  • Last week in my quest to make a full 18th century ensemble I make a petticoat (or a hobbit dress if you wear it the right way). This week, I’m working on some accessories including the stomacher from 8161 American Duchess for Simplicity pattern and POCKETS!
    Pocket instructions start at 5:30.
The pockets are based on this V&A Museum article: www.vam.ac.uk/content/articles...
Along with this random pattern from Pinterest:

Next up on my historbounding to-do list is sewing the accompanying American Duchess for Simplicity bodice (and the Big Reveal!™). And eventually once I get the courage the stays/corset from the 8162 pattern.

Okay but these look way better than hip packs. This design looks relatively easy to modernize to something "today fashionable" why has this not been done?!

Right?! I was just thinking I should make some smaller ones to wear with my modern dresses that don't have pockets. #bringbackpockets2020

HAHA. I was yelling at my cat last night for jumping all over my sewing table while I was trying in desperation to copy the pattern down for a mock-up. She has pica and wanted her spoon of moist food. Like every hour. Adore your kitty in the ruff. Great use of the decorative stitches on your machine too! You have my subscription. Awsome editing job.

Pocketsssssssss!!!!! I just finished a mockup of an eighteenth century skirt today, and picked out my fabric. So glad I found your tutorial to return to once I'm ready to accessorize - the sliding pocket is genious! 🤩

Update - the real skirt is complete! Time to see if I can fit pockets into my to-do list by this weekend!

I'm working on some pockets now - I've been longing for tie on pockets for just my normal wardrobe.

@@katencat Right? For sure planning on just having most of the bottoms in my wardrobe as I build it be full skirts with slits for pockets.

    🙏🌹 excellent pockets.
Just this morning I made a sliding tiny pocket for my phone (to put on my belt)..
I love these huge ones though.

I just love this! I started with the McCall's pattern for the same skirt but the stomacher and jacket honestly scare me! I think I might switch over to the Simplicity for that! THANK YOU so much for posting these videos I'm totally subscribing!!!!

Yay, good luck with your project! I haven't tried a McCall's pattern recently, but I'm pretty novice at sewing from scratch still and the Simplicity one was very doable.

This is such a wonderful video! I watched it a few weeks ago and today made myself a mockup pocket using this as my pattern and guidelines! I am planning to make quilted pockets out of scraps now that I sort of understand the process. Thank you!

That's awesome! Quilted pockets sound like an amazing use for scraps. I'm saving mine up to use as historical bum pad/bum roll stuffing.

I want to make that with a third short one on the back, so I can just slide my phone right into the small of my back, maybe use some wide horsehair braid to give it a bump for the skirt to fall over like a... (Rump? Bustle?) I just use the word yesterday. a modernized bum pad that you can also keep your phone in. I think I'll make that as soon as I finish my summer dress.

How practical are those in use? I am contemplating If I should sew edwardian style pockets into my skirt, or sew this typ of pocket for beneith . . .the pro for these is, I have to see them once and have them for several skirts to come, but I am unsure of how they wear and things like that

    • @katencat
      @katencat  Před 3 lety +4

They're pretty handy! I've honestly considered seam ripping some of my modern dresses to wear these underneath. If you do want to wear them as part as an everyday outfit I'd tweak some of my instructions. Go for a thinner/less bulky waistband that what I did. Twill tape folded in half would probably work well. Also depending on what you want to carry, making slightly smaller pockets than this would make them a little less ungainly for everyday wear.
