MCASD Extended School Partnership (ESP) program presents Digital Showcases of student work from Altus Charter School of San Diego and San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts.
MCASD’s Extended School Partnership (ESP) program presents a shared digital showcase of student artwork from Altus Charter School of San Diego and San Diego School of Creative and Performing Art. Artworks students created are in response to their participation in virtual museum visits and activities led by Gallery Educatorswho facilitated broader experiences and lessons, making connections with the students’ class curricula. ESP Showcases are an opportunity for students to present their understanding of what they learned throughout the semester.
Students at both schools explored the MCASD Digital exhibition To Tame A Wild Tongue: Art After Chicanismo and analyzed the artist’s role as an activist. As we continue to grapple with the aftermath of the pandemic, social unrest demanding an end to systemic racism and abuses at the hands of those in power, high schoolers ask themselves how they can make a difference. Through thorough research on the labor practices of several multinational corporations, the products that many of the students consume or in the companies they work for, these budding artists created provocative artworks that invite us to be more thoughtful about the products we consume.
Lead by teachers Jeanette Brown and Carime De La Rosa, Altus Charter School of San Diego students jammed corporated logos and created product prototypes that address child labor, unfair compensation, and censorship.
t SDSCPA, art teacher Shauna Choi collaborated with MCASD Educator Norma Schwab to mentor students in the Painting and Mix Media class to explore new materials and incorporate ideas from their research into their work.
The students’ artwork is a good reminder that we all can be more critical of the products we consume and play an integral role in creating a more equitable and sustainable society.
