Crying with laughter at this. Your reaction to me saying 'blathering' was brilliant! Cheers for watching, Coney mate. Glad you guys got a chuckle out of it. Had no idea more than 300 people were ever going to see this video lol. Really helpful seeing my video through the eyes of someone else, so thanks.
It was a very funny video
big fan bro keep it up
the over-the-top pissed off british dude persona (if that’s what it is) here goes crazy please keep it up
I don’t know how to explain it, but you’re right, there is absolutely a difference between a 9/10 with no cons and a 10/10 game.
I would honestly argue that there are even 10/10 games that have cons.
The difference is 10/10 implies it has no specific demographic and *everyone* can enjoy it. 9/10 with no cons acknowledges that it’s main “flaw” is that it isn’t universally appealing. It’s not listed as a flaw because it really isn’t, it’s just purposeful design. Hades fits here because not everyone like rougelikes.
And yeah 10/10 with flaws is also a thing, but more complicated.
@@emanonomoi I heavily disagree with the opinion that 10/10 media has to have mass appeal. If anything, I find that games that hone into a specific audience can achieve a more personal feel and leave a greater impact.
Everyone is into different things, and by your logic the only games that would qualify for 10/10 is stuff like Tetris or Mario Kart, since those are the only games that truly have "universal appeal".
Games like celeste or resident evil 4 would be disqualified because not everyone likes platformers or horror games.
@@emanonomoi Really depends on how scores are meant to be interpreted.
a) As a measure of how much the reviewer liked the game
b) As a measure of how much the reviewer thinks the audience will like the game
c) As a measure of some pre-defined qualities of the game
d) As a measure of comparison against other games inside (and sometimes outside) a genre
In all of those types of reviews con-less 9/10 and 10/10 mean different things.
a) Liked it a lot, but not quite enough
b) Thinks people will like it, but not enough
c) Great but not Excellent (or just a consequence of the algebra not working out)
d) Great but doesn't feel better than other 9/10's or close enough to other 10/10s
@@kyx5631 Oh there's absolutely 10/10 with flaws, even 10/10 with a hell of a lot of flaws (Looking at you, breath of the wild), but I didn't wanna open that basket of worms in this youtube comment.

“I hate politics in games that’s why I love bioshock” might be one of the funniest comments I’ve ever heard, it’s so good
I love how I've already seen 2 comments about OnlyOneHere. It's hilarious how he's become such a well known character in Coney's fanbase
I remember when I was reading Splatoon 3 reviews, and there was 1 insanely negative review. I clicked on the persons profile, and was pleasantly surprised to see it was OnlyOneHere.
I almost wonder if OnlyOneHere is satire but I'm just gonna keep telling myself it's not
@@taylortots5549 I am convinced it’s real because they also have a “parody” account called “onlyonemissing” where he gives games he gave 0s and sarcastically reviews them as 10s. It could be a copycat but the way the reviews read are so similar.
The twitch comment “gamers (as a slur)” at 0:46 had me dying 😂
The thing about too much water is that it's right. Everywhere that has water in the late game has the exact same encounters, as well as high encounter rates. It's frustrating and unrewarding
Repels exist for a reason
@@patrickburton1401 I think repels being required to get through (not enjoy, get through) 1/3 of the map can def be notee as a flaw
@@patrickburton1401It doesn't change the fect that for a good chunk of the game you have no new encounters
The main thing that I've heard is that they gave the original games a 9 out of 10 despite it having a worst problem with the water section of the game. This is the big issue with IGN, they get different people to review different games, and as such they're inconsistent inconsistent and unreliable. That's really the actual issue with IGN and not "they review the game that I like badly and it makes my gamer blood rage" like most people's issues with them.
The thing is, while thats true until some extent, ORAS introduced the flying on the top of latios which allows you to straight up ignore most of the water sections and instead give you new things to do, by the time you get to that, you are done with the water unless you are doing the regis initial puzzle on the rapids, and at the point you can do that, you also get the upgrade to national dex encounters and the dexnav upgrade, in the originals? yeah no, screw you gamer, eat up all the water routes every time, still, repels help a lot and they are less obnoxious to use later games
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more accurate depiction of Gamers than this video. It seriously needs to be studied by future generations.
You get a gamer influencer commentating the opinions of a gaming top 10 reviewer’s opinions of a game journalist. Discourse of all kinds in 20 minutes

There are so many people who don't understand the "Too much water" meme. It's funny out of context, but the actual review was just about there being too many water pokemon compared to all the other types.
I think the overwhelming amount of water types in those games kinda goes hand-in-hand w there being too many water routes, it’s kinda the same review. But if you’re right and it’s just about the Pokémon themselves i think that makes the review much much worse funnily enough, just don’t use them, buy repels.
It's crazy how they ordered the tier list on the number of dislikes instead of a ratio.
Gamers don’t do math
Thank you!!! Spot on
@@bibbyboxx2219 Have you seen Mobile game players they do a lot math same with MMO players
Sheer number draws you to what got a lot of negative attention. Ratio will bring you to some review with 25 likes and 100 dislikes. Doesn't really have the same oomph or lean well into the type of video he was trying to make.
He missed how the Unleashed reviewer was intentionally shit at the game 😭😭😭
Idk why IGN got shit on for the "too much water" ruby/sapphire thing. Even though those were my favorite pokemon games as a kid I remember even at 10 years old hating how many water sections there were where I was just stuck in random encounter hell.
9 year old me who didn't understand how Repels worked hated those water routes and the multitude of Tentacools and Wingulls that lived within.
I understand where she's coming from with the too much water statement, but at the same time, it fits the theme of the game too well for me to complain about it. Also repels are a thing, and eventually you get to fly around to whatever location you want.
Yea but how do you take out the water in a remake. They actually made it much more bearable then in the original
It’s called repels
the water is just uninteresting to look at. it's just a big flat open area without any identifiable terrain like the land has. it's just like 1/3 of the area of the map is just completely blank
I thought this was gonna be an Onlyonehere metacritic video.
Onlyonehere is the only critic I believe in
Man i remember feeling like I was crazy defending "Too much water" back in the day, it's a perfectly reasonable criticism of Hoenn as a region and that whole thing was peak gamers taking something out of context (ie just reading the blurb instead of the review) and running it into the dirt
Lol it’s a water region tho I mean
Not really cause it’s literally a tropical region though
@@z.t.9491 It being themed tropically doesn't fix the problems that that design decision creates
For like half the game, every wild Pokémon is water and every trainer used water Pokémon. It gets repetitive and tedious quickly and forces you to use certain pokemon or be at a disadvantage instead of properly diversifying your team (which is hard unless you like water pokemon). Not to mention travelling on wide open spaces of blue tiles isn't very interesting compared to the variation in designs you get in the rest of the game, AND of course every water tile can spawn a random encounter so you're just absolutely spamming repels the whole time. This wouldn't be too bad occasionally but the second half of the game is a constant barrage of water routes and running from wingulls.
Hoenn was my generation growing up, and I love it dearly, but there being too much water is completely true. The real issue is that if they wanted that much water they needed to give it significantly more variety to make it interesting.
The problem comes in that their original ruby and sapphire review that was not at all counted as a negative and the originals got a better score because of it
@@poliorice3600 Expectations change in 15 years lmao
Crazy that some people in chat couldn't understand between a great game held back by flaws and a good game with no issues being both being 9/10. It's like every game has some kind of checklist of requirements to meet to be 10/10
Yeah fr it’s not hard to comprehend. Games/movies/songs don’t reach a 10/10 because there are zero flaws. They reach that mark because you absolutely love them. Not having glaring flaws does not equate to loving a game to that extent. People with that viewpoint take out any subjectivity in a review and only look at the game on paper
On the "9/10 with no flaws" thing, I can agree with that. For me, a 10/10 piece of media (game, show, etc.) has to leave a lasting impression on me. There's a personal, subjective level to it. As an example, I played Axiom Verge and Hollow Knight at around the same time. Both are great Metroidvanias that accomplish exactly what they wanted to do, but only Hollow Knight left a major impression on me. I have no complaints about Axiom Verge, it's just that there's some intangible quality missing from it, or missing from me, that prevents it from having the same impact.
"What did she mean by this?" < "WOT ON URTH IS SHE BLATHERING ABOUT"
I don’t like IGN, but one thing I think is weird with people criticizing it, is that they think that everyone at IGN is a monolith or something, and they bring up multiple different bad reviews even tho they were reviewed by different people. We have to look at the reviewers individually, it’s like how people talk about rotten tomatoes as well, as if there’s like a council of people who collectively decide on a score
Thats true, holding the reviewer accountable when it really isn't their fault isn't something that people should be doing. My only issue with the people who review the games is that some of them are obviously not interested in the games they review or they start comparing it to completely different games and use said comparison as the benchmark. For example, they did this with SMT and Persona 5.
I dont really agree with this. Its a review meant to represent ign thats why its posted on their channel. They def need to have more then one person reviewing a game
It doesn’t matter they still gave bad reviews
IGN is a media company, a collective of people working toward the success and promotion of IGN. There's no standards they consistently practice, which has many believe that scores are propagated by paid promotion and bribery. They don't hire the right person for the job because it doesn't matter, they're getting paid for good reviews and not paid for games that receive low scores. If game reviews are motivated by paid promotion or identity politics, then the scores are predetermined and therefore deception.
I mean putting unsuitable reviewers on projects is a flaw with IGN
They don’t have a good enough understanding of there reviewers to assign them to appropriate projects and likely don’t have enough specialists for more niche genres tgat don’t appeal to the mainstream audience so you get shit like doom 2016 being reviewed like a battlefield game despite the game being designed like an old school PC boomer shooter with a focus on arcade style fun rather than more modern games preference for endjess multiplayer skinner boxes or console focused cover shooters
Playing Death Stranding feels like watching one of those weird art pieces directed and staring massively know Hollywood superstars where you know it’s “good” but you’d never actually watch it given the choice.
So happy this became a video, watching it live was hilarious
This is a really interesting issue because game journalism does often seem to come from a place that is out of touch, but gamers are largely unable to voice their dissatisfaction with reviews in a specific or productive way. I think a rotten tomatoes-like approach where games have a critical score and an audience score might help with these kinds of issues.
I think a part of that is that voicing dissatisfaction in a reasonable, productive way feels like its typically ignored. Big, loud and explosive gets people heard on the internet.
Also Metacritic has an audience score and its just as useless as the RT audience score for the most part lol
>a rotten tomatoes-like approach where games have a critical score and an audience score
That's just metacritic. Gamers still cry about it.
Metacritic exists but people still throw a fit there's no pleasing people they will hate you for not liking there game
The problem with pokemon sword and shield wasnt that it didnt have all the pokemon, its that they explained they wouldn't put them all in because it was going to take too much time/resources with making the new ones and updating old ones. So you'd expect the pokemon actually in the game to be like looking good right? NOPE, THEY REUSED 3D MODELS AND LIED ABOUT IT. So basically their explanation didn't make any sense, they were already porting stuff in, no reason to not do it for everyone or say its for the "meta" instead of outright lying. I would have been fine with saying they wanted to encourage a healthy competitive meta, which they did a good job with. But yeah, when people got the game and investigated the models and discovered the nodes (i think thats the term for the 3D points) were all the same as older 3D gens, I at least, was livid
vertices
They also wanted to flog DLC
A 9/10 game is like a very well-written school essay that follows the instructions to a tee. “Minimum of 5 pages”? It’s exactly 5 pages long. “Must have at least 3 sources”? It has exactly 3 sources. There’s nothing wrong with it, but it could’ve been so much more.
I remember in around 2008 my 4th grade teacher was explaining how language is constantly changing and he said that "gamer" is now a word.
I will never not be salty over the ign sonic unleashed review

Look, I do think that SMT is inferior to Persona, but I also think it's ridiculous for anybody to criticize SMTV for not being enough like Persona 5. First off, expecting anything to be as good as Persona 5 besides maybe another Persona game is setting yourself up for disappointment, but more importantly, the two franchises split off in the first place because they were going for different vibes and focuses.
Your last point is exactly why people hate the comparison between the two. In my experience, SMT is way more focused on the difficulty in battles and strategy in using demons while Persona is more story and character focused. Disliking SMT for having a lacking story is fine, but giving Persona a pass on it's difficulty is a double standard
That's the disappointing and annoying thing about anyone talking about Persona. It's gotten to the point where every RPG is being compared to Persona 5 which makes it impossible for any RPG game to stand out. Especially if it has any kind of school setting, they automatically expect it to have a dating Sim like Persona
Exactly, they are two very different franchises. SMT is way more focused on the battles and the strategy you use while Persona has the benefit of having an overarching story and activities and ways to level up rather than just the battles. The fact that a bunch of people and that IGN reporter compared the two is just obnoxiously ignorant.
There's other persona games and other main line smy games that are better than 5
Tried getting into p5 a few years after playing P4G and it being my fave single player game of all time. After 50 hours I couldn’t get into it - the UI is nice but really hurt and strained my eyes half an hour into a play sesh, the writing was not up to par with P4G and the characters were just real cringe. The dungeon design and music were pretty banger tho, maybe I’ll give P5R a try one of these days
I’ll stand by the fact that ORAS did in fact have “too much water”
I don’t know why they phrased it like that, but there are too many water routes and too many water Pokémon in the game

Alright, IGN giving Alien Isolation a 5.0 really hurts me. That game is absolutely amazing and a 5.0 is way too low
Gotta love it when Coney puts out a vid on my birthday. Thanks for the present bro!
10:16 That doesn't make Pokémon change. Kids will still buy it, and they likely won't notice why people hate some games or "features" included in them.
The competitive mad scientists will *always* buy the game. Likely even both versions to guarantee access to every Pokémon and ability to trade with themselves before end-game.
>The competitive mad scientists will always buy the game. Likely even both versions to guarantee access to every Pokémon and ability to trade with themselves before end-game.
This is just wrong lol competitive pokemon is divided between people who don't really bother with the games and play on simulators and the ones who play official nintendo tournaments in which case they do build teams in game but no one really cares about having mons or abilities for the single player mode lol
The "competitive" side of single player is in nuzlockes or mods that increase the difficulty of the game, as without self imposed challenges the games are very easy (kids need to be able to beat it)
oh my god what's the song at the start i love it
Gamer isn't a weird word. Video games are an extremely new hobby by humanity's standards and hobbies have enthusiast names, so people invented one for gaming naturally. That's how language works.
For example, book lovers/collectors are called bibliophiles.

I get annoyed when people talk about reviews like there is just some mathematical equation that just says how good a game is. People also care wayy too much on how good a game is
Also there are multiple people at ign, it is dumb to say "THEY GAVE THIS A HIGHER SCORE THAN THAT" when there are two reviews by two different people
I feel the same way about a site like Pitchfork for album reviews
It's just one guy reviewing it. It's not like it's imperative to the rest of the site or anything.

I unironically adore death stranding. There's something so soothing and melancholy about it's meandering pace, muted colors, soundtrack, and bright yellow traversal aids placed by others that make your trek a little easier. The problem is that I wouldn't really call it a game in a classical sense. If I was trying to sell it to someone, I would sell it as an experience. That being said, it's one I find myself returning to often when I feel worn down and need a moment of decisive quiet.

You know looking back at bo3 it really does feel like a good 8.7/10 just for the zombies alone. Aswell as having workshop
It's also just an awesome game. Yeah the campaign is bad. But we've accepted that out of call of duty. The too much water review is a meme but in my opinion, the most infamous pokemon IGN review is Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky.
The reviewer gave it a lower score (4.8 iirc) than darkness or time and only played up to apple woods (like 1/8 of the game)
Explorers of sky, one of the best pokemon games of all time, is a 4.8/10 according to IGN.
Loved the ssx remake but I was cracked at SSX might be the most cracked I've ever been in a game. Although I do get the haters the funkyness was gone but it was pretty intouch with the more current snowboard vibe of big mountain.

On the SMT 5 review... Even if we assume that the intro about being Persona's edgy little sibling is a joke, that was probably the dumbest joke to make in this context. Persona being wildly more popular than its parent series is a *huge* sore spot for SMT fans and choosing to lead off with that was poking the hornets' nest on purpose.
To be honest, I don't know how and why you would care about popularity for a single player game. Just take the game and enjoy it? Who cares that another series is more popular (even if it is related)?

SMTV was honestly the weakest in terms of story. Over explained (10+ minute text dumps) and rushed character arcs. SMTIV is still the best game in the franchise followed by devil survivor and P5R.
I've warmed up to it as it's gameplay was really good but it's story was just a really bad nothing-burger.
I prefer demons being tools you have to eventually fuse or they'll get weak and drag you down, but having a team of any demon at lv99 to kill Lucifer was really fun.

I mean that last sentence they said regarding fragility is amazingly true for last of us 2. You can hate the direction the writing too, but it was still amazingly written in that direction.
I mean if you hate the direction of the writing you’re not going to see it as amazingly written. Can’t really blame them for not being able to kill the person that was beloved to Last of Us fans lol.
@@turkeyman631 hard disagree. I acknowledge that halo 1-3 are amazing games though I personally don’t like them. Anyone who takes their head out of the own personal preference can give credit where it’s do. I think the game is fantastically written. It just isn’t the story people wanted written, which I get. Part of me agrees. But I have to appreciate that it’s that feeling that makes it an achievement. That’s the essence of the game. It ain’t fair, your preference isn’t the reality of the world. Game was split in half. Divisive in its essence, even the games theme it it’s divisiveness in characters reflected even the players, and that’s intentionally. If that makes sense, the reaction was desired by design and they succeeded. That being said I will always wish I could have a spin off where I can watch their relationship build, Joel and Ellie, like I thought I was getting but I def truly appreciated the darkness of what we got
Hard disagree, they could've taken the writing in so many different directions, but they chose one of the worst ways to handle the story imo. For reference, from how they handled the beginning of the game to Joel's death to playing with Abby, it all felt..... unenjoyable. The way that Joel dies does subvert expectations yeah, but not in a meaningful way. When Joel dies, it comes out of nowhere and takes you by surprise, and after, you're just sitting there grieving and trying to hold it together until you suddenly switch characters and are playing as the same person who killed Joel. That interaction alone is one of the main reasons why people hated Abby and said this game was bad. You don't have time to reconcile with his death, the death is only present for the shock factor, and once you get to play as Abby, your hate and anger are still present, and trying to enjoy the game afterward just becomes tedious and disingenuous.
Don't feel bad. The Last of Us: Part 2 wasn't as bold of a sequel as Chrono Cross anyway.
I still need a spectrobes remake, those games FUCK! Disney sucks for keeping that banger franchise under lock and key!

Too much water???
Banjo and Kazooie Nuts & Bolts is actually a very good game, but it shouldn't have used the Banjo & Kazooie title.
Xenoblade fans have had bad reviews going back to saga, but I believe IGN has a pretty bad one of the original Xenoblade where several important characters' names are wrong (like dunban became Duncan), major spoilers are shown, and the person talking is grating to listen to.
Not only are there 9/10s with no flaws, I would also argue that there are 10/10s with flaws.
Skyrim is my favorite game ever and is easily a 10/10 in my book, but I could go on and on about everything wrong with it.
It absolutely has flaws, but I still had an amazing time with it. How much you enjoy something should not be boiled down to pros vs cons, it should just be how much you enjoy it. If any flaw keeps a game from being a 10/10, then there would be 9/10 games i like more than 10/10 games.
Not every Pokémon is in the game because they wanted the Pokémon habitats to be accurate to similar animals that would live there irl
I really enjoyed Death Stranding
