  • In this video I share what bare-root roses are as well as why I think you should be buying them. I also share my opinion on what to look for when looking to purchase them. The rose featured in this video is Moonlight In Paris, which I purchased from Walmart.

    Great video!
    I live in Calgary AB Canada
    Love tea roses but zone 4ish means you have to do some winter protection if you plant outside. Instead, I bought 5 @ Walmart and put them in 14 inch pots. Think the roses were $12.99 so a bargain even if they only lasted the summer.
    Fertilizer was miracle grow for roses. They were stunning!
    Mr Lincoln, 2 kinds of Peace,
    Chrysler Imperial, Tropicana.
    Cut them down to about 10 inches before Halloween and put them in the garage, putting some snow on them a few times. March 18 & they are budding. I’ll be sliding them out for sunshine soon.
    I have a Chicago fig that’s 5 feet tall and 3 Japanese maples that are all more than 5 years old all doing well with the pot in garage treatment.
    Well worth the effort but watch out for aphids & powdery mildew on the roses later in summer. Aphids didn’t survive my fingers or soap spray and I got some neem oil from Amazon to dilute & spray for the mildew. Need to be more proactive to stem that.
    Going for another 5 or so when spring arrives. They’re addictive!
    Mike

      I agree that they definitely are addictive and I think well worth the price!
      I am in zone 7 so thankfully don’t have to worry so much about winter protection. I mostly just mulch heavily at the base.
      I love hearing gardeners experiences in different growing conditions than mine as I think challenges present themselves in different climates.
      Thank you for the watch and comment, best wishes in your garden this year!

      The BEST is from SAMS CLUB. I should say variety. They have long stem, large bloom, exceptionally fragrant roses. I love Tiffany’s, jfk’s, Chrysler imperials, and for the first time in my life found the MOONLIGHT IN PARIS ROSE. They’re about 12 bucks at Sam’s, but they’re higher end roses. Now searching for a double delight and Chicago Peace rose. Those both are also long stems and have enormous blooms, up to 6 1/2 inches and long lasting.

    I use liquid fertilizer, and I soak my bare roots for 12 hours in the water and fertilizer mix. I put the bucket with the roses soaking in the sunlight, in the garden. The roots get a good drink, the plant feeds on the sunlight, and they get acquainted with their new home. Soaking the roots makes a huge difference and boots blooms. I have blooms in as little as a couple of months (but I also live in Florida)

    A couple years ago I bought six roses in a bag of them from Ollie’s Outlet. They died. Every single one of them. They were $4.99 each. The price lured me in. I bought a Joseph’s Coat rose from Walmart and it lived for two years. It never got big which I thought was strange. I had to dig it up recently due to Rose Rosette Disease. I tend to get black spot often due to the humidity. I stay on top of it as best I can. I can’t say if I prefer one over the other. They all them perform well. I fertilize them well to keep them happy. I just received a DA climbing rose (Generous Gardener) bare root. Will take a while to know how that rose performs. Two roses I bought on clearance at my local nursery (Tranquility and Golden Celebration). They were a lucky find.

      What kind of soil did you use? I plant mine in cow manure which I mix with the natural surrounding soil. The manure conditions the existing dirt so it can absorb the water. Also, I recommend soaking the roots for at least 12 hours in a liquid fertilizer (I use miracle grow rose food, one scoop turns two gallons of water into liquid fertilizer). Put the bucket in the sunlight. Believe me you will have an exceptional rose. I’ve been growing roses for decades and so did my mom and grandmother, and the bare root roses are WAY better than the ones you buy in the buckets. Also one more thing, sometimes people accidentally bury the root ball, that suffocates the rose. Bad dirt that doesn’t absorb water also starves it.

    Can these bare root roses produce hips? I've been trying to research the company Expert Gardener in the video, the same roses I have, but I can't find any useful information. My plant is doing great with blooms and it seems to attract pollinators, so the other option for why it's not producing hips is because it's genetically modified.

    • @thegrace-filledgarden
      @thegrace-filledgarden  Před rokem

      They definitely can! Will depend on the breed you have as some have been bred to sort of “self clean” which would kind of naturally dead head where a hip would form. Some roses take several months for a hip to form from where a bloom was, even into the fall. How long has it been since it has started blooming?

    • @se0271
      @se0271 Před rokem

      @@thegrace-filledgarden It started producing buds for blooming maybe 5 or 6 months ago. The thing is I've never waited long enough to see if anything develops from a dead bloom, so I will do that the next time I get one. I just prune all the dead blooms I have, like I did today which was a mistake, so I guess I need to wait until the cycle starts again! Hopefully I get some rosehips but if the blooms fall off on their own, the rose may not be built to produce them.
