    86 is a GREAT car. Its one of the three new cars thats a reincarnation of the late 80s to early 00s Japanese sports cars. I had a chance to buy a new S2000 CR back around 2006. I test drove it and didnt like it. The 86 is a much more fun car to me, as it has more torque, is easier to stick and manage the tail out, is much safer and stiffer body and forgiving. The S2000 needs to be driven at the ragged edge to be fun, near redline and pushing it. Its also really snappy and the steering sucks. The shifter is nice (MX5 shifter is nearly as good) and the engine has the nice cam switchover (vtech) but thats about it.
    I have an ND3 MX5 on order as I think its a good blend of S2000 and 86, and has the best steering compared to 86 and S2000. However, the 86 is a much better all rounder vs the compromised MX5 and a better choice if you dont have a second practical car.
    The oil issue was totally overblown based on a few early complaints (which were fair). There are 86 racing everyday, including in cup series. CZcams infuencers then jumped on the bandwagon to drive up views by spreading panic. There are rumors that the panic also led to a bunch of folks buying up 86 in a panic sale vs being forced to wait, esp in EU and UK where there was a allocation sold out. Lol😂
    A mild overfill and 5w30 oil and reported issues have stopped for over a year.

    I have a ‘23 GR86 and have had it for just over a year. I’m sitting at 16K miles and I have not had any issues with the car yet outside of a battery that failed on me recently (likely my own doing as I left my hazards on all day one day and that drained the battery…), but was quickly replaced by Toyota as it was within my warranty period. I’ve done an axel back exhaust from Remark and a Perrin cold air intake combined with a Post-MAF hose from Grimmspeed. That combination has made a noticeable improvement in intake sound, a nicer exhaust note, and mayyyyybe a small bump in HP and Torque. I’ve done a bunch of other cosmetic/aesthetic upgrades, but putting my car on some lowering springs and some nicer 18” wheels from Enkei has improved the look and feel of the car a lot as well. I plan on swapping out my headers to UEL headers from Tomei and then doing a tune once I get that modification done as I have read that is a nice way to go for a noticeable improvement in HP and Torque for those that have done it. I don’t want to turbo my car, fyi. I have also noticed that sluggishness with this car on hot days. I live in Phoenix, and so in the middle of Summer this car definitely lacks some “oomph” that it has on cooler days, but that is to be expected as the air density is much lower on extremely warm days, meaning less pressure pushing oxygen into that NA 4-cylinder. I am hoping a tune and UEL headers will give it a nice bump in power so that it doesn’t feel quite as sluggish in the hot summer months.
    Overall, I absolutely love this car and wouldn’t trade it in or sell it for anything! This is my first foray into sports cars and modifying in general, and it has been a blast to tinker on the car and feel it change and improve over time.

      @Gonin60  Před měsícem

      Great comment and insights here! I hear you on the sluggishness on hot days but like you I also understand why it happens. I could be wrong but I heard UEL headers steals some horsepower from the car. Idk

    I was surprised to see this video, Austin. When you first had the car it seemed like you "liked" it, but didn't "love" it, and I thought your RX-8 was the car you most regretted getting rid of. You know I definitely agree with you on the love for lightweight sports cars (it's why I sold my Camaro to get back into an MX-5), so if you're really missing it I say go ahead and get another one if it makes sense for you financially.

    I have a '22 86, still totally stock. Havent felt the need to modify it for more power, I didn't buy it for that. Currently at a little over 23k miles. It's my daily, and my hope is to basically keep it. At some point I do want a manual Supra beside it, but I can't envision wanting to sell it.

  • @vando1267
    @vando1267 Před měsícem +2

    Currently have a ‘23 BRZ at about 4K miles and had ‘13 FRS supercharged with Edelbrock in the past. To answer your first question, my ‘23 BRZ isn’t tuned, but I installed a 4.30 diff from a ‘19 86 TRD + pedal commander. With those two mods, the BRZ feels plenty quick and I don’t feel the need to tune or add boost. Regarding the audio, I’ve installed the Beat-Sonic DSP and will install the a sub this weekend. One thing to keep in mind is that the stock head unit controls the adaptive head lights so if you update to an aftermarket head unit, you will lose that feature. I’m not aware if there’s an aftermarket solution to retain the adaptive headlights yet.

    Ill go further, the 86, MX5 and Lotus Emira are the most fun street cars out there, period. The first two are the lightest offerings on the market. A Porsche Boxster GTS for example feels heavy, closed in and has horrible gearing to make it fun on the street.

    Totally depends on what you get into after you sell it.. get into a mid-engine Porsche and you'll forget the 86 real quick, lol.
    If you have to compromise and only have 1 vehicle, the new twins are good (my biggest complaint is the Logitech clutch pedal)..
    Ive owned a ton of compromise vehicles.. mainly hot hatches and hot sedans.. Now.. i have a mutli-car garage.. So far.. ND1 Miata Club w/BnB and a FiST.. seeking to add something musclely and maybe something with awd down the road..

  • @thullraven1
    @thullraven1 Před měsícem +1

    The twins are ALMOST identical but not quite. The stock suspension is a little better on the BRZ from what I heard. Both have a Subaru engine anyway, so you might as well just get the Subaru version. Oh, grippy tires make a lot of difference on cars like this. I run with BF Goodrich Comp 2 A/S W Speed tires on my Mustang. They grip like Spider-Man. 🙂

      Rt is a great car and fun punchy motor but you will find wanting more power. BRZ is fun to rev out.

    Easy Peezy get rid of the golf R and get yourself a new GR 86 again, maybe a premium trim, put some coils on it Nice rims nice exhaust have some fun with it. You can tune the car to have a bit more juice in it and the get rid of that power surges on it. With all the cars you have you can easily afford it and again you’ll have more fun in it then you will in the golf R. I’ve worked in the automotive world for 25 years. I wouldn’t touch a German car with a 10 foot pole. I don’t care what it is. They’re all garbage after a few years. Too many problems too many issues, perfect example on the golf R no knobs everything is electronic you have to jump through different hoops to get to where you need to be for simple stuff like climate system settings…..ridiculous!!!
