    My parents grew up in Mexico City and Roma was incredibly nostalgic for them. Their lives were very similar to the children and have memories of their nannies, maids and chauffeurs. I’ve been to their childhood homes many times and they are mostly the same as they were all that time ago and the same class dynamics. I appreciate Roma for giving me a look at the world my parents lived in.

    The first time I watch this film it didnt feel like I was watching a movie, but more like i time travel back to Mexico in 1970. It feel like living day to day life with the characters and made it feel more attached to them. There's no huge character dramatic arcs but its the simplicity of the characters that made it feel relateable and follow the characters on their journey through the unpredictability of life. This movie and Boyhood are so similar in thematics but Roma is more authentic and haunting in its presentation

    It was a beautiful movie... filmed beautifully and only a small script its a visual movie that speaks for itself, it doesn't need a lengthy script... if you dont like subtitles its a plus as you get to read and still look at the beauty of the film. A film that shows people treating people well, with love and care no matter their station/role in life... they truly love Cleo and the other household help and vice versa. The young lad was talking to Cleo about past lives on several occasions and always interrupted - he had been a pilot and a sailor and he says when he was old Cleo was with him in that life and I wish they explored that more.....

    I really enjoy this channel and respect your approach, it helped me realize why I don't like this movie, I guess that I enjoy my slow, long, with nothing mayor going on-esque films when the characters are the central point in a human and emotional way; "Roma" been in conjunction with this "bigger picture of the world" (or something like that) just doesn't appeal to me, how can I care of the world if nobody matters as individuals?, I watched it last year and maybe I could appreciated more now, who Knows?
    Also I want to clarify that this is only how I feel about the film right now, and IDK if it could be possible for you because of the language barrier, but I’d appreciated if you tried to watch anyone of these:
    -Anna (2015) by Jacques Toulemonde Vidal.
    -Los viajes del viento “The Wind Journeys” (2009) by Ciro Guerra.
    -Niña errante “Wandering Girl” (2018) by Rubén Mendoza.
    I'm not asking for anything, just saying "Hey!, maybe you'd like other latinoamerican movies from Colombia"

    To me the film was thank you to the nanny(s) of his childhood. Cleo is a quiet rudder, somewhat selfless and giving. Her own problems take a backseat to those of the mother and the children -- that is a dynamic that children don't see but as an adult looking back perhaps there is a sense of guilt at having not appreciated her. The style of the film is highly observational and meditational. It is filled with longing and the bittersweet perspectives on how the innocence and naiveity of childhood colors our memories of those years but revisiting them in an honest and mature way challenges how we think about ourselves and others.

    Haven't seen the film, but maybe water (essential to everyone) runs as a common thread because access to water is such a distinct determining factor of class. For people who are consider themselves or are considered poor or lower class may be relegated to places where you have to go get water. And that water may not be initially safe to drink.
    For recreational use, upper class has pools while the lower class has to rely on going to the beach. And even with beach access, there can be separation with upper class being on boats while lower class has to stay near the shore.
    And another part is that life can still be fruitful regardless as long what's essential is available.

    • @andrew5500
      @andrew5500 Před rokem

      Absolutely, there’s definitely a moment in the film, I think when she goes to the lower class neighborhood, where the political speakers in the background are rallying people specifically over their limited access to water.
      The violence of the massacre that results from the related political tension ends up indirectly leading to her water breaking, and the stillbirth… She’s able to save the more wealthy children she serves from the dangers of water, but her own child dies in the water of her own womb.

    I have a problem with Roma, which is how universally its photography is praised, while I find it very gray compared to the dédiant days of black and white.
    This being said, you included my favourite moment around 00:40 so as usual, bravo.
