakes. I also breached the perimeter at the local resort to go fishing but was able to outrun the bicycle security when they showed up. My ebike gang is accepting new recruits. lol

i need advice, after receiving an error 10 on my old controller that i was unable to solve i basically pulled that 350 watt controller out, and put in a 1000watt controller. i did this because i run an awd 2 hub motor bike that when running is like a bullet and can hit 60km. but both controllers got yanked so i can parallel the 2 350w hubs off the 1000w controller. the issue is this. this controller only has 2 phase wires, a blue and a yellow. nothing else.... how the hell do i wire in my motors

I own a dyu D2 I've modded mine to 48v with a gear motor and a 30amp battery thing rockets upto 30mph I love it also the controller supports 60v if I ever wonna go ham lol
I first purchased and excelled in that lasted about 500 miles before the throttle took a crap on me I believe. I took it apart and removed the battery periods and then I went out and purchased an ancheer. So basically I have one brand new bike and another bike with 99% grade components on it but my electrical skills are limited. I would like to be able to take the battery from my first one and either extend the range on my ancheer or get some extra speed or torque out of it. My email is

Watching from video 08:40 and onward. I noted that the rear wheel is pretty flat. However this eBike could move much faster with a better wheel.

I stumbled upon your video because I have one of these Ancheer brand that has been sitting for a year in my den. My daughter didn’t embrace it the way I had imagined. The battery will show fully charged by the charger green light and the battery gauge on bars. It will start to move then shut off and no lights, horn beep or movement. My question is could battery be bad and just fail under load? Sadly this has been used less then an hour. I have probably charged battery 2-3 times while it has sat. Any way to test battery?

I just had a race with a scooter and I lost I have the stock peddles thinking i could use them if i had to but I just did not have enough gear left at 15 mph I believe he was do 20 mph on the scooter is there any way i could just increase the speed to at least 21 mph just not liking getting beet by a childes scooter thank you in advance
