    On April 5th, the Orsk dam in Southwest Russia collapsed resulting in massive flooding all across the region. The authorities' response was little more than a call to the citizens to evacuate. There is also an eyebrow raising theory of what caused the Orsk dam to fail that was posited by the dam's head of construction. Find out more from our explainer video.

    You guys do great work. The following suggestion is meant as informational only, hardly a criticism. You seem to be using the word “dam” when the better colloquial word in American English might be levee, dyke, dike (?), or embankment. The shores of the Mississippi River are lined with hundreds (several thousand ?) miles of levees to control flooding, particularly spring flooding, for example. Embankment might be used for less extended control systems, but there is no hard and fast rule. Say “dyke” and I think of the little Dutch boy, but the word communicates just fine.. there may be other synonyms, but “dam” usually would not be have the same meaning of “embankment” along river/stream bank meaning.
    A “dam” almost always means a structure ACROSS a river or stream current (not parallel) creating reservoir or impoundment. Flood control is often a major reason to build a dam, along with electric generation and irrigation.
    Obviously if a “dam” erodes through and breaks, releasing an over-full reservoir, the results could be catastrophic. And I am sure this must be happening right now also. But the clips I have seem have been breeches in levees or embankments. Therefore it has taken me a few seconds full stop to process what I am seeing along with the words I am hearing.
    By the way, in US history, both types of breeches have been catastrophic, but in some ways, the breeches in dykes and levees have been more catastrophic, some times flooding thousands of square miles or, in New Orleans killing over a thousand persons. In the latter case, the incompetent management of Bush II of FEMA and rescue operation played a great role in subsequent loss of political office.

    • @andyhurrell
      @andyhurrell Před 24 dny

      Yes, but I understand that there was a dam that collapsed initially and the ensuing chaotic rush of water ruptured the embankments downstream. The dam and the embankments appear to be made only out of compressed earth: whoops . . .

    • @Comm.DavidPorter
      @Comm.DavidPorter Před 24 dny

      Dike, not "dyke." "Breaches," not "breeches." And as for "incompetence," the government of the city of New Orleans had a LOT more to do with the death toll from Hurricane Katrina than anything FEMA or Pres. Bush did. FEMA has only limited powers. It was not responsible for blocking exits from the city, as New Orleans did. Nor was it responsible for the upkeep of the levees that could have kept New Orleans dry if they had been maintained just a bit better.

    • @halporter9
      @halporter9 Před 20 dny

      @andyhurrell No. Speaking of Katrina, there was no dam collapse that contributed/caused the levee collapse. You are basically correct about the construction of the levee, but there was a little more reinforcement. Lack of maintenance and funding over years set up the breeches after Katrina blew through. Water was also funneling through a ship channel that contributed to the undermining. All of this was predicted at a major professional conference focusing on the lower Mississippi flood prevention systems held about 6 months before Katrina, amply reported in Scientific American among others. Warnings years earlier that maintenance desperately needed. Army Corps of Engineers or any local authorities did nothing, nor did FEMA prepare any emergency response measures in advance. Federal funding for maintenance had long been cut/ and deferred. Nor were independent power supplies for huge drainage pumps operated as a matter of course installed, and power failed. Evacuation plans were effectively non existent, and new political appointees at FEMA were worthless and frozen in improvising and implementing a coordinated relief response. After days of leaderless chaos an Army general was put in charge. All of this, is where the comparison with Russia is relevant. There are differences and similarities, especially with the Bush administration cutting services while cutting taxes, mainly for the rich, while beginning and fighting an unnecessary war, paid for by budget deficits.
