- Hi guys, Dad here. Get The MasterSmith's Toolkit Today. It's a downloadable PDF that brings together all the tools and materials Mastersmith Kyle Royer uses for knifemaking in one convenient place. It's Free if you click here: www.learnknifemaking.com/mast...
I'm (dad) tackling my second JS test knife. It's been a while since I worked with single carbon knives, but the judges require it for this Journeymen test knife.
I start by tapering the tang using a surface grinder, then move on to the plunge grind and blade edge geometry. The convex edge requires precision and patience to perfect.
When it comes to the handle, I use Honduran Rosewood burl for the scales and incorporate brass inserts for both aesthetics and functionality.
After securing the handle with pins and epoxy, I move on to sharpening, aiming for that hair-popping edge we all love.
The end result is a knife I'm really proud of. The tapered tang and overall craftsmanship make it stand out. Thanks for watching, and until next time, may the forge be with you!

As a forgesmith ( retired) and I was very good at it but with thousands or tens of thousands of lbs of steel I can say watching you is almost the same as I used to do . Very familiar if the masters aren’t in awe of your work I want to see theirs. You sir impress the hell out of me.
So Kyle is the king of these videos and then he gives us dad! Dad is always better somehow.... Cheers to dad!
Love that tapered tang and the grain in the wood handle is beautiful.
Hope the JS judges like it as much as I do.
It's a beauty, Dad!!!
I can't believe you're still working towards Journeyman! I can't imagine what makes a Master.
@@borrago Lol "very specific Dagger" is a little underwhelming. To be clear the 300 layer minimum Damascus Pattern, Fluted handle, with twisted wire inlay, art knife is a feat that few in the world accomplish. Less than 200 people in the WORLD hold that title.
Kyle is a master. So… that.
No doubt, Rojer Senior is plenty good enough to be a JS - but he has to do the test(s) and apply for the titel to get it. Becoming a Master Smith like Junior is probably no problem either, "just" has to do the work and have it examined by the proper authority to gain the title 👍
Good luck!!! Say hey to Kyle & you guys have a great weekend...
Very cool to see your Dad at work. I've seen short clips of him in other videos but it's nice to see an entire episode dedicated to him. The skill runs in the family!
You knocked that one out of the park.
All I can say is GOOD LUCK with your test
I love Watching this talented family
Well done sir
Excited to see the JM initial on your next project pretty soon. 😄🙏🙏
Love it. I've assembled a few knives, but nothing at this level - good work!

Excited for you! With such high-quality workmanship, I would not worry about failure!
Amazing quality! You will make Journeyman no sweat!
Beautiful! I love watching y'alls videos. Good luck!
Precision work. Wow!
This will get you journeyman easily. Beautiful and functional!
I really love the copperwork on the bolster on this one. I have some decent hunting knives but this one is just beautiful.
So beautiful!
That's so cool man! Well executed!
Your son is gona have some Hella competition!
Good luck with testing!
Beautiful work! You always make it look so easy. Sign of a true craftsman!
Amazing! Would be so cool to see the judges inspect it.
Wow! That came out freaking beautiful, sir! Thank you for sharing your video with us 😊
Nice work my friend... I'm sure the judges will be impressed!
What a beautiful sharp knife!😄🇵🇭❤❤❤❤❤
Beautiful...
Beautiful work.
Good luck and " May the Forge be with you"
Therapy with Kyle's dad :D
Nice work, Jeff! First one was a beauty and so is this one! It was a pleasure meeting you at the Blade Show this year. -Not Jake
That's a real stunner! Hope you sail through the tests.
Brilliant blade.
Nicely done good times 👍
Nicely done sir!
The wood blocks are a great idea! I've never thought of that before thank you!
Good luck with the testing, tho with that gorgeous hunter you don't need any luck.
Looks nice, I really liked the wood you used for the handle. Hope it pleases the judges and you get your Journeyman status.
Another amazing work 👏👏
Well done pops
Great looking knife!
Love that knife. Looks like it will function well and look good at the same time.
Outstanding piece of art! 💪
lovely...the tapered tang really does look great
Damn that's awesome work.
Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship, would love to purchase one of your knives.
Beautiful knife
Wow, beautiful knife, I especially like the rosewood handle, it makes it a quality piece. All the best with your Journey Man efforts etc, hope you achieve all you are aiming at. Regards from Down Under.
As a hobbyist bladesmith who’s done a fair share of full tang knives and really toiled over the fit up.. I can say this knife is very well done and they’d be crazy not to pass it for JS 👍🏻👍🏻
Great knife, I can't wait to see a journeymen knife special show. I'm sure that you'll nail it. 🗡
Gorgeous knife. I appreciate the craftsmanship of Damascus, but a well built high carbon knife is something special.
Hey Dad, I always enjoy your videos. You have such a laid back style and I always learn something from each eppisode. A big shout out to Josh the camera man, your skills are amazig brother. ok, all the best from Australia.
Bro what is going on that your family so good at they do, this much skill & attention to detail in one nuclear unit making seem like you all got some genetic cheat codes!
JourneyMan…. Wow.. you look like a SUPER MASTER TO ME…
I'm a simple man. I see a Jeff Royer video, I watch it
Ohhhh, its Dad. I saw the title and got all confused.
Muito bom !
I'm rooting for you! Will you be doing your test with Kyle, or another MS?
Dude, you need *your own* youtube channel.
That's a good looking knife. I was under the impression that they stress the test knives to the breaking point. Maybe that's the master test.
dad!
you are better than their rubric 🍻
Boa noite meu amigo obrigado
Grazie mate.
Dad
Looks like those gloves lost out to the sanding belt a few times 😬
How do the judges know that the applicant made their own knife? Do you have to video tape the process or do they just take you at your word?
👍👍👍
Give us a feedback from judges
Pure art!
what do you got to do to be come a journeymen.
Check out the American Bladesmith Society. They have it all written out. Cheers my friend.
Dad
You must have $1 million worth of equipment in your shop
I doubt they see workmanship of that caliber for the judging fit/finish for Master Smith.
Less than 200 people hold master smith title in the ABS, so no, they certainly do see thos level of fit and finish, and more.
They evaluate down to things like a single grit line out of place, and everything easier to spot than it.
His fit and finish is good, but not master good.
Great knife, great video. But pls the music is awful.
JR MS
Dad the
Love your channel. But the distraction is when people put music over the voice. It does not help to listen at all. I love asmr and natural sound. For music I go to special music channels. So I watch your channel without sound because of a good content.
Journeyman, not journeymen. You are one man not several. You are very talented but brush up on your English.
Are you French??
