  • I picked up this 1965 Chevrolet BelAir 4 door post recently from a local farmstead. It's got a 230 inline six engine and 3 speed on the column manual transmission. It's was last registered in 1987. Lets see if we can get this thing to run after sitting for 35 years!! The current plans for this car is to diesel swap it in another video. If something changes and the car is available we'll post it up. As always, thanks for watching!

When I was in votech back in the '80s old wood hauler drove his truck up into our shop and said it was missing one of the cylinders in the old Dodge straight six and he pulled the busted piston and Rod out and replace the head and drove a piece of pine wood down in that cylinder to keep the gas from going in the oil and and drove it like that for years until his grandson wanted us to fix it.

This is 10,000% what I hope to find when I have time to take on a project. '65, post sedan, straight six, column 3 speed, rough everywhere. Hell of a score in the trunk, all those extras you get to keep for other revivals and rescues. I wonder if the previous owner knew the engine was going to go and was collecting bits to do a V8 swap, or if he had a Camaro he wanted to build and the Bel Air failed on the way back from the salvage yard.
Wonder if there's reprints of those radio/antenna installation diagrams or if you have some unique stuff that deserves scanning and uploading to the interwebs for 65 owners everywhere? Might be something dealer techs used back in the day and none got saved?
I'm pretty sure Clayton would survive driving to Oklahoma. I mean it's only a 950ish mile trip straight down 281, no interstate, no toll booths. 5 cylinders is enough. 3 doors is enough. None brakes is enough. Might have to do something about the exhaust. I can stop to add water and/or oil every hour or so. Tubes might outlast the casings though. Clutch might not be happy. But I think it'd make it given enough time and a healthy serving of luck. Pretty sure I'll miss out on this one but I'm gonna scavenge up some plain 14's and usable tires in case I find another or yours is still available later.

When I was a kid my parents had a matching pair of 1965 White Impala four doors, 283 automatics factory airconditioning. Gutless but cruisers. Great for all my teenage buddies to prowl around town in. Later I had a couple 1969/1971 Novas which I considered putting a diesel in. Putting a diesel in the Impala should not be too difficult considering the size of the engine bay.

In my junior year of college my roommate had a 1954 Chevy with the in-line 6. It spun a rod and having very little funds for repairs the local mechanic took out the offending piston and rod and as I remember clamped a piece of tin around the crankshaft to maintain oil pressure and we drove this 5 cylinder Chevy for the rest of the year. The fact was he bought the car from a friend of his brothers for $5 , it was brush painted black with a 6” bright green “racing” stripe. Also had a 6” log behind the front seats to keep them from tipping over backwards 👍😄🎩

But he kept all the maintenance up on it himself, even PM, changing oil whenever it should've been changed and everything else. Anywho, yeah, it was good car, at least when we had it. I had a 66' and it had the 230-6, 3 on the tree. Haha, hey that's what I've called my oldest daughter ever since she was little, Pookie.

One suggested origin of the term is that before modern navigational methods were introduced, cages of crows were kept upon ships and a bird would be released from the crow's nest when required to assist navigation, in the hope that it would fly directly towards land.
It was also attested from the early 19th century, and appeared in Charles Dickens's 1838 novel Oliver Twist:

That fine piece brings back some memories, a buddy's dad had a repair shop and was letting me use the lift to work on my junk. Had to make a bone yard run for parts and a kid working out of the back shop let me use his 65 with 6 banger to run down to the valley. He always told me how he never had to buy oil for it because he just used the drain oil from car services. Before I left for the parts he said just remember not to take your foot all the way off the accelerator when going down hill. Of course on the first big hill I forgot until I hit the bottom, stepped on the throttle and instantly could not see the road behind me through the cloud of blue smoke, good times.

👍 The expression as the crow flies is an idiom for the most direct path between two points, rather similar to "in a beeline". This meaning is attested from the early 19th century, and appeared in Charles Dickens's 1838 novel Oliver Twist:
We cut over the fields at the back with him between us - straight as the crow flies - through hedge and ditch. Got it from Wikipedia.

That trunk is like Christmas morning to guys like us. So many goodies. I'm a truck guy so I don't know what that car is worth but that is a great foundation for a restore or a perfect cruiser as is (my preference). I'd like to see what a buff would do to that paint.
BTW: I appreciate the support you showed to farmers. The following years are not going to be kind to them. It's a touchy subject with me so I'll end it there.

this is in really good shape, other then that holey piston, and that squatty trunk held a goldmine of parts. i'd say you got a bargain, but i don't know what you've got in it. the fact that it fired right up and ran pretty good, even with the super happy fun time blown out piston was the clincher, she's a runner!

Hiya mortske! My dad once had a 79 Pontiac lemans wagon v6. Would not pass emissions because of a wiped out cam lobe
number 5 cyl. I backed off on its rocker arms so both valves just remained closed and he not only sailed through inspection, but drove it 2 more years and claimed the gas mileage improved as a 5cyl! His nephew was annoyed with me because I didn't replace the camshaft. The car wasn't worth it!!!

Back in the day, all the kids used to make fun of the inline sixes. There are still a lot of them around and I think they are easier to get running than many of the V8s. Nice job. Too bad about the piston though. I bet someone dropped something in the plug hole when changing plugs(maybe).

Fond memories for sure. I remember the old man who lived across from us when I was a kid, had 1 just like this, same year, same color, but a 2dr. I myself owned 2 1965 Impalas, in the late 90's. A bright red 327 2dr, and a black 283 4dr, that I bought as a parts car for my 2dr. That maroon color was pretty popular in the 65 and 66 Impala, Biscayne, Belair. And if I am not mistaken, I believe that console may have been out of a 70-72 Camaro, with the horseshoe/staple shifter. 73-81 used the different slapstick shifter style. But it may even have been 1st generation Camaro console. And I wonder if old Clayton, didn't put a hole in that piston, after he tried pulling his Winnebago up 1 too many hills. Hence the custom tow mirrors. Thanks for the video

When I was much younger, my second car was a 65' Belair with a 283 and Powerglide. Served me well but then I sold it so I could get something better. Back then those were cheap beater cars. Still think of them that way. It was OK, nothing special, but it never let me down. The guy who bought it told me some time later that the frame broke in front of the right rear axle. It was tired when I sold it and then well, it became terminal.
