No seriously, why are pockets not a thing for EVERY dress now?
Morgan Donner id love pants that have large pockets so I can carry more things at work
Because of the regency clingy, shear fabric showing them long enough to establish purses for those who had somebody to carry those and fashion aspiring the sleek upper-class siluets ever since?... Stupid.
because fast fashion doesn't allow for it....the fabrics suck and it takes time...
Because of the silhouette in fashion and it's evil twin, fast fashion. The overwhelming viewpoint is that pockets add bulk to the hips and no woman wants to look like she's got bigger hips than she does. Keep in mind, this viewpoint is changing and more and more dresses are being constructed and shown on recent runways with pockets. So they are making a comeback, just like everything else. Fashion is not an island, it is a response.
Dresses? Not even pants have functional pockets! They fit half my phone, which I don't like. I wanna make larger pockets for my pants. And maybe skirts as well.
YES TO POCKET REVOLUTION 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
YES
Tbh a lot of skirts/dresses need more pockets.
I got one dress from a store and was genuinely happy that it had some pockets because I'm always wearing skirts or dresses and get tired of denim skirts being one of the few options that have them. Nothing wrong with denim, but variety is good and even better when made practical for going out and about.
VIVE LA RÉVOLUTION DE POCHE!
Me, a man whose pockets are large enough to carry a small child: I don't need to watch this video.
Also me: Heart shaped pocket, WRITE THAT DOWN WRITE THAT DOWN!!!

You pass the vibe check
Yesssss ❤️
I’m giddy over those too!!! ♥️
I think more men should carry little kids in their pokets !
It would allow the mothers some time off....
For sewing. 😆
I feel like the lack of pockets in the women's clothing industry is due to a conspiracy with the purse industry.
It's one of the reasons that most of my dresses are now eShakti. Pockets!!!!
I have that theory too. It dawned from this idea that women started carrying leaflets with various information for various movements, especially womens rights movements. And just moved straight into the era of "well they don't get pockets, let's solve that problem by not putting pockets in clothes but advertising bags! For twice as much as a regular pair of pants!"
Good point!!!
No. It comes from WWII the US War Board sought to reduce fabric usage by 15% thus sleeves and hems grew shorter and pockets disappeared. Fashion thus began evolving without them. We as consumers embraced the new silhouette and didn't demand the return of pockets. If people would do even a little research they would know where pockets went and stop with dumb conspiracy theory. Did the handbag industry take advantage of a need in the market? Well, yes of course they did. Did they embark on a mission to eradicate pockets? No. Remember facts are more important than what one may "feel".
@@YTistooannoying Hast one ever heard of the concept of a joke?

Well because you honestly share your mistakes so I can learn from them and not make the same mistake. Also way less stress seeing that other people also mess up now and then than trying to follow a perfect example while I'm not perfect myself.
*peering into the closet every morning:* Still haven't grown all those pockets?? Useless. Outrageous.

When I was a little girl about 60 years ago oh gees that's a long time ago, I had a heart shaped pocket on a ribbon on my bridesmaids dress and I had forgotten all about it until I saw your beautiful heart shaped pocket I loved your video so clear thank you so much chris x
Hi, this is really random, but I love your username.
Thank you xx
I'm going to share a pocket solidarity story:
My parents and I were traveling about 2 years ago. We all stayed in one hotel room. We had hung up some of our clothing in the little closet in our room. It was early in the morning and the room was dimly lit. My dad grabbed his pants and a shirt from the closet, went into the bathroom, showered, shaved, and changed. He comes walking out of the bathroom looking confused. He looks at my mom and asks, "Where did you buy these jeans? They're stretchy." I notice the bootcut leg and the butt pocket detail and start laughing right as he sticks his hands in the front pockets and they stop at the fingers. I informed him that the pants came from Target and are actually mine. He replied, "are all women's pants pockets this sad?" My mom and I confirmed, in unison. He changed into his own pants. We still laugh about it. He says he'll never again mock us for carrying large purses/backpacks when he couldn't even fit his empty money clip in the front pockets. 😂
I should not have loved this as much as I did.
Thank you for sharing! The pain is real! 😂
So Funny! I lengthened the pockets in all my daughter's jeans in high school, because they were so small.
@@teresajohnson9594 My husband and I met back in high school. One day when we were on a date playing putt putt, he asked me why I carried a purse instead of putting stuff in my pockets. "We're juniors in high school, Caitlyn, you can't possibly need that much stuff." So I stuck my hip out and dared him to put his cell phone, keys, and wallet in my front pocket. All 3 items had been I his left front pocket all afternoon. He started with his phone and he was BAMBOOZLED when it only was halfway covered when all the way down into the pocket 😂😂😂😂 Since then, he offers to carry my bag for me often and he puts his stuff in it, too.
Awww
But now my phone won’t fit in my pocket because there’s too much sedition in there
You have to be careful to empty your pockets of sedition every evening. You don't want it getting stale!
I laughed way too hard at this
🤣
aww I thought you were just happy to see me
Well then perhaps it's time to remove the phone - to give life to all that sedition ;)
I'm a wedding coordinator and you'll be pleased to know that in the last 2 years I've seen a few wedding dresses with pockets! It such an awesome idea as a bride doesn't want to carry a bag, good for their lipstick for touch-ups in the photos, but I'm waiting for the first ceremony to be interrupted by the brides phone ringing! 😳😂🤣
The whole “leveling up in pockets” made me think of DnD character sheets, and then I started thinking of how fun a “make your own sewist character sheet” video/activity would be! Could be a good skill for reflection too :)
I love all the pockets!!!
I think I'm gonna go do that now (privately - no video). Have you ?
This is actually a really cute idea! I also love picturing my half orc barbarian, named Benni Zkovac, hunched over her sewing machine patching her damaged and worn battle clothes.
I personally like a pocket in a fun color or print. It's like the lining of a coat. Somethings are just purely for the wearer to only know of and enjoy.
Angel Ramirez Right. I loved the contrasting colors on some of the dresses/skirts.
@Kayleigh Reimert love the weirdly specific percentage :D
Sometimes the lining is the best part of the outfit.
I love the different coloured fabric cos it screams sedition!

"Yes, I can turn my iron down...but I won't" was my mom's favorite iron setting too!
These pocket ideas are fantastic :D
In utter shock, a skirt that I picked up from an op-shop a couple of years ago came with six pockets. ¡¡¡ O_O !!!
I only checked for fit when I bought it and somehow missed all six of the pockets.
Six pockets!
Enough that I actually lose things in it.
WHERE are all those pockets placed?!?
So much sedition!
I have a denim jacket that my grandma gave me, which also has six pockets. I adore it! I can also never find my phone. 😅😅
@@VaryaEQ I have one of those! I lost my favorite wristlet. My fav lipstick was in it, and I had to report my cards lost. About a month later I'm finally over it, but not really. Her wearing each dress as she finishes it really resonates with me.
I teach, and I have for years been encouraging my students to become fashion designers and add pockets back in to women's clothing! Thanks for this video. I'll just have to do it myself.
Oh good, my remember my sewing, well needlework, drafting and textiles teachers from a little rural school in the 1950s with love. It meant so much, the one thing that I have used all my life with happiness. Sure I now have the sittam pattern making system but I could also whip up an interesting extreme collar in the 60s onwards, make a python coat from skins and forever to now. I was an academic, sure, but the woman,y skills close to the heart so important. I respect the woman’s work in old embroidered tablecloths and so on. Understand the time and how it felt, the hopes and dreams. You pass on as a sewing teacher something core.
This is why I come here: Twitter screams for clothing manufacturers to include pockets. Morgan quietly takes her seam ripper and spreads sedition. 🙂
We can do both, you know?
@@discodiscordia Never said I wasn't in favour of screaming at clothing manufacturers in Twitter. I'd like them to stop charging an arm and leg once they get past size 12. Whether it's quality, pockets or sizing, we all have our issues with the garment industry. 🙂

The greedy selfish twits. ALL HAIL SEDITION!!!
Yeah i was gonna put something in my pocket once only to find out it’s a fake pocket
And most pockets in pants are so tiny that you can’t even fit your hands in it ☹️
Also, I'm reminded of a quote from Miss Marple, proving a certain woman could not have carried a murder weapon with her, which went something like: "I'm afraid those dresses young ladies wear nowadays don't leave room for carrying a handkerchief on you." Other than tightness, I guess the reason for the lack of pockets is that manufacturers just save on every little scrap of fabric, plus the assumption that women carry handbags anyway. Thank goodness for miracle-workers like Morgan the Fairy Queen, teaching us how to install pockets ourselves!

My daughter complains that even if her dress has pockets, she can't fit anything in them.
Hate it. Pockets in girls clothes are pretty darn useless. They're usually quite shallow. I am constantly losing coins & chapstick when I sit down. So very annoying. Usually wear a petite crossbody purse that can hold phone, wallet, comb & lipstick. If I take public transportation, I also take a tote that will hold a bottle of water & a book.
that's because pockets in women's clothing - those that even HAVE pockets, that is - fit like... half a cellphone. if you're lucky.
For me one of the dresses that I have dose not do well with weight, it ends up going down so I try to avoid that dress so that it doesn’t happen in public. I do agree with you daughter it like, why do things that I like to wear don’t have pockets since I don’t want to ask other people to hold my stuff when I should be able to carry them myself.

My absolute favourite pocket pattern are convent pockets - huge, deep, and doubled to sit together one on top of another, which gives you two hidden side pockets on either side and sewn into the waistline for extra strength. I’ve been known to carry books and full-sized bottles of wine in these pockets with no one knowing until I pull them out.
I love those heart-shaped pockets, so smart and cute.
I remember a few years ago, I bought 2 pairs of jeans for myself in a men's shop, and didn't check the pockets as I (a man) usually never have a problem with pockets. A few days later, when I had washed them and all that, I decided to put them on and go out, and when I tried to put my phone in my pocket, barely 2/3 parts of it could fit in. I was so confused and was like What is this sorcery!? lol I really like the fit of the jeans but those pockets drives me insane. I really need to get them fixed at some point. I really feel for you ladies whenever I wear those jeans. I don't get why tiny pockets is a thing. Large pockets should just be standart no matter if it's men's or women's clothing, end of story. lol

I'm delighted that you commented about how maintenance demonstrates love. This weekend I flipped wardrobes (like Uncle NickNack) and the time spent lint-rollering, ironing, mending, and putting items together for the coming seasons was so relaxing. Also, great to see old friends again. I don't have the space to have all my clothes together all at once, but it's much more fun to flip wardrobes twice a year and become reacquainted with them. I think it keeps me from spending more money on clothes because I don't see a bulk in a closet that becomes a mass of meaningless.

I always add pockets in the clothes I make! My favorite pattern designer has taken to making sure her newer patterns have pockets, and they're generously sized, too. I always laugh if the pocket pattern says "optional" because to me there is no such thing.
Some pockets though, add bulk to the hip/butt area (which some of us have plenty of already...) I'm happy with an option for pockets, or pockets that aren't right at the widest part of my figure to make it look even wider.

Love the “Yes, I could turn my iron down, but I won’t.” I worked in a drapery shop in college and the irons were always kept on the hottest setting. I now keep mine right up there as well and pretty much only make things from cotton or wool...
I love how on-brand even the wrapping paper that you use to draft the pocket pattern is. Yay polka dots!
I love this. So many gals make so much fuss about not having pockets. I'm over here going "Why did you buy clothes without them, or just put pockets in?' They do make women's jeans and skirts with pockets, every pair of jeans I've bought in the last 8 years have had nice big pockets. They are not as slim cut but they are comfy and I can carry my stuff. I either makes my skirts or buy vintage so I just put pockets in if they are something I would want a pocket on. I don't really bother with them as much since I have a really nice vintage purse collection I want to show off. For the most part just works skirts get them, or nice dresses that were planed from the ground up to have a pocket so it doesn't show.
This is such a great idea. It's a great way to use up smaller scraps of fabric you may have and to make your items more wearable. I love that you did big practical pockets! It's annoying to have garments without pockets but even worse to have tiny pockets that don't actually fit anything. Or fake pockets. Those make me extremely angry lol. The heart pockets are so amazing. I haven't seen anything quite like that before. They turned out super cute.

This is great! Now I want to add pockets to everything. Also the red dress with the heart pockets would make a really cool Queen of Hearts Disney Bound outfit!
Kat Cuseo I totally was thinking the same thing 🙌🏻
Thank you very much for this video! For ages I have been sewing my historical costumes without pockets because I just didn' dare to try. But now I have started to add pockets to all of them and the comfort has increased so much! Thank you!
11:53 I would seriously appreciate getting some ideas on lengthening skirts or even a video~
My first thought would be ruffles
Pockets are so important. I remember about 5 or so years ago when my cell phone was much much smaller and sturdier than the one I have now, when I could just slip it into the small pocket of my women's jeans... But as phones got bigger, pockets got smaller which makes absolutely no sense so now I want to extend all the pockets I have because okay in wintertime you wear a ton of layers and you have enough pockets, but if you think I'm going to carry my phone in my hand all summer long you're mistaken.
Yes. This is why I refuse to get a new phone (also because they’re expensive and they keep getting rid of the features I want, like the headphone jack)
The red dress with the heart pocket is my favorite! I was in love with it on your Instagram, seeing how you did it, now I want to try my own!
Maybe even with different shapes! Like a moon!
I feel like a half-moon shape would be a bit difficult to fit the hand through, but from my experience, these shape work: 4-leaf-clover, heart, 5-corner-star, triangle (tip upwards) and diamond.
"Why do you even watch me?"
I find watching people sewing and the creative work into making new clothes/enhancing current ones really soothing. I do not care that you make mistakes you have to correct :)
I made a circle skirt, without side seams cause I was lucky enough to find a wide enough fabric, and I haven't been able to figure out the best way to add pockets to her yet, I've been leaning welt, but those reverse applique/window pockets are stinking cute! I've also considered doing a cute shaped patch pocket. I have much to think about!
Edit: I did some googling for inspiration and I kinda want to do little kitty head shaped pockets! I forgot to mention I kind of a beginner... So this should be fun
Sew a mushroom on the hole as a patch on the holey dress. That'll be supper cute.
Those window pockets are so cool. I never would have thought of that and I love it. Why is that not more of a thing.
I just discovered your channel today and I am now inspired to take on this challenge myself. I have many garments with either no pockets or fake pockets which are just insulting to be quite honest. I think for any garment I sew, I will add in pockets were I can. Pockets are definitely something that can be taken for granted until you don't have them.
I really appreciate your remark about caring for your clothes. It helps with longevity and continued love of what you wear. I am also really loving the whole movement with visible mending. Seeing how people are turning mending into an art is really neat and inspiring within itself.
I feel like I’m commiserating with you watching you explain how you put the pocket in the front seam. Omgggggggg I’m always blasting through these projects and doing dumb shit like that. Thank you for reminding me you’re human like the rest of us. Also, you’re amazing and your videos literally taught me so much technique. ❤❤❤
The secret to the heart pockets!!! I’ve been perplexed by them since seeing them on Instagram!
How useful, this is why I’ve started making stuff again - pockets! I thought it was a bit of decoupage, a needle case, an entire late Edwardian wardrobe but no. It is for Sedition, Suffrage, Marvellous. Now if somebody can just point me in the direction of seditious leaflets I would be eternally grateful...🙏🏻🥰🥰🥰 Yes dogs, my old Border Collie says hello to all other dogs...and we both prefer leaflets in English - cheers m’dears.
This is fabulous! I didn't think it was possible to add pockets, and I do tend to not wear stuff without pockets. The red heart skirt is the most darling thing ever! Thank you for including your mistakes and how you puzzle things out, because perfection is off-putting.
The mask combined with the vintage/modern dress combo looks eerily dystopian and I'm living for it!!!!
I've thought of making an under petticoat with pockets to wear with my sundresses that are too stretchy to add pockets.
A very traditional option. Although they'd have the petticoat under the pockets that would hang from a waistband.
@@j.kaimori3848 that's where I got the idea. 👍
If you were happy with the length on the red-heart dress, and it’s just the lining being too long that’s the issue, I wonder if you could add cute black lace to the end of the lining and have that peaking out of the bottom of the red outer layer?
That might look really cute and save the effort and fabric to lengthen it.
My thoughts as well. Or maybe add a little gathered tulle to the lining to peek out from under the hem of the skirt like a faux petticoat or crinoline.
This is the video I come back and watch the most- so satisfying to see the different types of pockets and how they improve the garment!
I love you and feel that you are the Julia Child of sewing! Truly this is a compliment, Julia was #1 ❤️😃🙏🏼
Patches CAN be great. Several years ago I made a scrappy Christmas quilt top for my sister and handed it off to a friend with a new long arm machine to quilt. She ripped a hole in the backing during the quilting process and was devastated. I told her it was no big deal. I cut a circular patch with a tiny printed teddy bear centered on it. I stitched the patch on by hand with a blanket stitch. Voila! A design feature, no longer identifiable as a repair.
IF you decide to fix the flirty red dress, some beading could make the patch look like an intentional part of the design.
Great !!! The "Tartan"-pockets are just wonderful - I wouldn't have dared to cut slits into such a nice skirt ... actually, I always have a problem to start a sewing-project because I don't want to destroy the beautyful fabric by doing the first cut ... three pocket-skill-levels up plus 60 min. bonus sewing :-)
So much resonates with me here; pockets, cabbage patch utilisation, love heart motif pockets, having to lengthen skirts, video game references, moving on garments in preference for adjusting the temperature of your iron... I shall come here to worship each sabbath day, I feel.
These r just wonderful! More pockets. Who doesn't want them!❤❤
I've been adding pockets to the skirts & dress that I've been making ever since we had to stay at home due to covid-19. My boyfriend laughed at me (in a positive way) when I enthusiastically put my phone in one of the pockets, I just couldn't hold back the joy I felt to finally have some good sized pockets ! ^^
Also, thank you so much for linking the pattern for the cape! When I saw yours I was like: *must find a similar pattern* and already opened google to start my search
I have always been intimidated by the idea of adding pockets in my dresses and dress pants. But you're right. The more you do it, the better you get. I just have to start.
Saw thumbnail caption, immediately clicked. Saw the pinned comment, immediately subscribed.
I haven't even watched the video yet, but I know whoever supports better pockets on women and girl's clothing automatically gets my vote ♥️👌😆
I am currently in the hospital, but when I come home.... YOU HAVE MADE ME WANT TO MAKE ALL THE POCKETS!!! I ESPECIALLY LOVE THE HEART!!! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!! WE LOVE YOU MORGAN!!
The "M" stands for "melts".
Oh! If it were only that easy! I think it stands for " mysterious fabric of unknown content" ...lol!
Yay for pockets!! Also, those heart shaped pockets on the red dress are adorable. 😃
I am so glad to find someone else who is as obsessed with pockets as me. Its the reason I started sewing. I used to go to my grandma to sew pockets on all my pants.
Doesn't have a side seam, no problem! CUT CUT CUT! You're skilled and brave enough to slice right into the fabric of the dress itself! Looks amazing!
