  • In this video I am out with a Family Dairy Farm in Western Ohio in early June 22 as they are working on first cutting hay. They are mowing, raking and chopping the hay and putting it in one of their silos where it will be stored to feed their Dairy Cow Herd.
    Lots of action in this video and if you are a Massey Ferguson tractor fan you will like this video. There is 5 different Massey Ferguson tractors in this video being used to get the job done
    Massey Ferguson 8660 Tractor pulling Hesston 1372 mower conditioner
    Massey Ferguson 5475 tractor pulling a Kuhn GA7932 rotary rake
    Massey Ferguson 8732 pulling a Dion 2430 forage harvester with H&S HD Twin Auger Forage Boxes
    Massey Ferguson 6616 Tractor pulling wagons from the field to the farm
    Massey Ferguson 7495 tractor hooked to a Dion Forage Blower at the silo
    Massey Ferguson 285 tractor unloading the wagons at the silos
    This young men at this farm have their own CZcams channel ‪@dairybros8656‬

    When I was a kid, my Dad had a MF 1135 chopping w/ Hesston forage harvester, Gehl chopper boxes, we had a New Idea blower which we used our MF 265 on, we pulled the wagons back & forth with our Case 830 & rented our neighbors Oliver 1655. When I pulled in with one tractor & loaded wagon, I would leave with the other & empty wagon. My Mom did the chopping and my Dad did the unloading. I did the roading. No A/C or a roof, just the breeze & a hat.

    I remember when my dad worked on the farm in the 80s they had the pickup systems but the trailer had the unload system at the back. So when trucks came to the field he would pull under the shuttle system at the back and that's how they unloaded.

    Nice video Mike, interesting you call that hay - we call it silage in the UK. I think the harvester could have done with a higher gear or two!

    • @Ghis1964s
      @Ghis1964s Před 2 lety

      High winds and half-dry hay is a bad combo. Windrows always get thrown off sideways and the only way to get it all is to slow down... raking it again would brake the leafs and everything would end-up as "stick silage" ;)

    Nice video.
    Just think about how much labor, machinery and infrastructure that could be saved by having a milking robot on a semi-trailer together with power supply and milk tank, that you could take out to the pasture. The cows could then forage on their own and not live on concrete with poop on top. I think I would like the milk and beef coming from such a setup much more.

    • @joakrage3972

      In the uk there is such a milking robot but there is too few places it could be used successfully in the states year round for it for ot to be marketed there

    This is great work Mike. Are the young men you introduced us to operating the tractors and equipment? It would be nice to see them in action. They sure have a great looking farm. How much hay does each of the silos hold? What is their height?

    • @farmhandmike
      @farmhandmike  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes they were. One was running the mower and hauling wagons. The other was running the rake. I don’t think the youngest on was running anything in the video. I’m guessing those are 80 foot silo’s.

    What is that tank on bar of the chopper for? Every time a have a question and get ready for making a comment you usually cut to closeup and answer it. This time looks like that tank is empty therefore no closeup.
    Thanks for sharing 👍. Happy subscriber 😊.

    • @farmhandmike
      @farmhandmike  Před 2 lety +1

      Most likely that tank is to carry water. In certain conditions the water will prevent gumming in the blower area of the chopper.

    Is that an 8732 or an 8732S? I didn't see the S in the model designation on the side of the tractor, but am not sure if they actually put the S next to the model number or not. I love the looks of MF tractors.

    Some dairies feed corn silage and this dairy feeds hay silage (haylage). Is there a difference, or just the dairy farmer's preference?
