  • Third starter in two years, this time because the Frankenstein WAI with the loose-fitting Prestolite armature was dodgy from the outset and I just forgot about it. WAI is a Chinese copy of the Prestolite, retailing for about a third of the price, and this is a brand new one. I am confident that the issue which wrecked the first two has been resolved, and the FrankenWAI was always a disaster waiting to happen, so all shall now be well. 3:53 I've since found that holding the joins together with insulation tape makes the unit less likely to separate when inserting it into the engine; also, use grease to stick the gasket to the starter.

Thank you for this! I just got my first bike 1980 XLS 1000, it was really fun for a bit, but it’s not fully starting right now. It’s turning over but not starting. Spark plugs are absolutely fouled, incredibly dirty. A little black smoke was coming out the exhaust when it was running. Now the starter is smoking when I try to start it. Again thank you for this, it was really helpful!

A smoking starter is definitely a bad sign :-) Ironheads do go through spark plugs (1000 miles is a good time to replace them), but if both are getting fouled badly it may be that the carburetor or ignition timing adjustment is a bit off. If it's one plug only you may have a worn valve guide. My starting issues continued after this, so I ended up putting a kickstart on.

@@ImminghamIronhead there are times where I’m thinking I’ve bitten off more than I can chew with this being my first bike. But people like you are definitely helping me out tremendously! That will be the next thing I address once the starter comes in the mail! Thank you for your time! It is greatly appreciated!

@@justinvaldez2050 It can be overwhelming at first; a five year old bike can have one or two problems, but a forty year old bike is basically made of problems. I'd have been lost without CZcams.

Agree. I converted my XLH to kick only a couple years ago, and never looked back.
