The Downfall of Donut Media

- Recent HiLow series caused some controvery with the Subaru community and has people wondering if Donut Media is no longer an automotive channel; but an entertainment channel. In today's short, we talk a little about it and why you may want to cut them more slack than you think. But is Donut straying away from who they are or have they always been an entertainment channel?
- Zábava
I love the donut team, but what do you think about their content? lmk below!

You sound like a computer voice in this video lmao
DONUT SUPREMACY!
My biggest complaint was that they just stopped doing “Up To Speed”, I used to watch all their videos exclusively for that show and they just dropped it
@@Grocbeasti just commented the same thing right before reading this
I don't watch them OR Hoonigan.
The videos people claim to dislike are what pays for the videos we all love. You have to support the company as a whole so they can continue to grow. I’ve been watching Donut since they were shooting up to speed in the hallway, and it’s awesome to see how far they’ve come.
Didn’t the have shooting up to speed on Snapchat? Ages ago I haven’t had Snapchat / Facebook / Instagram in like 4 years
@@GIXXRBRAH750 yeah I believe so
Except that the videos that pay are the ones that they do only💀

you my man, have the ryt mindset
Gotta pay the bills somehow.
The most Recent Hi-Low was their most expensive.
The one with the WRX was horrible. they had no idea what they was doing
@@neilbrown82 as someone who has owned a WRX before, I think it is unfair for you to say that after the engine exploded like 3 times
@Se7en Se7ens lol at least 4 times they take an engine with a known pickup issue straight to the track and ran high RPMs what did they expect
@@neilbrown82 the thing is high low is all about showing what we can do at home and teaching us how to do it the wrx is not for the entry level enthusiast at all it is a very complicated motor because of it being a boxer vq’s get hate but ej’s are worse even the turbo 2.0 and 2.5 they all have the same issue that should’ve been solved by the manufacturer
@Nemesis Anarchy both high and low blew engine such a clown show....
And now zack and jerry left to make their own channel.
Yeah this short aged well
They just dropped their 1st (a regular one, not a video explaining why they left) video today (June 28)
I know. And it has more views that the latest donut video in about the same time frame.
James likely has parted ways too
Those lesbian dudes started their own CZcams… I hope they fail.
Seeing as Zach and Jeremy left, it's gonna go further downhill.
Personally, I miss the Up To Speed series where James was the literal Sensation
You can only do so many episodes before it gets repetitive 😂
Fr. There no 'More power' anymore.
Up to Speed is literally all I watched.
Yes
there’s only so many cars that are well known and liked that you can give the backstory of. of course you can talk about the smaller companies/shops (ex: RWB, Hoonigan, Ken Block, etc) but that wont generate views since most average car enthusiasts will not know who they are.
I lowkey just miss Up To Speed and Miracle Whips
Me too man..
Been waiting for miracle whips season 3 for yeeeeaaars
Miracle whips is extremely underrated. I too miss OG Up to Speed and Bumper to Bumper, but I know things change.
and bumper to bumper
Science garage
I really miss Money Pit. Zack was the best host! Dude was just a natural!
it gives me 2020 COVID-19 nostalgia
100%. Very informative compared to high low and entertaining at the same time.
Money Pit was an absolute blast. Zack single handedly made me buy a Miata and learn mechanical stuff to work on it myself. Got a lot of love for that show.
Ironic cause thats the series that started their downfall
WELL
And now jerry and Zach have their own channel, long time coming
As a fan of donut media for many years now, I'd say they should bring back the up to speed and dive deep more about tuning shops in Japan like the RE Amemiya, JUN, Seeker, Top Fuel, FEED, Garage Mak, Car Shop Glow, J's Racing, Le Mans endurance racing, Wangan Midnight, Time Attack racing especially its origin which is located at Tsukuba Circuit and ofc, Best Motoring Official!!! I know that may sound a lot but atleast they should cover one of them hopefully at the very least tho!! Anyways, I still love their contents regardless but I wish they could be able to bring back that up to speed series someday!!!
They are at the point where they need more people to cover the daily content in the back with weekly releases. While Nolan And James do their big show content
@@9manny99 i see, so that's the reason why they couldn't be able to bring back those series yet. Anyways, thank you for that observation!!
Maybe they should make a series about all tuning magazines and their history
@@Makaya9s totally agree man!!! Actually, they're one of the reasons why I've gone this far in depths of car culture even more especially in Japanese car tuning scene, I'm sure that there's still a lot to learn more about them, not just their tuning shops but also their golden age of underground scene like the Kanjozoku which is basically group of track oriented Civic builds (mostly the EG, EK and EF hatches), Midnight Club (which known nowadays as Midnight Racing Team if I'm not wrong) and the story of Time Attack Racing and how it became popular worldwide!! I mean, I'm already kinda familiar with them since I was a kid but I've never been this much in depth to their world tbh. I do hope they could be able to make a cover those things that I've mentioned in their up to speed series someday if ever!!!
I think they should bring back through Siri but I do think stuff like reviewing the worst blank ever on Amazon or on the Internet is a good filler to help tide us over until another big production can be uploaded
The new content isn't too bad, we just want a new up to speed lmao
A ton
This is absolutely the answer lol
Yeeees
We need Bart back!
I mean there isn’t an infinite number of (old?) car. They did finish the job on that
Not every video is gonna be a hit. The problem with informative entertainment companies like this is that they can only cover so many things before they run out. They still do cool things and have fun, and I'm here for it. The small team makes it more personal too, I like that about donut
Donut got bought by a large conglomerate and is now told what kind of content to make, unlike the content/direction decisions they made prior. A big reason Jeremiah and Zach left the company.
Yeah, I'd rather support the creators directly and not a bunch of idiots in suits who are self important with their money. Those kinds people should be taken care of out back like what you'd do for a beloved pet with rabies.
Corporations as always dawg
I miss science garage. Learned so much shit from hours of watching Bart explain shit in a fun and informative way
Science Garage is what got me into Donut as well.
Unfortunately, Bart left. And yes, Science Garage and Up to Speed were what hooked me to Donut.
I still remember the occasional lore from those videos
I miss Bart and that little segment. It used to be educational AND fun and now it’s just fun lol
@@jdapaul1351 why did he leave?
This aged well unironically
Gotta admit, the donut team are responsible for some if not most of the best and funniest commercials
And it's made by THEMSELVES
There commercials alone they do make them
That much better
I love the guys that work at Donut. I would watch them review food.

@@johnbarker256 you are spot-on. why doesn't this review exist?
If you count the exhaust beans, then you have.

Donut is still Donut. They just added some sprinkles that some of us don't care for. To afford what they're doing they need the daily videos to support the builds. Watch what you like. Don't watch what you don't.
I like a plain donut with a sprinkle of cinnamon. But I understand they need to sell some other flavors.
It's just them being lazy. Next step is the podcast.
@CABdosdos easy for you too say while you are watching a short about them you don’t know how hard it would be too have a automotive shop in California they do this as a full time job in order too make you videos you like they have too get money somehow.

I've been more surprised than not by how useful some if the Wish and Temu "junk" turned out to be.
The truth of the matter is... if these "low production" reviews weren't getting hits, then they would have stop doing them LONG ago.
I just miss seeing shows like Bumper 2 bumper, up to speed and wheelhouse on the channel. They were amazing formats
Yeah I wish they’d come back
And don't cost near as much as a build to make.....you think they'd be focusing on the videos that cost less and got more views.
I honestly don’t care, as long they upload I will support them and keep watching every video
This is the definition of a fan boy
Exactly, i like the review of tools and products they do and the reacts to the facebook/tiktok hacks
@@oscarjeans4119 subaru fanboys seething still that hi-low showed how utterly dog shit their favorite over rated car is.
@@probablynotdad6553 that’s incorrect tho lol
@@probablynotdad6553you’re crippled lmao. How you gonna talk shit about a car you can’t drive
My theory is that the amount of maintenance they had to do on HiLow S3 got so expensive that they are dialing back the content for a while to recoup their losses
Honestly, I like the variety of content. I've been watching them since before the 1 million mark, and seeing them grow and expand has been awesome. With Jeremiah and Zach splitting off to do their own thing, you have another avenue for content with familiar faces.
This aged well.
I've been watching for years now and really, I'm ok with what they are doing of lately. Like you said it's a team of like 10 guys and NONE of them are professional mechanics or fabrication experts.
I do like the new videos but feel like they should supplement the up for speed like videos. Like bonus content on a DVD 📀
yes but they all have been doing this for many years now, they should at least know stuff about cars but it seems like they all share 1 braincell
Saw the title, downfall of donut, and all I expected it to start with is, “there’s nothing actually, it’s perfect the way it is”😂
hahah, I love watching their stuff, but there's some heat from the subi crowd and then I saw some tiktoks out there talking smack so I want to touch on it!
@@AlexMartini. well deserved heat after what they did to those WRX’s
@@lilstarship34 they did the same thing they did to a pair of 350zs. What’s wrong?
@@deevizm8035 painted a pretty bad picture for the cars, they have a reputation for being unreliable but they made it seem way worse than it is lol, not their fault they just got really unlucky but people now think they're insanely unreliable
@@lilstarship34 subis are crap, and I own one :/
CZcams ruined car culture. Once every channel started building custom $250k builds with 10 turbos and 2 engines and 6 wheel drive, it alienated us regular wrenchers. Most of us can afford one project car and maybe a daily driver if we’re lucky, and many don’t have a garage to work in, so seeing over-the-top insane rides kinda kills the joy in what we’re able to do at home with harbor freight tools. Donut’s staff get rich and famous and no longer relate to us. That’s why the tool reviews are popular. Top Gear is similar, once they started only showing exotics, we said “no thanks, man”
I used to love eating their wheelhouse episodes every week, they were informative and entertaining. I wish they bring them back
I miss their well researched essay video like up to speed and wheelhouse
The only issue I have with Donut Media is that I'd like to see Up To Speed come back. It's my favourite type of content they've done.
Agreed, it would even be nice if they redid up to speed with some of the actual engines of the cars series, like the RAM hemi engines so we can get the complexity that the car community wants while making it understandable to a regular watcher.
true that
There's only so many things in the car world worth a whole UTS episode about.
Absolutely, the D list was pretty and should come back also
@@theyoungfool.1895 well said
Bro predicted it 😭
Donut's awesome, the content is usually funducational, and varies widely. Seeing them do things a lot of channels aren't is what gets me to watch them. Once they do things like High Low, im all in.

The car community can be really stupid sometimes. I honestly appreciate the reviews they're doing and it genuinely helps me when I want to purchase more tools
Thinking this didn't age well...
They abandoned what made them for what's easy, that's why donut fell off.
I’ve been watching them for about 5ish years and I think the stuff they do is good enough and with the effort they put into their videos I think it’s perfectly acceptable
seems pretty straight forward that they have to make all sorts of videos to fund the expensive content.
You’d think that but a shocking amount of people don’t understand how “seasons” work and demanded a new series immediately after the last
It’s not a moment where i don’t tune in to CZcams to watch donut media, fitment , or Alex’s, kota and gels videos while I’m wrenching on my car, definitely keeps me occupied and accompanied since I do my own work by myself
They should start doing up to speeds, science garage, wheelhouse, d list, etc cuz they were the legendary ones and that was the reason why I started watching them in 2019
Completely agree
I like what they do, they’re production minded and think of everything first. Got nothing but respect for them
I wish they could do more of their old content but I also feel like they’re builds keep getting wilder and wilder which means it’s more expensive so it does make sense on those types of videos, they’re not just trying to sell out. I still get excited when they post a new video on the current Ford Ranger baja truck build they’re workin on
I just love Zach. Man was always teaching me something on ECS tuning, and then he did the money pit Miata and it was informative, but you got to see more personality. I got a little bit of that here lately with the Honda civic they were working on.
I think their high end videos are so good that people just want more of that, so the casual uploads in between are disappointing. What I don't think people realize is that Donut is uploading more frequently than they used to as well.
People may also be missing the more informative episodes like my personal favorite up to speed
Well maybe they should just stick to uploading less frequently, but with higher quality.
I wholeheartedly agree @@LuckyCharms777
I miss Science Garage, Bart was THE reason I watched them consistently.
Got hooked on Money Pit and the rest is history, watch every upload to this day.
I know Bart moved on to be with his family, but I would kill to have a new Science Garage even though he's gonem
Jeremiah and/or Zach would make great hosts for Science Garage.
I miss the daily transmission. Watching that was like goofing off at the shop with the boys on a Saturday.
I'll never forget when they got to their 100th Episode and James started crying. I was crying as well. I really started watching them from the Jump because James was just awesome at breaking down the history. I do miss their old videos unfortunately they've basically covered everything.
donut media is hands down my favorite automotive channel iv been watching since day one . I dont care if they started making henti videos I'd still watch
now that's dedication
You sayin that like we don’t already know you watch “henti” videos
Actually I don't mind if the donut crew review donuts pastries or as a food travel how since they got the character
"Not by some massive company" They sold out in 2021 to Recurrent Ventures, a $400 million dollar digital media venture capital fund. They're not the indie guys who brought us science garage and hi-Low season 1.
Needing to grind the algorithm for resources isn't an excuse
I miss science garage most of all
They were always backed by this kind of capital. The original investors just sold to a new vc fund cashing out. Didn’t change the people who actually wrote and made the work

@@MasterCraftX8 but even their original round of funding was based primarily around the success of up to speed - that's what brought in the audience/got all the views & was what gave investors an idea of their potential...then they go and scrap it for videos about shitty amazon purchases and like $2,000 car jacks..? it sucks bc it's not as if it's a high-cost series to produce (obviously), yet they still go & spend way too much on "shitty" products to test & videos the audience would certainly give up in exchange for some of the original content/series instead...
They used to be good until they brought a lot of not entertaining people on the channel let’s be real James is the star of the channel
As someone who isn't a car guy, I recently started watching them because of these videos. Then I went on to watch more car guy oriented content. I've learned so much about cars because of them
I love the review stuff, the D-list, and hi-low. I do miss Jeremiah doing the “in-depth” stuff ie the videos of F1 tech and suspension systems. I’m a mechanical engineer and hearing from someone with the accolades that he does on top of the production I thought it was absolutely amazing

Their latest video is literally a Chinese EV review.
They killed all their most popular shows. The hosts don’t even say the name of the show it’s just “this is donut.” It’s all blending together to appeal to the larger child audience now.

I love donut media and you should too!
They aren’t just taking a $40k crate motor posting a 20 minute install video and go drag racing 3 days later. It real and more relatable to everyday car people. Almost no viewer can relate to the biggest car CZcamsrs.
I miss bumper to bumper series
when you are trying to do what you love-you cannot please everyone.
Aaaaand now it’s probably going to die even more with Zach and Jeremiah leaving
2 top guys just left lol
I love Donut but I'm curious how it's going to work out now that 2 of their best have left to start their own channel
It’s crazy donut started from the depths of Snapchat just so newbies can tear them down DONUT FOREVER
I enjoy everything they do honestly. Even their review videos are fun to watch so I don't have a problem with it
Some are def more entertaining than others, but I still watch almost every vid just to see if it has that magic
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'd get rid of every Amazon gadget and tool review for them to bring Up To Speed back.
it's over they literally covered mostly everything,
All that's left are small niches that most ppl probably wouldn't want to see honestly once they started covering, games,Priuses, and tractors it was all over and not to mention the grocery Econ cars they covered
I understand that direction since the saturation of car channels in yt
I remember James literally mentioned back then, if not for the Up To Speed, the channel wouldn't even take off substantially like it was now. Too bad they removed that segment when it's literally one of their most popular ones.
“Up to speed” is what introduced me to donut media and I’ve already seen every episode they’ve put out in that series. I understand there are only so many iconic cars worth their own episode and they’ve already done the majority of them but it’s always a good day when I see they’ve uploaded a new one.
The whole thing with the subaru engines is that Donut doesnt know how to work on those engines, so they shot themselves in the foot repeatedly on that one.
As for the content, it has become more stale reaction videos. I unsubscribed after about 3 years of watching them.
I miss Barts Science Garage.
Yes! Bart had such a corny nack for making things interesting and funny!
#bringbackbart
Between the builds, the podcast, other popular series/challenges, and the fact they post almost every day makes it okay for me to see them post these kinds of videos. Also, they usually aren’t that bad if you actually watch them because they have such great chemistry
Love seeing you defend a competitor. Donut Media will forever be loved and cherish. They have such an incredible backlog of content, it should be excusable to change things up in the interest of a greater good.
Their latest videos have been them putting a ton of money into an old civic. Who. Cares. Their new content IS bad content. It's incredibly wasteful spending that is of interest to a very, very small portion of the viewership.
Dawg that’s literally what they do is car building and modding like what??
Donut is still hands down the best car channel on CZcams.
Tbh I kinda like hagerty’s revelations series more now than anything donut has done for a bit. Highly recommend checking it out. Icons is pretty good too. Or any of them with Jason actually😂

Im happy that they get legit advertisments like from nissan its one of the coolest thing I have seen from a car youtube channel or a CZcams channel in general. It makes watching ads a little more enjoyable when its from them
I hope the best for you guys, looking forward to the new content.
The biggest problem I have with donut is they need to take their time. CZcamss algorithm doesn't support it so I get the fact of them making filler just to pay the bills
Vice Grip Garage is the best. His content is so consistent and it’s always top tier, despite his success and monetization.
JERRY AND JOBE STARTED THEIR OWN CHANNEL “Bigtime”
Their final nail came when they were "acquired" by a media company
One of the few shows I watched was up to speed. I'm not left behind, I just left Donut behind.
Well said. Definitely hadn’t crossed my mind, but I could see where hardcore auto enthusiasts would feel that way. I appreciate you shedding light on, and explaining the situation. I think you did a great job balancing out the views, and ultimately Donut is just a few bois doing car stuff they love- videos are gonna take some time.
I would say they are approachable for new members of the car community. And as an experienced enthusiast I appreciate that.
The fact that donut media isn't one of those big channels building a car in a few days is why I like them so much. Average Joe car enthusiasts like me who are absolute gear heads but don't have 50 people at our disposal we can hire to build cars is what makes that channel feel more on a personal level. Even if the stuff I build is totally different from what they've built, I can still relate to them.
That said I love their car product reviews. If never buy them but it's cool to see somebody giving an actual opinion instead of watching a corny biased ad. There's actually a couple products they've reviewed that turned out to be really good surprisingly. And I've bought them too.
Donut is an amazing channel, I've been watching them since I was maybe 13 or 14 years old, maybe 15. I'm 20 now. I can't really remember when I started watching them I've been watching so long.
Donut was bought by a private equity firm, and the hosts don't actually own the channel (and didn't before the acquisition either). They're just employees and don't get the final say on what gets made.
Talk about a bad take, this video did not age well, the real reason is because private equity gutted the company
We need more Cherokee content. Cherokee people. Cherokee tribe.
I hope both you and Dount find success. You guys got great chemistry so im subbing on the spot 👌
I started watching when Zack was building the miata on money pit. While some of their episodes might not be what you want to watch, someone is watching and loving it. To each their own. I also really like their new channel, real mechanic stuff. Sandro and Angelina are awesome
I miss up to speed a lot. And loved the b2b series, specially the early ones
I actually love their "review" videos, because they are funny and my friends and we all hang out. Totally.
And now Jer and Jobe have left and formed BigTime
I've been with donut since the beginning days of up to speed. Watching them grow to what they are today and having a team of awesome personalities had been a blast. They will never fall
Your channel, donut and gears and gasoline are some of my favorite car content creators
I still enjoy Donut’s content. To be honest I haven’t watched their most recent build videos due to some other automotive channels I follow but it’s good to know I JM have them there to still go to. I think they have a good group of people in front of the camera and pretty cool guests
