Post Shahpur Kandi Dam Completion, India To Fully Utilize Ravi River Water | Will Benefit J&K

- After the completion of the Shahpur Kandi dam, India has stopped the flow of Ravi River water to Pakistan. As per the Indus Water Treaty signed in 1960, India will now retain 1,150 cusecs of water previously directed to Pakistan. This water will be used for irrigation purposes in the Kathua and Samba districts of Jammu and Kashmir, benefiting over 32,000 hectares of land. The treaty was designed to ensure fair distribution of water between India and Pakistan. To learn more about the benefits of the Ravi River water for India, please watch the attached video.

Many wars have been fought over water. Just last month Afghanistan - Iran were in dispute over water flows. I wish the best on the rivers allocation to both nations.
Tunnels through Pir Panjal Range is very badly needed to bring water from the Kashmir valley South to the plains of Punjab, Haryana and to Rajasthan.
Two 20mt tunnels cutting through the Mountain range dividing Kashmir and Jammu will help transfer enormous amounts of water to feed India for generations.
I don't think that should be done, it will increase resentment and hostility in Kashmir Valley when the pro India sentiment is at its relative highest in decades. Instead, Kashmiri farmers have been requesting India to break the Indus Water Treaty and allow Kashmiris to use the Jhelum water for their own irrigation and farming. With this move, India could build a damn on the Jhelum and ironically make Kashmiris and Pakistan lock horns against each other, since Pakistan wants that water for Punjabi farmers.
@@xijinpig8982 Kashmir valley has already FAR more water than it can store. Any farming needs Kashmiris have can be met with run-of-river water projects on the three western rivers as well as per the IWT.
No, the objective should be to bring the water south of the Pir Panjal ranges so water stressed regions in Punjab, Haryana and Northern Rajasthan can also benefit. As it is after current dams bring full utilization of Eastern rivers under IWT - where will India be able to store more water in the small area of the Kashmir valley? Only solution is moving the water south! That way IF the IWT is scrapped water from Jhelum, can be dam,ed and sent south.
China has done such projects where they have built 1000km long tunnels to pump water from South to North in China for industrial and agricultural use.

There's should be a consideration for downstream nations when it comes to dams. I.e. let them fill for Indias use then the overflow goes to Pakistan. Its like Ethiopa and Egypt with the Nile.

People living downstream has a right to the water, while we use it to generate power and irrigate, we need to make sure that we don't leave people without water. It is common man that gets affected and not politicians.
Indian states like Maharashtra, Rajasthan are in dire need of water. It is our right and mentioned in INDUS WATER VALLEY TREATY THAT WE CAN USE RAVI FOR US.
