Dell XPS 13 vs HP Spectre X360 - Ultrabook Laptop BATTLE!

  • Dell's XPS 13 and the new HP Spectre X360 are two of the thinnest, most compact laptops on the market. But the Spectre X360 has a unique trick up its sleeve: it can also be used as a tablet. But is that feature useful or is a thin and light notebook like Dell's XPS 13 a better option?

I personally absolutely NEED a 2-in-1 device because as a student, I want to take hand-written notes / draw sketches and diagrams.
Wish more manufacturers did that, especially given a 360 degree hinge doesn’t really compromise the rest of the (laptop) user experience.

The new model Dell has a better, twin fan cooling design as opposed to the older models single fan cooling solution. PCWorld found that the new model i5 actually performs better than old model i7, simply because it can keep clock speeds consistently higher due to the better cooling

I remember buying my first laptop back in 2011. The HP ProBook 4530s, this is one of the first laptops I have ever seen which was equipped with a fingerprint scanner. After using this feature for so long on multiple HP laptops I must say I am very excited to see it integrated in many more laptops by a lot of different manufacturers these days.

I've had my spectre i7 for about a year now and most of my office has switched over to them as well. It's top notch build quality and the inclusion of windows hello and dual Thunderbolt makes a huge difference. It's compatible with the HP Elite dock which allows me to plug in a single TB3 cable and power both monitors, ethernet, and usb ports and then also charges the laptop. Honestly one of the best laptops i've used in forever.

I just got the Spectre and the 2-in-1 is really helpful because it saves space, like i cant put anything on the keyboard because it will react to touches, and sometimes i dislike having to reach over the keyboard to get to my screen. it's also really nice for watching videos. i dont know, i really enjoy it as a student and it's very comfortable in my opinion.

I really need it to be able to play back 4k 60Hz videos with skipping smoothly and to be able to edit GoPro Hero 6 4k videos on the fly (literally airports :))
Would that be a good idea to get a x360? ... Really like the specs on it.

Of these two exact models and configs/specs, definitely the HP, overall, wins imo.

Great review - very thorough - thanks. I am currently trying to decide between these two models (although I am looking at i7/16GB for both). I have played with the XPS but can't find the Spectre in a nearby store in the UK. It looks as though the latter is made of more premium-feel materials.
I am a graphic designer, so maybe the Spectre is better for me with regards being able to do little sketches on the fly, instead of taking my Wacom with me.

Literally just bought the 15 inch version of the hp laptop the day before you posted this video. It is pretty different from the 13 inch model but I'm loving it so far. Went for this as a 2 in 1 because of the ability to use a stylus for drawing and writing. One major problem I've found is how painfully slow the ssd is. I was very surprised at just how bad it can be. Maybe mine is an outlier but I wouldn't be surprised considering the performance

Good video review thanks. I think you are missing the point about the 360 hinge. The issue is not the hinge but the touchscreen. If you are using a touchscreen (for drawing, handwriting, using apps, etc...), the 360 hinge is a must to avoid the wobble. If you don’t use a touchscreen, it is useless. Nothing to do with watching videos in tent mode.

A few Infos on the HP: you Can install Windows precision Drivers for the touchpad. This brings the Quality of the touchpad to another Level and if you like larger trackpads it is easily the best Option on Windows. Only Problem with the trackpad is, that it is only Held by 2 screws on the top, wich makes it feel a Little loose if you just tap on it. The 360 Mode is probably just good for using the Stylus, but if you are a Student at a University, where they provide PDFs for their lecures it is a gamechanger compared to a regular Ultrabook, just like with a Surface. When it Comes to Sound, it has a built in EQ, which lets you finetune the Speakers to give out even better Sound. When i Comes to the Keyboard the lighting is a bit problematic on the Silver Model. You only have on and off White Backlight. In certain lighting there is no contrast between the White light and the silver key caps, which makes it hard to read. The Black Option is definetely better here. Last but not least: I would get a classic Ifixit toolkit with the 360. HP somehow has a designflaw with the backpanel, where over time the screws loosen just a tiny bit. This may lead to weird squaking noises when operating the device. It Can easily be fixed just by tightening the screws on the back again. Not excellent, but it works and you don't have to cope with HPs horrible Service. (at least in the EU)

A crazy idea: Use a microSD in an adapter for your camera. HP's oversight isn't a crushing defeat on that front then. (Granted MicroSDs have a bit of a speed reduction but UHS-3 cards exist and you can shoot 4K/60 with those.)

2 in 1s are AMAZING for students. Using one note we can write on PDFs and other documents. We can pretty much not bring any excess papers cause we don't need it. It is also a god send for artists. Photoshop with a stylus on an on screen artwork it helps so much. I wouldn't get a convertible if I wasn't a student that needs to create notes everyday for 4+ years.

I have the 15” i7 8550 rose gold spectre. It’s great at editing 1080p with color grading and handles 4K okay with lag in playback but it makes due for on the road jobs with its slim feature. The only downside that makes it so beautiful is it’s build. It’s all metal and with such close together parts it heats up real quick and I have a laptop cooler underneath but of course that does almost nothin so the only real downside to the spectre is heat. Amazing computer though!

I have a HP x360 13. Well, it's a limited edition Hewlett Packard branded one with a superb 1440p OLED screen so the screen is far far superior to the ones on the current models. Another thing that is a bit annoying about the current models is the thinner side bezels. The older models like mine have wider bezels which is far more practical when used as a tablet. I use it in tablet mode quite a lot as I like to read, make sketches, take notes or watch videos on flights doing business travels. I'd highly recommend the HP x360, and although the current models aren't quite as good as the older Skylake models (I have compared them) they're still among the very best business traveller and professional user laptops on the market with the huge bonus of being a convertible so you don't have to carry around a tablet as well. For a gamer or student where premium feel and looks might not be a relevant parameter there are cheaper alternatives that fits the bill better. Cheers.
EDIT: forgot to mention. The older Skylake models does not have USB C (which is useless to me anyway) But has 3x USB 3.0 type A, full insertion full size SD card reader (a must for me), and both mini display port and HDMI outputs which pretty much covers all connectivity uses when doing conference calls or making presentations to a larger audience. The speakers is far worse on the older models though but I design headphones for a living so I have that part covered pretty well and never use the internal speakers.

The intro is lit, but that ad. Cooler Master should hire Dimitri to make ads for cases he have positive reviews on and put them on CZcams. That poor glass though, I hope you didn't have water on your electronics, they seems to be everywhere in your place.
Is it me or is the intro kinda longer than usual? Almost 2 minutes. This is a more complicated comparison than just 2 clampshell or 2 flipbooks though.
That fingerprint sensor is there for use in tablet mode, though in tent mode it kinda still sucks. Could use a mention.
Well I've seen poeple using flipbooks in tablet mode in railways or buses, and Dave just showcased a use case of tent mode gaming with external keyboard and mouse. For gaming a proper mech keyboard definitely makes a difference. Esspacially wireless keyboards, like the K63. Love that thing, both as a on-the-go board or secondary board.
By not bright enough, do you mean the keyboard is actually not visible in a not totally dark, like a single lamp over the room type of dark scenerios? It is hard to imagine a keybaord to be not bright enough. Though I don't have them on anyway.
Well it sucks that ultrabooks are having less and less ports on them, but wireless is kinda getting there. Wireless mouses and keyboards with both dongle and bluetooth is getting both better and more affordable. Audio is tricky though.
I really like flipbooks, and I've been holding on for a flipbook like the Acer Nitro Spin 5. It is really hard for me to type on a rubberdome keyboard like stock Dell or Lenovo ones, so I carry my K63 around, and a mouse. It works wonders with these flipbooks.

Finally someone points out one of the major problems with HP laptops: their keyboard. It feels sturdy but I hate it. Especially the arrow keys. They have the same arrow keys for gaming laptops as well. Thank you for pointing it out. They need a keyboard like Lenovo Y700.

Hey mate. Plenty of people use micro SD card reader to extend storage as well as quickly get their phone pics on the computer. Non photograph prefer a micro SD for sure.

You should have mentioned if either laptop was throttling under load. The Spectre may have ran lower because it throttled.

The 2in1 convertibles are good for work, not so much for the home user IMO... Imagine that you''re working and need to present something to a costumer (in real estate or high business areas), rather than having a tablet + a pc and needing to copy files between them, just have it on tablet while presenting and use it on laptop mode while creating the documents
