  • When you’re putting valves back together and it’s time to put the tablets back on the ends of the valves it can be a little tricky, I’ve made some special tools out of all PVC pipes that help me compress the springs so I can take the valve tablets stick them to a screwdriver using grease. When you have all the right tools the job goes together real nice and easy.

    00:13 people dont do this, those valve seals have ridges inside that hold onto the valve stem seat thats why he had a hard time pulling it out on 00:20, that one seal might have been compromised and probably might not be able to hold on after installation, valve stem seals come with plastic protectors they look like straws and you use those to cover the valve to protect the valve seal ridges when you want to install it through the valve.

      If you buy valve stem seals from supertech or tech tonics..they come in a bag...no plastic ID protector.Because they are quite tough...seeing 400-1100c EGT's in the combustion chamber.

    Don't put the pliers inside the valve guide; that's a sure way to make a new oil leak.

    Use oil to lube the seal so the valve stem doesn’t tear the inside seal.

    I bought a special tool for pulling out valve stem seals for $6 and it works great, I do not see any reason to use ordinary pliers for removing them because ordinary pliers suck at it.

      I have that tool, working great on inline engine, not so great on 90 degree V engine especially for the exhaust valve near the anti-fire wall, then ordinary pliers become useful, just need to be extra cautious.

    would this cause blue/white smoke coming out from the exhaust when coming down to a stop/ idle ? Also has a sweet smell to it. I replaced the head gasket thinking that was the issue.

    • @livefree6878
      @livefree6878  Před 4 lety

      If the seals go bad typically you will get quite a bit of smoke when you start the car in the morning after it’s been sitting all night. The oil from the top of the engine drips down these bad seals into the cylinder and then for about three or four minutes it will pass out blue white-ish smoke. Then the smoke stops and will not come back until the engine has time to rest and allow oil to drop back down the seals again. The smell should not be sweet, this smell of sweet comes from the antifreeze. Just out of curiosity did you do a compression test on the cylinders? The compression should be pretty consistent amongst all the cylinders.

      In order for the seals not to leak and last their longest you need tools and by looks of it a nail clipper is the number one tool needed here.

    Anyone have a idea why my car would burn so much oil? I have a 1.8t VW Jetta. If you check the exhaust pipe it’s black and sometimes smokes while sitting in neutral.

    • @lars6833
      @lars6833 Před 11 měsíci

      Since it smokes while sitting in neutral, it could be valve stem seals. One way to verify it is to set camera to film or have someone watch the exhaust pipe when you start the car after it has been sitting overnight. If it smokes a lot just after start and then settles, it's most likely valve stem seals. Since you can already see smoke while idling, another thing to do is have someone driving behind you to see if it smokes every time you start driving after stopping for a while e.g because of red light or a stop sign. Usually first symptom of worn valve stem seals will be smoking right after starting the engine, but when the wear gets worse it'll also smoke while engine is idling for a while, when you start moving after stopping for a moment or shift gears while driving. Also worn piston rings can cause smoking, but when they get bad enough it'll smoke all the time while driving, not only when you start the car, let it idle for a while or shift gears.

      Couldn’t agree more, I had the valve train tool and realized the outer of the three valves per cylinder the tool would work, but for but the center ones it was a non-starter. I had to modify hose clamp plier ends to wrap around at the angle needed and put silicone around the metal of plier as to not gouge the lifter bore.

    If you are going through the hassle of changing valve stem seals.. you should really buy the seal pliers.. with long nose you are bound to damage at least one valve guide.
    Oh and.. the straw thing for installing the seal comes with the deals SMH.

    Ouch it hurt to watch this. The valve guide should be replaced from putting your plyer inside of it and your seal is ripped from putting it on the valve like that. This is poor rebuild information.
