    Thank you for the education on bare root roses. One of the reasons for grafting primarily is because the root stock is more resistant to soil born disease. Many hybrid rose varieties have roots that are susceptible but by grafting to a strong root stock they are less likely to fail from soil born diseases.

    I planted 5 bare root roses into the ground on Tuesday 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 a red a pink a yellow a peach and a white they are hybrid tea roses I bought from Amazon £16.99 for a set of 5 absolute bargain - they all had really good roots and I did soak them for about 30 minutes 😀 I can't wait to see how they grow 🌿🌹🌿 I already have 2 which my daughter bought me in pots - I tranplanted one into the ground in autumn and it's almost grown another foot already - and a beautiful white climbing rose which I bought from Poundland for £1 about 8 years ago which I've just attached to an arch 🌹

    I would like to add that if planting in a pot the rose should be two zones cold hardier than your zone. Something us colder zones must consider. We also have to plant our graft two inches below ground level for winter hardiness. If the top growth is killed off from winterkill it will grow back from the root. Own root roses are also better in a cold zone. Bonny zone 5b Canada

    • @shesamadgardener
      @shesamadgardener  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yes, someone else said I should go back and bury the grafted area two inches below the soil to protect it from cold weather. It’s amazing how different planting own root is from planting grafted.

    Hi,
    Watched your video and was very interested and have subscribed. I have had roses in the past. Some I purchased in pots from Home Depot or Lowe's and also from a rose grower. I hand little luck since I live in zone 11 south Florida. I have one that I purch as a bare root, not grafted and is still thriving in the garden. The other is a Knock Out Rose which is still alive too not a bare root purch... I have very sandy soil in Fla. (In ground) and wondered what to do to make them grow better. It gets very hot here in summer.

    • @shesamadgardener
      @shesamadgardener  Před 4 měsíci

    Do you have to take all of the dirt off the roots and soak them? All we did was take paper off and keep them in the soil they came with, adding compost and native soil. We also added mulch. We have thick brown stems from the get-go-no green at all. So I’m assuming they are dead? :(

    As someone who grew up and has grown beautiful roses near Galveston. I can tell you you will have to amend your soil at the site where you're going to plant your roses. Also, because of the humidity, you will HAVE to do preventative spraying with a fungicide (I use potassium bicarbonate) to prevent black spot. Plant your roses where they get morning sun and light shade in the afternoon. Be sure to deadhead any spent blooms. Fertilize every 4-6 weeks with Rosetone and a half strength gallon of fish emulsion every 2 wks (the fish emulsion is just because I get glossier foliage and full blooms. Rose-tone and fish emulsion are both organic. Watch out fir the Japanese Beetles and especially aphids on new growth. You can spray the aphids off w/a strong stream from your garden hose. The potassium bicarbonate is the ONLY fungicide that will actually kill black spot and powdery mildew as well as prevent it. You'll have to buy the Potassium bicarbonate online. (Neem oil burns the leaves on my roses). NEVER spray anything on your roses in the heat of the day and try to water at ground level. Mulch well to keep the soil cool. I know it sounds like a lot of work but, it's really not.😊

      I forgot to add that Tha Antique Rose Emporium near Brenham, TX has a 1yr guarantee on their roses too AND their ALL own root (meaning NOT grafted) which IMO are stronger and better roses. If they freeze back to the ground, they come back from new growth beneath the soil level as the same rose. Grafted roses don't, they come back as whatever the rootstock is.

    Does anyone know if any of these are reblooming or do they just have one flush?

    I have not had luck with Walmart roses. They're never what theyre advertising. I got 5 different peach colored roses. 1 was a peach color. The other 4 were completely different. Id go with the ones that cost a few more bucks then get the expert gardener again. I got one that was supposed to be peaceful joey and was a primrose. None of them where even labeled or supposed to primrose.... wasnt my style at all. Best of luck 🤣most of them were still pretty just not what they were supposed to be.

    I bought the expensive grafted ones and after a year, my expensive 4 of them turned out to ugly red/maroon/ burnt red flowers. Last one was lady Hamilton, with orangish flowers and turned out to be ugly red. I was heart broken. You can’t buy anymore Lady Hamilton.

    Good morning, I love bare root rose’s season, your grafted roses are planted way too high, the graft union should be buried at least 2 inches below soil level; to protect the union in a freeze and to avoid the rose rocking back and forth, also it’s not recommended to use fertilizer on a bare root the young roots that will develop will burn. It’s only recommend to use liquid fertilizer for the 1st year. Hope this help in your new rose endeavors to give your babies the best start. Happy growing 😊 czcams.com/video/5JsSb2cmWYc/video.htmlsi=QQFpFKMGSYSXLiV6

      @@shesamadgardener No problem, I found out the hard way, one of my David Austin Eustasia Vye was damaged from rocking once the foliage developed, I took pictures and videos sent them to DA, to find out they were planted below the union. Thankfully, DA has amazing customer care, they replaced her and sent me the video I shared! Think I’ll go to Walmart and try their Peace you showed ❤️🌹

    Yay I’m a hybrid tea rose lover! Your gonna love these. I love florabundas too, but I tend to pick off many buds then and let 2, 3 or 4 blooms have enough space and there time to shine. :D
