Homemade Hiking Meal - Keto!
This episode of my homemade hiking meals, is on the keto side, being that my hiking buddy, Ahab, is on the keto diet. The challenge with this homemade hiking meal, was finding a keto-friendly bulk of the meal, being that the bulk of my previous homemade hiking meals were noodles, potatoes, or grain. But right out of the box, I found a great bulk ingredient for the keto hiking meal!
This homemade hiking meal carries the fat that you need to burn for that keto energy, with only 15 net carbs, but also packs a great flavor. You can eat keto, and still enjoy the meals on the trail!

Well done!!! And well done again! So impressed. And inspired! Much thanks.
Woodson Sanders thank you! I’ve started making all of my recipes as Keto as possible, because eating all that ramen in creating new recipes, was causing me to gain way too much weight!
Cool idea with the cauliflower. Thank you for sharing.
This looks really good - I'm anxious to try some of your recipes for the summer season. Thanks for sharing!
Maryann Hazel I’m happy to know that my research may be helping others! I have a few Keto recipes going!
I'm so happy I found keto hiking backpacking homemade!!!!
Shirley Miller as many of my new recipes as possible, are geared toward Keto! Stay tuned!
Thank you for making this video, I lost over 60 lbs on Keto and now I am starting day hike, and going to do over night trips soon.
Sushil Ram most of my recipes now are designed to be more keto friendly, so stay tuned! Thanks for watching!
Great video! I know some folks who pack ramen, oatmeal, jerky, and nuts for their hiking trips, which is not what I would want if I go along. You have given me some great ideas to start with, as I didn't know some of those dried products existed. Thanks!!
I have so many recipe videos out there, and even more to come!
Hey just wanted to say thank you for these videos. The prepackaged stuff is so expensive when im buying for 2 kids and a husband too lol thanks so much🥰
lindsey Loo it’s my pleasure! The cost was my initial inspiration to create my own meals, and I’ve developed quite the library of recipes since!
I appreciate every one too haha
Great video. I'm new to Keto and freeze dried food. My question is how much water would you put in this and do you cook it right in the bag. Thank you
Martin Reilly hi! The amount varies from recipe to recipe, but I generally add just enough to cover the ingredients, then add as the water absorbs.
I do make my meals directly in the pouch, with near-boiling water.
The following video is a field-test, that shows how I make my meals on the trail. Thanks!

I've been on keto for a couple years now but I'm new to backpacking - there aren't a lot of easy and inexpensive keto meal options out there so I figured I would make my own. This video really helped me understand how to start putting meals together, thank you!
My question for you: I won't be out backpacking super often, probably just once or twice a year - how do you store freeze dried ingredients once the cans are open? Also, could you make up the vacuum sealed meals far in advance, and how would you store those?
starlight1234321 if you check out my playlists, I’ve added all of my recipes to them, and I even have one dedicated to Keto friendly options. I should even have one in that playlist to show you how I store them! 😊
I usually make up a bunch of meals at once, then vacuum seal them for long-term storage... largely so I’m ready to go at a moment’s notice. As for the individual ingredients, I also transfer large amounts to a Foodsaver bag and seal them up with their enclosed oxygen absorbers inside. I’ve had meals hold up well for two years, but they usually don’t last that long. 😄
Thanks for watching, and enjoy!
@@TrailnameAce Thank you!!
Been looking for this info YOU offer for some time now THANKS
Moy MacGill I’m making all of my new recipes as Keto as possible now! Stay tuned, and thanks for watching!
Mountain House is good and I've used it.. however, you might want to check out THRIVE freeze dried meats and foods. I prefer mtn house meals, but I prefer THRIVE ingredients... Chicken with a dash of garlic powder and celery salt with pepper... Hydrate and add Mayo.. Great trail salad.

refarns71 thanks for the tip!
I went to their site per your suggestion. Wow! I'm impressed. Looks really good. Thanks for the heads-up!
Why didn't you put the complete recipe in your comments section and in cups , spoons or ounces ?
Powdered coconut milk would go well in that recipe. I'm going to try it
Check out more of my recipes... I actually use powdered coconut milk is some!
How much water do you add? Loved the video
morrowt2133 I generally add just enough water to cover the ingredients, then keep an eye on the meal to make sure that the food doesn’t completely absorb the water. If it does, I just add a little more at a time, until everything is hydrated. I’ve added videos to show how I prepare my meals in the field, in my playlists, if you’d like to learn more. Thanks!
I wanted to see it rehydrated and to know the cost
Maddie Floyd the cost varies depending on the market, and specifically which ingredients you go with. I believe this one came in at under $2-3 per meal, which is far less than you’ll spend on commercially-prepared camp meals. You also get the benefit of knowing what is in it, and controlling the sodium content better, because most of the shelf brands have a huge sodium content. And my meals tend to take up far less space in my pack.
Do you have links for ordering the ingredients?
violetgypsie I do! If you go to trailnameace.com/camp-cooking (a link is in the description as well), you’ll find links to all of the ingredients I use. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Any idea of how much each meal cost to put together?
Wouldn't it be way cheaper to just get a dehydrator and do these yourself. Just wondering.
Matt Crandall there’s a big difference in foods that are dehydrated, versus those that are freeze dried. Dehydrated foods take much longer to rehydrate, and rarely if ever have a fresh taste or consistency. Freeze dried foods rehydrate quickly and, if you come across the right brand, taste and feel fresh! I looked into a freeze drying system, but they start at around $1200... and I can buy a LOT of ingredients for that! 😄
Thanks for the question, and I hope it helps!
I have bought a dehydrator and experimenting also bought a food saver...trying to do keto off grid solo backpacking ..looking for ideas has up north working ideas weight per meal each day will do IF
@@TrailnameAce Just a quick note: According to the Keto and Co website their cauliflower is "Air Dried" which is the same as Dehydrated not Freeze Dried. So you could do it yourself with a dehydrator.
I’ve found dehydrating canned chicken tastes much better than freeze dried. Make sure to break up the chunks so it gets dehydrated evenly. Yummmmm
As you mentioned that you were going with another person, I’m wondering if that meal is one dinner for one person, or if it’s enough to feed two people? I guess I’m asking how many “servings” it is?
At Creed one pouch is enough for one person.
Trailname Ace excellent, thanks. Oh, and it really sounds yummy!
At Creed I have a playlist of all of the recipes I’ve created to date, and most of them are now keto friendly!
Trailname Ace wow thank you! I’m not KETO yet, I’ve just been transitioning from high carb vegetarian. I don’t actually hike, but my husband and I often take long road trips, and I’ve been looking for low carb foods that I can easily prepare from the back of the car, and I’m definitely going to look thru your channel!
At Creed I live in Florida, so I’m always prepared for emergency, and I have a large selection of my meals in a bucket ready to go! My meals aren’t just for hiking, and I’m happy that you get it! 😊
At 370 calories I'd need 10 meals a day 😞
What do you call this?
Michael Mitchell before I started working on specific recipes, I was designing specialty meals for people on special diets, at their request. So I was just looking for ingredients to meet those requirements, while still providing essential nutrients for the trail. So I really only call this one, “Ace’s Keto Pouch.” Boring, I know... being that you’re the first to ask, I’ll let you name it! What would you like to call it?
@@TrailnameAce Hmmm... probably best named after I try it, but maybe "Ace's Keto Chicken Stir-fry" Looking forward to trying your recipes next weekend. Always wanted to make my own mainly to know what goes in it. Something about staring into a mountain house bag that is so mysterious (not a quality i appreciate in my food). Thanks for sharing! Subbed!
Michael Mitchell that’s one of the biggest reasons that I started making my own, as well as the cost. Thanks for the sub!
Just buy KFC and put it in the plastic. Haha
Ian Valeza lol, then there’s the issue of weight, and the bulk it takes up in the pack! 🤣
