    Crushed pork rinds for the trail - genius! Space consolidation, yummy food, ability to mix with other ingredients to add variety of meals. For that and all the other ideas - Thank You!!! I'm looking forward to my next backpacking trip even more now.

      Also cheapest form of dehydrated meat. By a long shot. About $6 a pound.

      James Aviles Absolutely! Good luck on your keto/backpacking journey; it’s definitely doable! Next time we go I would probably pack a little more fats, and pack some sort of higher healthy carb to add with dinner to replenish our glycogen stores after all of the strain from hiking! Carbs are definitely beneficial after strenuous workouts, especially hours of backpacking. 😊

    Since you like peanut butter and MCT oil, try mixing peanut butter with coconut oil (54% MCT oil). It's delicious. I just scoop about half the peanut butter out of the jar, add some coconut oil, and mix it up in the jar.

    Very enjoyable. I'm trying to get this keto thing done and with finding your video, I don't have that "what am I going to do " when I'm bikepacking. Thanks from an old man trying to change his life.

    Great video! I’m actually eating Atkins right now and we are going on a 5 days hike here in Alaska on the Kesugi Ridge Trail. I needed some low carb ideas for backpacking food and I appreciated the help. Fun video and I liked how to made it a story.

    Crushed pork rinds are a great idea. (Pork rinds and tuna is fantasic!) I like to keep crushed almonds on hand, as they mix with almost anything to add a little crunch without saying, “Hey... there’s an almond in my (insert any mushy food here)!”

    If your keto adapted does't body fat count for calories? It seems to me that keto food should be LIGHTER because it's more energy dense and all you need to be the most concerned about is sufficient protein (just thinking out loud) I plan on a trip like this later this year to see how well keto works and see if I can go a full week and do 75 miles.
    LOL McDonalds.
    Did you do any physical preparation? How much weight were you carrying. Do you backpack enough to analyze how your keto diet did? You did not mention it in the video.

    • @rachelmwalters
      @rachelmwalters  Před 5 lety

      John Most people can play around a bit with macros once they’re fat adapted, yes, but if you’re not giving yourself enough of a signal to burn fat as fuel (through eating dietary fat), then your body will switch back to sugar burning through gluconeogenesis (converting protein to glucose). I experienced this big time a few months into keto and explain more in my “why keto stopped working for me” video.
      Lol McDonald’s is right. 😂 We will definitely be more prepared for on the road breakfasts next time so we don’t have to do that again.
      We typically do train physically prior to backpacking trips, but didn’t get the chance for this particular one, so we were a bit more out of shape than usual. Considering that, we felt great eating keto on this trip and would definitely do it again. I didn’t feel it was necessary to explain this in the video since this was strictly to give ideas on what people can eat. 👍🏼
      Thanks for all the questions; hopefully this helped clear things up!

      I was not laughing at eating McDonalds but at what you showed us about the packaging. Their employees are not critical thinkers. It's like going to a restaurant and ordering 6 eggs and they bring them out on three plates. For some reason the cooks are brainwashed into putting only two eggs on a plate.
      For my training I'm training my legs and my metabolism. I hike as far as I can (about 15 miles) up and down hills on nothing but cheese and bulletproof coffee for 5 hours. Then I come home and have a fat rib-eye stake :o)

      @rachelmwalters  Před 5 lety

      John Haha for sure about McDonald’s! Definitely not critical thinkers.
      Your training plan sounds great! Make sure you’re getting lots of veggies in there too! 😄

    Keto foods are not heavier. Fats have almost twice as many calories per gram as carbs so the foods are both more compact and lighter per calorie. Protein and carbs have the same calories per gram so protein is equal weight per calorie.

    What kind of protein shake is that? Every one I've tried makes me want to gag, especially if an unmixed lump hits the back of my throat. Gack!

    Keto food is MUCH lighter because fat is the main food and is the most calorie dense.
