Thanks for this comparison! I own the 22mm and absolutely LOVE how compact it is, so with its performance being so comparable to the 23mm, I think I'll keep the 22 and await a lens that would bring significant improvement to my setup. Thanks again! :)

I have a few thoughts on some lens reviews. First off I think knowing the minimum focus distance for a lens and how the lens autofocus works close in or further away is useful. Also moving closer and further away wide open makes shots look out of focus because the focus system is constantly trying to lock on. This would be amplified if you are closer to the lens. I think that is where the newer Canon cameras updated focus systems have made improvements. A couple of things that may have affected the results of this comparison were as you stated the 22 was dropped and may not be a good representation of this lens and did the lenses and camera have the latest firmware updates?

Thank you for the comparison video!
I've been impatiently awaiting the EF-M mount Viltrox 23mm lens for six months and was very happy to hear it was finally being released (about a year after the e-mount and X-mount versions).
Background: I picked up an M5 half a year ago and have been using it only with a small kit of manual focus primes, including the Rokinon 21mm f/1.4. That's been a good lens, but I was missing some shots due to the lack of AF, especially with this moderate wide focal length and my short portrait 50(ish)mm. So I started looking for lenses with AF around these focal lengths and was pleased to discover the Viltrox 23mm and 56mm were in the works.
Then the lenses came out... Well, I just bought the Canon 22mm and will be buying the Sigma 56mm soon. Why? Because for some reason Viltrox decided to paint their EF-M lenses SILVER. That was a deal killer for me.
Explanation: I'm not a vlogger. I bought the M5 for street photography. I bought it as a small, unassuming camera that wouldn't intimidate or attract attention. I bought it as an alternative to several big DSLRs wirh battery grips and hefty, fast pro lenses that scream "I'm taking your picture." I use those cameras and lenses to shoot events, sports and wildlife. I bought the M5 to look more "touristy", so that subjects on the street will be more inclined to ignore me. Unless I need the DSLRs for a specific purpose, I'll likely also use the M5 and lenses for travel, when we can do that again.
While I'd prefer a stop larger aperture and better build quality the Viltrox offers, the last thing I want is a lens that stands out on the black camera body. So I got the black Canon lens instead. And I'll be getting the black Sigma 56mm eventually, too...
That is, unless Viltrox starts to offer the 23mm and 56mm in black, too (or perhaps if I get an M6 II body in silver). Viltrox say they plan to offer in black, but I'm not waiting again. It took an extra year for them to release the lenses in EF-M mount. Will it take another year until they offer black versions of them? Will they ever get around to doing so, if the M-series is phased out by Canon? Who knows, I might be shooting with an R-series in a year or two.
My objection to the color of the lens may seem silly to some people and I'm sure isn't a concern for many. Overall, between the Viltrox lenses for EF-M and the Sigma DN trinity, I'm just glad to see someone giving the M-series the attention Canon hasn't for eight plus years! More of the same would be great, but I'm not holding my breath.
Thanks for the video and your efforts to compare these two lenses. Very helpful.
    Cheers!

    • @ricetheories
      @ricetheories Před 3 lety +1

I'm considering the M50 and the size of the 22mm is one thing that makes it hard for me to choose... Might still end up going for the 1.4 though. For an affordable telephoto zoom I'd recommend the EF-S 55-250mm f4.5-5.6 STM if you have the adapter - it's a very sharp lens for its price and has 50mm extra reach than the EF-M 55-200mm f4.5-6.3 and also brighter aperture of f5.6 at 250mm. Good prices used too.

For photography the 22mm is the clear winner and I use it a lot for landscape. I haven’t tried the Viltrox but I’d welcome any gain in light for both video and photography in low light. I just can’t justify getting that because of its focal length which isn’t a priority for what I want to do.

    • @TheCrowleyCrew

I like you video man and I really trust you over many other youtubers, that's why I was keen to ask you.
Thanks for getting back to me, you're a great fella

@@johnsmalldridge6356 thanks John for explaining, I totally understand , it doesn't both me but indeed it makes me happy to get his opinion, we look high at him, even knowing how busy he gets, you still do your effort, wait till he's there uploading and trying to catch his attention.
Every single gear I have, it was kinda because of a video Job made (including my camera), that's how we like, trust and appreciate his work..
Good luck to him, indeed he is a great man.

Small CZcams channels are on a tight budget and not having to pay for music helps.
