    I love this video for the sheer enjoyment of discovery that it captures.
    There was no _logical_ reason to take this trip for this short video, but I thought that the moment that Baltimore was sighted and the journey itself is representative of much of what science is all about: observation, patience, trial and error, data tracking, persistence, and the joy one feels at the end of such an endeavor.
    I will show this to my 5 year old and I'm sure she will take delight in this journey!
    *KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!*

    When I was a teenager in the 1980's, My family saw a large white owl standing in middle of the road late at night between the North East side of Lake Okeechobee, and Indian Town.
    It flew straight at our Ford Econoline van. Its wingspan was far larger than our windshield. I never saw it again, but never will forget that beautiful bird.

    Very awesome video of one of my favorite birds! I first saw a male Snowy Owl at Sachuest Point Nat. Wildlife Preserve in Middletown, RI, in the winter of 2018/2019. I spotted and photographed a female on the eastern shore of Fairhaven, MA earlier this year and another female back at Sachuest Point earlier this month. What a blessing!

    Great video. It should be circulated to all bird lovers. In our Coastal Maine area we had a Memorial Service several days ago and Mary Oliver's "Owl..." poem was read. Just before the poem was read, a dream vision about two snowy owls beating against her window, had been recited. This intensely mystical Dream Vision had been written down in a journal just weeks before the deceased had passed away.

      Graceful, incredibly stealthy,perfect predatory skills and super sensing capabilities are what makes them a great hunter, there is so much to learn from them in real world. It is like one attacks you so silently and accurately that you don't even know what attacked you! It is not in race of speed but it is full of unique capabilities. I too admire them as symbol of wisdom and mysterious.
      Me want a barn owls in future.

    Just curious: I wonder if the tracker on his back affects his habits/behaviors at all. It doesn't appear to be cumbersome but I wonder if it makes him easier to be spotted by predators or an oddity to potential mates and other snowy owls. Any further info on that? Thanks! :)

    • @charliesmith7833
      @charliesmith7833 Před 5 lety +9

      Generally when scientists do mark release recapture studies they do as much as possible to ensure the marking doesn't hinder the animal because obviously the data wouldn't be representative of the population if that was the case. Owls generally aren't preyed upon as adults so in this case I'd have thought that wasn't much of a concern. Its possible that the tracker could make him less aerodynamic, causing him to produce sound as he flies. That would definitely be disruptive for an owl but again I'd have thought the researchers would have tried to avoid that :)

    My granddaughter's pre-K class has a stuffed snowy owl toy they named Snowy Joan. Each weekend one child gets to take it home, along with toy lemmings to "feed" it. The kid's parents put pictures in a log book along with stories of what the child did with Snowy Joan (ride bikes, take naps, go on picnics, etc.) A great fun for them. I showed them this video and they were transfixed on it. An excellent piece of work and now hooked on Skunk Bear.

Anyway, I was stunned to learn that Baltimore the owl actually visited One Penn Plaza in NYC! For those not familiar, that address is the location of Penn Station (busiest intercity railroad station serving millions per week) and Madison Square Garden! Amazing to think snowy owls visit the big city! I wonder what other amazing creatures are out there peering down while I'm walking the streets of Manhattan. Wonder if he caught a show and a NYC rat for quick bite. lol. :)

Back and forth at my dogs and flew down to catch something. It was sunset so I didnt see him again. He was bright white with black specks or rain drop shapes all over.
