'Competition' is a much bandied-about adjective, but in the case of Springzilla it is totally justified. The big red clutch spring works a treat, but wears friction plates at an alarming rate. There is an aftermarket assembly for the big twins of the period, which kind of share a transmission with Sportsters, so I'm looking into that now.

    • @ImminghamIronhead
      @ImminghamIronhead Před 4 dny

      Yep, the points, backplate, advance/retard all come out. On removing the cover the cams will get disturbed and may need lining up to their timing marks again, which is how we learn 🙂 PS: Cam shims only exist to make cams quieter; they are fiddly and you can absolutely do without them.

    Now there is a company that makes a clutch pack kit. That actually adds an additional clutch plate. Now I don't know if that's across the board on sporties and big twins but I know they had it on the big twins. Now with the big twin on my shovel head I've got 10 springs somebody had 10 red springs in there when I bought the bike you could barely pull the collection but there was no slip. Couple of things I'd like to say about this procedure as shown here for everyone ! I have just done this today as I installed a piston on my Panhead that proved to the wrong size and had to remove said spiral clips ! Firstly what's not shown is the first proceder as of how to locate the outer end of the spring which is extremely hard to locate without a good led headlamp and not a torch between your teeth unless you would like to go visit the Dentist ! I also used a pair of cheap Magnified glasses from the chemist or any cheap shop so to make it easier to locate and see the end of the outer spring and the rest of the procedure , I also used tiny little pic gougers bought cheaply to attempt to remove the end of the spring out ! The procedure of locating the spring end and gouging it out can be very frustrating so patients is required for this to happen ! But once the end is picked out it's quiet easy to pull out !

    The usual support bracket for the carb goes from the bottom bolt of the manifold as you pointed out, then down the the bolt holding the tappet guide (front cylinder, second tappet. You just need to bend the bracket a bit to reach the tappet bolt. Or, buy an aftermarket one.

    I did a lot of iron head sportsters years ago. If you are on a budget and not reboring use plain cast rings instead of any kind of moly ones. They are more forgiving to less than perfect cylinder bores. May not last as long but I believe do a better job.

    • @ImminghamIronhead
      @ImminghamIronhead Před 3 měsíci

      Never tried one, but the top end is fed solely by those 3/16" brass tubes running parallel to the pushrods, so probably not much to report. The standard oil pressure switch coming off the oil pump to the red warning light seems broadly accurate, but they do break down over a couple of years or so with all the oil and vibration, so keep a spare handy.

    • @kelvinbolton9395

      Hi.....as an ironhead rider for over 40 years I can say that they do work. However on start up you may get a reading of about 20 or so psi when cold, once warm then it drops significantly to almost nothing psi n you wonder if you've got a pump problem. Ironheads in my understanding move the oil around by volume and not pressure. Rely on the oil light, just keep an eye on the connection n if in doubt look into the oil tank to check return flow, give it some revs n you will see it pumping into the tank.😊

Five years later it's much better, but it's very old so you get things fail that you just don't expect. Replacement parts are cheap and plentiful, but can be pretty badly made. In 79/80 AMF/Harley was phasing out the kick to push button start and only having kick as an accessory if ordered by the customer. The thinking of that was to broaden the customer base by adding some luxury and easy engine start for the folks who wanted to start riding but well.... didn't have the mechanical ability or strength to kick a higher compression bike and to compete with Honda's nice guy image by making the bikes more user friendly, appealing, and easier to get out and ride for the general public and more money for leisure type folks here in the states across the pond.😎🏴‍☠️

Looking to upgrade my dying Keihin butterfly carb on my 82 ironhead and I might go the eye wateringly expensive S&S route, but am having trouble verifying (even from the suppliers Hogparts) as to whether I need a new matching manifold or not - I have doubts as to whether the throat sizes are compatible 🤔

    The breather to the oil tank is closed loop - not being able to blow thru it is correct - I would simply run the breather from the reed valve outlet to atmosphere somewhere rather than trying to splice it in with the line for the oil tank. If you think about it when the oil pump takes oil from the oil tank the air volume increases which allows pressure from the crankcase to be drawn into the oil tank - as I say closed loop- its continuous when the engine is running.

    • @ImminghamIronhead
      @ImminghamIronhead Před 4 měsíci

      Makes sense. I have the front one exiting into the air filter cover as before, and the rear one goes where it should now, with the addition of a further breather to atmosphere. May as well 🙂
