  • Corn Silage Harvest 2021 at Trackside Farms
    In this video I am out in the field with Wuertemberger Chopping out of Richmond Indiana as they custom chop corn for this farm near Versailles Ohio. In this video there is several ground and aerial shots of all the action through the course of a day as they chop the corn in the field and haul it back to the silage pile at the farm and push and pack the silage where it will be stored and fed to the farms dairy herd through the next year.

    I was on a 5 day fishing trip when the corn was taken off at this farm. I thought I had missed the action, but not so when I found this video. I should have known you would be there. I live to the west of the farm, a few houses south of the railroad, so I get see a lot of farming at Trackside farm.

    Hi
    I love these videos. As an IT engineer. I have a question.
    Why they are chopping the corn? Isn't that corn good for picking ( _human consuming_ ) ? Is something that needs to be done due season time?

    • @deancook6832

      That corn is not used for human consumption. It is grown and chopped to feed cattle.

      The varieties (hybrids) of corn used to feed dairy cows are specifically developed to be chopped green and maximize the feed value of kernels, stalk, and leaves. The forage harvester contains a high speed rotating drum holding many blades to chop the plants into small pieces. The harvester also sends the plants between a set of rollers to crack the corn kernels into pieces. The kernels are hard field corn.

      @@markam306 wow that's amazing! Last month I started develop interest on farming videos. Due to the fact that the MLB had a game (Chicago White Sox vs. New York Yankees) at the Field of Dreams (Dyersville, Iowa). Corn field are so beautiful. This type of videos are so relaxing. I am a young man (29 years old) and I love watching this content. That connection with Nature.
      PS: When I was a child (around age 7) I used to play a game (Cruis'n' USA) In that game there are two races. One in Iowa and one in Indiana both races are on a two lane highway with corn fields and barns at the sides, I never understood the connections until now.

      I’ve been hooked on agriculture videos for several years now. It started with the channels that feature equipment ‘bigtractorpower’ and ‘Mike Less’. Branched out into the videos where a farmer or farm family carries the camera around to show you his work day. Took me a while to put my finger on the ‘magic’ of these videos. Finally realized that unlike regular television, these are real people doing real work. Every channel has their own style which I appreciate.
      A word of advice, you may want to avoid monkey videos from Cambodia and Hong Kong. That’s a whole ‘nother addiction.

    • @farmhandmike

      Most dairy farms no longer graze these days. They are fed a total mixed ration instead.

    • @PeggyStentzCasey
      @PeggyStentzCasey Před 2 lety

      @@farmhandmike I think that is very sad and puts me off milk. In England there are still family dairy farms and to see how happy the cows are to be released in Spring to graze happily in the sun is wonderful. They move them about to different fields and then harvest grass for silage. Our farms have gotten too big.
